Americans’ concerns over the new coronavirus have spawned a public-health emergency declaration, a controversial travel ban and quarantine, and China-bound flight suspensions. But the better-known flu virus is a far greater threat to Americans’ health right now, data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention suggest.

The deadly new coronavirus, first detected late last year in Wuhan, China, had killed at least 563 people and infected at least 28,018 people in China as of Thursday, according to the country’s National Health Commission. There were 191 cases in 24 countries outside of China as of Wednesday, the World Health Organization said, including one death.

Americans have simply gotten used to influenza despite the staggering number of people it affects.

The U.S., meanwhile, has 11 confirmed coronavirus cases and no deaths. Some 293 people had been placed under investigation for the virus as of Wednesday, with 206 testing negative and 76 more pending. The CDC has called this coronavirus “a very serious public health threat,” but adds that its immediate health risk to the American public is low. Health officials remain uncertain of exactly how the coronavirus spreads.

In contrast, at least 19 million people in the U.S. have experienced flu illnesses this season, the CDC estimates. About 180,000 people have been hospitalized so far, and an estimated 10,000 have died. Sixty-eight children have died this flu season.

Americans have simply gotten used to influenza despite the staggering number of people it affects, said Scott Weisenberg, a clinical associate professor of medicine and director of NYU Langone Health’s travel medicine program.

“With influenza, it’s fairly predictable: We see a fairly consistent number of individuals, sometimes higher, sometimes lower,” he told MarketWatch. Coronavirus, on the other hand, “went from having zero cases” to a large number of cases in China and an emerging number of cases worldwide, he said. “We don’t know where it’s going to end up.”

Influenza “remains a dangerous virus every single year,” Weisenberg added. Groups at high risk for flu-related complications include adults aged 65 and over; pregnant women; young kids and children with neurological conditions; people living with conditions like diabetes, asthma, cancer, HIV/AIDS, and heart disease; and people who have had a stroke.

19 million people in the U.S. have experienced flu illnesses this season, and an estimated 10,000 have died.
Children’s and young adults’ hospitalization rates are currently higher than those observed at this time in recent flu seasons, the CDC says, despite overall flu hospitalization rates staying around the same level. More than half of specimens that tested positive for influenza this season have been in people younger than 25.

Influenza B, which impacts young people more severely, has been reported more often this season on a national level, according to the CDC’s most recent flu-surveillance report. But influenza A’s H1N1 subtype has been more commonly reported in recent weeks.

For everyone six months and older, the CDC says getting the yearly flu vaccine is “the single best way” to ward off the seasonal flu virus. People should also steer clear of close contact with sick people; stay home from work and school when they’re sick; cover their mouth and nose while sneezing or coughing; and clean their hands with soap and water or an alcohol-based sanitizer, the CDC says.

“I would worry much more about influenza this week,” Weisenberg said. “And people should get a flu shot — the flu is still active.”

Just 45% of U.S. adults last flu season received a flu vaccine, according to Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar. Almost 63% of kids got a vaccine.

While the CDC says estimates of this season’s flu-vaccine effectiveness aren’t yet available, it notes that research shows the flu vaccine typically reduces risk of flu illness by 40% to 60% when the vaccine viruses are similar to the ones currently circulating.

The risk of an average American being exposed to coronavirus would be quite low right now, but that could change in coming weeks and months depending on how the virus spreads, Weisenberg said.

While the CDC regularly publishes information on flu illnesses, hospitalizations and deaths that can be analyzed and compared year to year, health experts know far less about the new coronavirus, he added — including the number of people with milder virus symptoms who could still transmit it to other people.

In a report published Wednesday, the CDC noted that the coronavirus’s symptoms (which include cough and fever) were similar to flu symptoms, and that the coronavirus outbreak coincided with a season that brings a heightened prevalence of respiratory illnesses.

“Reducing the number of persons in the United States with seasonal influenza will reduce possible confusion with 2019-nCoV infection and possible additional risk to patients with seasonal influenza,” the agency said.

What can you do about the flu? On the other hand coronavirus doesn't start if there is no shady wildlife trade.

I agree that wildlife trade should be totally banned, that being said, swine flu is from pigs and bird flu is from birds (chicken), it's almost impossible to totally stop virus jumping from animals to humans, we are sharing the same planet.

and I agree with you, in fact your statement is more accurate. But this article is trying to turn these epidemics into a game of numbers. It is not possible to stop viruses jumping from animals to humans not is it possible to have everyone get the flu vaccine.

This large ongoing quarantine and prevetion measures in China can greatly reduce the chance of getting infected by the flu as well as coronavirus, which can result in massive drop of seasonal flu infection and deaths.

Sure..if you quarantine your entire population 365 days a year.

Yes this is all true but USA has every right to exercise isolation and stop flights. New coronavirus will add to their flu problems. Let's try to also understand why some people are reasonably worried for their own safety. We take care of ourselves and think about other people. Of course there will always be the crazy ones who will want to use anything negative about China while pretending nothing negative ever happens outside China. Just best to ignore those kinds. For normal and reasonable people, they are mostly being cautious for now and many are on China's side and support our struggle against the flu.

Again, why people uses flu season to try and compare that to the nCoV. Flu season consisted of many flu virus and also it is a global pandemic since 1918. Again, previously I have quote an article from Global times and mentioned the death rate in China from flu season is around 80,000-90,000 each year.

The problem is that Flu season is a event of hundreds if not thousands of flu virus. And we are talking about a single strand of virus that nobody knows in China, those are different.....

I said to reduce the number of infected and deaths, not totally wiping it out to zero. the current measures will certainly help to contain both novel virus and the flu.

I don't see how quarantine have done magic for the corona virus let alone the flu season, I mean, since the 10 days I left for Hong Kong, the virus have jump several flow and yes, the % is down, but then that's because the infected portion of people are larger, if you look at the actual people get infected, it jump at quite steady around 3000 case per day. There is a trend there.

Also, quarantine only works if the outbreak is small enough to contain, and people are now saying the quarantine does not even work for Corona Virus, how do you suppose it work on normal regular flu season, which is on a large scale.?

Sure..if you quarantine your entire population 365 days a year.

He is effectively saying, you will be able to control the virus if you do not get sick......

Well if between 84,000 and 92,000 Chinese die of Influenza every I don't see why they are suddenly making a fuss about US deaths and not their own. Seems they have just as big a problem.

Many medical professionals say this flu seaon is much worse than other year in US and indeed pose great threat both home and abroad, it's not making fuss about it, dieases don't know borders, people talk about ongoing diseases that kill, be them an increasingly deadly flu or coronavirues.

We have a 44% vaccination rate for the flu while you have only 2%. I think you guys are the ones in peril. Not surprised you have close to 100,000 deaths every year.

As I said virus have no borders, your claim that Chinese die more than US from diseases is meaningless like saying one person died in my family and two died in your family so it makes me happy, coronavirus and the flu strain devastating US this year are both worth special attention cause they can travel everywhere.

Well because so many Chinese travel everywhere and you have 90,000 deaths just from the flu maybe you shouldn't be wondering why you are getting special attention over the Coronavirus.
