Nor is African, but the term is used. We know Pakistani is not an ethnicity, likewise nor is 'American'. People often will use another identifying term for a person.

Short story. Police officers used excessive force on a black man named Rodney King in 1992, it was videotaped and broadcasted police officers were arrested but were acquitted by a jury and then the rioting started in Los Angeles. Looting and rioting in LA shops police was inadequate to handle these riots and people had to fend for themselves. So, when the rioting reached Korea Town, a group of Koreans armed themselves with automatic rifles, handguns, shotguns, took to the rooftops of their shops, and started firing at the rioters who came to loot their place.
Hence the name rooftop Koreans.
