It's far more complex then that. The army among others have nurtured the problem for short time gain but the army also is the solution. The journey to where we are today began when turned religion into a commodity to be used. From that point everybody has realized that in Pakistan religion is great commodity to be used for political goals. This began the vicious cycle of everybody trying to peddle more religion then the bext guy. Today you can have a discussion without at some point Islam being used to club you - this is even apparent on PDF.
- 1947 - ML used Islam for political cause to establish Pakistan
- 1949 - ML used Islam via Objective Resolution to give them political credibility when they had non
- 1950s - Mullahs realized if others could use Islam to gain power they were missing out on their own franchise.
- 1960s - Mullahs built up their own franchise to gain politcal influence but struggled against British era officials
- 1970s - with rise of Arab oil and workers in Gulf Mullahs starte to gain strength as Bhutto gave in to pressure and declared Ahmedi's non Muslims. This was first instance of Mullah power scoring a political victory.
- 1980s - Gen Zia lacking any political mandate instead harvested mullah power to sustain his power
- 1990s - Mullah power was absolute. No government dare take them on. Thus began the appeasement that we see all the way to the present.
As you can see it was a step by step process. In a country where everybody uses religion for power/profit and where the sovereignty is declared to be enshrined in the almighty is it a wonder the Mullahs will remain potent? Think about this. If sovereignty is with Allah who on earth thinks they are viceregents of the almighty? Certainly not me, you, the chief justice, COAS or the PM. Islam is the bread and butter of Mullahs so they feel they are the viceregents of the almighty on earth. I heard Rizvi saying this.
He said something along the lines of what do those who do doctorates in western law [cheif justice] know about Islam? What do those who spent their lives playing with bats know [Pm IK] know about Islam? What do those who study at military academies [COAS] know about Islam? It is we who study Islam and pray fastiodously everyday who know and represent what islam is. And frankly according to the narrative the Pakistani state has built up over 70 years this is 100% right.
Question: In a Islamic republic who should lead it? Men of Islamic learning [mullahs] or people holding secular credentials like politicians, generals, judges etc? Please go to 4:30.
I have alteady said that Pakistan is on the brink. One wrong move and we might end up with civil war.
