Iran kabaddi teams beat India, S Korea to clinch 2018 Asian Games golds

Iranians have won gold medals in both men's and women's kabaddi championships at the Jakarta Palembang 2018 Asian Games in Indonesia.

After winning over defending champion India, the Iranian men's team secured a strong 26-16 victory over South Korea in the final on Friday, becoming the Asian kabaddi champions.

The Iranian men's team ranked second after champion India in the past two Asian Games and past three World Cup tournaments.

The Indian men’s team has been kabaddi champion for seven times in the games.

Iranians put away the Indian team in the semi-finals, ending that team’s dominant run at the event.

The Iranian women's kabaddi team also stopped their Indian arch-rivals from winning their third successive gold. The Iranians edged past India 27-24 to avenge their 2014 Asian final defeat against the Indian side. Their victory marks the first time a women's team has beaten India in kabaddi at the Asian Games.

Iran at 2018 Asian Games: Day 11 Highlights

Team Iran snatched its 18th gold medal in the 2018 Asian Games through Kurash in the -81kg category where Elias Ali-Akbari out-powered all his rivals to top the podium.

Ali-Akbari easily downed his first three opponents to reach the semis to set a meeting with Uzbekistan’s Shah Moradof. He struggled past the semis in a breathtaking match and finally beat Tajikistan in the final to win Iran’s 18th gold medal.

Omid Tiztak also won a bronze in the same weight category. Iran’s Kurash team have also pocketed a silver through Jafar Pahlevaani in the +90kg category and another bronze by Ghanbarali Ghanbari in the -66kg category.

Meanwhile, Iran’s 19th gold came in discus throw as Ehsan Hadadi topped the podium and earned the record of 4 consecutive gold medals at the Asian Games.

Iran’s silver medalist at the 2012 London Olympics grabbed the gold with a 65.71 meters throw as Iraq’s Mustafa al-Saamah claimed the silver with 60.09 meters and the bronze went to Eissa Zankawi from Kuwait. Iran’s Behnam Shiri had a 58.09 throw to end up behind the Kuwaiti and finish as the 4th.

With that, Iran’s medal tally rises to 52, including 19 gold, 16 silver and 17 bronze medals to maintain the 5th position. China remains at the top with 102 golds, Japan stands in 2nd with 52, South Korea is next with 37, and the host, Indonesia, is 4th with 30 gold medals.
