Army To Reduce its Night Blindness, Arjun Mk-II To Have Panoramic Commander's Sight

A questing is the Pakistan army using the american m1a2??:undecided:

No, they are not. They use T-80s (forgot the exact version) and locally produced Al Khalid tanks, in addition to Al Zarar's (heavily upgraded Type 59 tanks).

M1A2 will be too heavy for the Thar Desert.

.
They Helped put a cork against T-72 and Arjun, their defense industry has better insight into Russian products, etc.

Ukraine has inherited T-64,T-72 ,T-80 etc from soviet union !

But T-90 was developed in 1992, So Ukraine won't be of much help when it comes to exploiting T90's weak points..

They are bitter rivals of Russia and know how to exploit their weaknesses. They have a good arms industry. In fact T-84 Oplot would be enough for the T-90.

Army To Reduce its Night Blindness, Arjun Mk-II To Have Panoramic Commander's Sight

DSC02042.JPG

Director of the Dehradun-based Instruments Research Development Establishment (IRDE), S S Sundaram, said in a press conference here today that Arjun Mk-II's Commander's sight will be modified and advanced compared to the one in Arjun Mk-I.

The Commander's sight in Mk-I has just day vision, but the new one being developed for Mk-II will have day and night vision, laser range finder and will be capable of firing also. It will have a range of about five kilometers, and will be ready for evaluation in one year. The lab has also developed a five kilometer Commander's sight for the T-72, which has been successful, and has got orders from the Army for similar commander's sights to be made for T-90 tanks and BMPs.

READ!!!

Read damit , Arjun Already has Pan sights and day/ Night sights.
India in fact makes Pan sights for multiple platforms.

What the MKII two will have is Day/Night Pan sights with a Laser Range finder and Fire control Built in.

The main thing is the addition of the Panoramic Commander's Sight, which is not there currently on the Arjun.

This would be the tank commanders sighting system, while the gunner would have his own.

This sight gives the commander flexibility to search targets 360 degree, while the gunner engages the already identified target.

This would give the Arjun the Hunter-Killer capability.

Al Khalid has this system, and some other newer generation tanks also have this system.

Tank commanders can zoom 360 degree independently of the gunners sight, previously the tank commander and gunner used the same sight for target acquisition and engaging.

Check out AK picture and see 2 imaging systems on both its sides.

here see AK, on one side you will see the round housing for the Panoramic Commander Sight, while on the other side the rectangular housing for the gunners sight.

It doesn't says Arjun is night blind, it says Army to reduce its blindness as an overall factor, while Arjun MK II will be getting the Panoramic Commander Sight which it lacks.

Arjun Already has Day time Pan Sights.
And has Separate Day/Night sights

The combined day sight from Bharat Electronics Ltd. and the thermal imager (formerly from Sagem, now reported to be from El-Op) constitute the gunner's primary sight. The first batch of tanks of the 124 ordered by the Army will have an all-digital Sagem FCS, whereas the second block will have the BEL unit, which will be used for all units thereafter. The commander's own stabilised panoramic sight allows him to engage targets and/or hand them over to the gunner. The Arjun has an auxiliary power unit to operate weapon systems in silent watch mode as well.

yeah, India is correcting the deficiency in the armor field and in a few years time, while enjoying numbers, their quality would be also at par / superior to our frontline armor formations.

And once done, they would be having the upper hand due to numbers as well as quality.

@Taimi can you explain how Pakistan has the better hand??I am not trolling here or blind with Patriotism but just wanna know the reason for it..

I was expecting some reply from you as my knowledge is somehow limited in this field...

arjun already cost almost twice to t90s & if it still not fully fit for combat role at night than its not good. i doubt how much it will cost after further upgrading this beast. Also its rifled main gun doesn't seems promising in long term as smooth bore is the future.
suspension system of arjun is off the class but it further increase the cost & maintenance headache .

Guys it's offtopic but can someone give an idea about how many night-vision capable tanks do india and pakistan currently have?does pakistan have upper hand in number of night fightable tanks at present?

.
What a mess up this is ,
All tanks having different sighting system

T90 - Thales Catherine Imager with Belarus ESSA pan sight system
Arjun - First batch Sagem Samov15 + next batch from BEL
T72 - Sagem + El-Op + ....what not option fitted

Why not get this new TI standard on all tanks

.
Arjun's commander has panoramic day sight and the gunner has thermal imager. I think thr commander has a night vision as well. But what the news reporter failed to get is that in Arjun mk.II the commander will get a panoramic night sight that is not present on current Arjun.

i seriously feel that a tank commander's job is very tough.....

just imagine in a battle field ... a commander has luk out for targets.... control the driver by commands ....assign the targets to the gunner..... plan techniques to inflict max damage on enemy and also save himself and his crew from enemy fire..

all at the same time ......

Thats why modern tanks go for Battle field management (BMS) and Advanced land navigation systems (ALNS) which reduce the burden of the commander. Arjun has both. :)

. .
plzz tell some more about them and their role in reducing the workload ...

ALNS helps by choosing the correct route in the battle field or inside enemy territory as well as giving accurate position with GPS and advanced INS.

This is what bel site says about ALNS.....

Advanced Land Navigation System

Features

# GPS, Inertial and Hybrid mode of Operation
# Fibre Optic Gyro based Inertial System
# More than 100 routes & 500 waypoints can be stored
# Automatic selection of next waypoint once within 50 mts of the selected waypoint
# Flashing of message once within 250 mts of the selected waypoint

The Advanced Land Navigation system is a digital system developed by BEL to facilitate movement of the Armoured Fight Vehicles ( AFVs) / tanks on any terrain with ease and accuracy using the data received by the GPS receiver. It determines and diaplays continuosly the current position and heading of the vehicle on which it is mounted in lambert co-ordinates. It can be operated in three modes, namely, Hybrid, GPS and Inertial modes, thus enabling continuos navigation in case of adverse GPS reception.

The following are the sub units of the ALNS system:
# Inertial Navigation Unit
# Control and Display Unit
# Driver's Display Unit
# GPS receiver and Antenna

INERTIAL NAVIGATION UNIT:
The basic sensor is the "Inertial Navigation Unit" consisting of three fibre optic gyros, and three accelerometers, mounted on three mutually perpendicular angles. This module provides the turn rate of the vehicle and acceleration in each axis. This data is processed by a digital Signal Processor and the distance traveled is converted to IGRS co-ordinates. The software caters for the inertial mode, GPS mode and hybrid mode in addition to 'Gyro Compassing'.

CONTROL AND DISPLAY UNIT:
CDU is the man - machine interface. It has a 320 x 256 pixel, quarter VGA EL display and a keyboard. All system parameters, position co-ordinates, way points and other data are entered through CDU. It is used to select the operating modes, provide data / command to the DDU and to the INU and to display the navigational data.

DRIVERS DIAPLY UNIT:
The navigation page or position page of CDU are displayed on DDU, as selected in CDU. When navigation page is selected, the driver will be able to steer the vehicle to the selected waypoint by just following the marker on the screen. The deviation to WP and distance to WP also get displayed.
