Army will equip new Mountain Strike Corp with Brahmos, Agni, M-777 and Apaches to challenge China

The Indian Army has begun recruiting men for the second infantry division of the first strike corps specifically trained and equipped to do battle against units of the People's Liberation Army Ground Force (PLAGF) operating along the Line of Actual Control (LAC).

Despite a funding shortfall, the army is determined to raise the new 72nd Infantry Division that will be deployed to the northern border with China. Division headquarters will be at Pathankot in Punjab State.

The division will become fully operational in three years and will have three brigades when fully formed.

It will become part of the new 17 Mountain Strike Corps formed in January 2014. The corps provides quick-reaction ground offensive capabilities against the PLAGF and is the first strike corps organized specifically to combat the Chinese.

The other three strike corps are trained and equipped to do combat against Pakistan.

The 17th Mountain Strike Corps will fight in high-altitude combat. When fully organized, the corps will have over 90,000 men and will be equipped with tanks, artillery, helicopters, air defense and engineering units geared to fight in high altitude conditions.

The corps has been designed mainly for offensive operations against the Chinese. It will operate the latest version of the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile and Agni Nuclear callable Ballistic Missiles.

The corps will also receive new U.S.-made M-777 ultra-light howitzers and additional Apache Helicopters recently ordered from the United States.

The reason for the formidable firepower being bestowed on the corps is to achieve "credible deterrence" against the PLAGF.

"All adversaries respect strength, which comes from having the capability to strike across the border," said Gen. Bipin Rawat, Chief of Army Staff of the Indian Army.

The other unit in 17 Corps is 59 Infantry Division stationed in West Bengal, which is fully operational.

17 Corps will hold its first military exercise at Ladakh from August to September.

Army already has bloated numbers. Instead of recruiting new numbers, they should re-organise some units and give them the best equipments. I dont see why they want to add new numbers to 1.13 million. We have half a million Territorial Army, 2 million CRPF (with atleast 35% of them being ex-army) and a host of other paramilitary groups.

This is disappointing.

i heard that the indians were gonna equip these mountain corps with the new T-90MS correct me if i am wrong but isnt that a bit inefficient as those tanks would be not much of use in those terrain as the indian side is more rugged while it is much plainer on the Chinese side it would be better of to equip them with lighter tanks..

These bought toys will be blasted to smithering within 5 minutes after war break out. Then you can go back home and making roti prata. The war enduring ability of India is very limited, cause they can't produce anything serious on its own.

Indians are happy when they surrender cause they know it's time go home making roti Prata/Roti Tissue.
I have pictures to prove my point:

China has both manpower and firepower to respond. From great MRLS to Artillery and Anti Tank Weapons and Vehciles and even Light Attack Tanks along with several hundred attack helicopters. But still it would be great boost to Indian Army, only problem is the enemy is way bigger and stronger.

We'll get there. China specific infrastructure and h/w procurement and planning is already in motion. The real battle though will be played out in IOR & SCS. Where I do agree China has stolen a march over us in regards to sub fleet.
But, we have our plan in place for that as well.

By the way @Zarvan. Sunday will be a real humdinger. What say?

This constant expansion of the army has to stop, period.Maintainence, provision of pensions and salaries of such an overbloated goliath leaves little space for modernization. What they need to do is relocate one of India's three strike corps to the northern border. We need to cut down on excess personnel, and use technology instead of manpower.

The 'enemy' can't bring anything close to its full strength to bear over the himalays..once the supply highways and railroads over the himalayas are gone(through PGM and brahmos strikes),a billion soldiers and tanks would be worthless with no food and fuel.

Well you forget China has far more cruise Missiles than you and also massive Air Defence to prevent your Missiles or let say majority of them.

If Pakistan claims credible deterrence against India, India can claim credible deterrence against China.

The conventional power difference between Pakistan and India (in favor of India) is similar to that between India and China (in favor of China).

Actually, I am surprised that India took these many years to actually strengthen their defenses against China with qualitative superiority (US/western weapons and the best of Indian weapons). while other home grown weapons + Russian weapons are directed towards Pakistan.

So now Air defenses are capable of preventing Majority of missiles?? Sometimes i get confused because it seems like Air defenses looses their virility with change of flags...

anyways on topic...Himalayas are a very potent boundary irrespective of how good infra is(either side)...so a war there is going to be a logistic nightmare...as simple as that...
