ISLAMABAD - Pakistan’s military has decided to scale up targeted operations against militant sanctuaries in North Waziristan Agency (NWA) with additional troop deployment after Eid, ahead of an imminent broader cleanup in that tribal area.

Army Chief General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani Friday chaired the monthly Corps Commanders Conference ostensibly to discuss ‘routine professional matters’ but reportedly the moot was largely consumed by the anticipated NWA operation. At the meeting that started at the General Headquarters (GHQ) at around 8pm and continued till late night, the commanders extensively discussed the modalities of operation in the agency bordering Afghanistan. Another important and connected issue was border coordination arrangements at Pak-Afghan borderlands.

According to informed security officials, the targeted operations in NWA would be kept as a Low Intensity Conflict, to be gradually scaled up after better target identification of the militants and augmenting the troops’ operational preparedness. The top military and Pakistan Air Force (PAF) commands would hold a crucial meeting by this month’s end or earlier next month to determine strategy for enhanced aerial strikes in the area while International Security Assistance Force (Isaf) authorities would be consulted for intelligence sharing.

As per the tactical plan, the offensive would follow a two-level security procedure, the officials said. In the first, the Army would adopt ground penetration strategy aiming at ‘engaging‘ and ‘securing‘ militants launching direct attacks on security forces and ‘threatening’ ground presence of troops. The second level would involve aerial strikes by the PAF jets and intelligence backup by the Isaf.

“Once our ground presence is augmented and land routes are secured, the operation would enter into level-two,” officials said. They termed enhanced border coordination as an essential component for the success of offensive in NWA.

“The area has to be secured to take on runaway militants who would try to flee across the border or the neighbouring tribal agencies. Foolproof security in the border region is only possible with the intelligence and technical assistance from Isaf,” the sources said.

In their Friday night meeting the commanders are said to have shared concerns over the resurgence of cross-border attacks from Afghan side into Pakistan. Thursday night some nine militants and two security officials were reportedly killed in an exchange of fire at Tripaman Heights, a military post in the Lower Dir. Increased security arrangements were taken at both sides of the Pak-Afghan border after Pakistan and the Isaf military authorities had affirmed their resolve “for coordinated action against terrorists on respective sides of the border who threaten Afghanistan, Pakistan, and the region” following General John Allen’s visit to the GHQ earlier this month.

Reportedly, as decided during the Isaf Commander’s visit, Isaf’s Intelligence Component (IC) and Ground Operations Component (GOC) would be involved to jointly review security arrangements to stem and probe cross-border attacks including the Thursday incident.

Compared to the last month’s two-day Corps Commanders Conference that had discussed broader security and administrative matters, yesterday’s meeting focused the security issue, according to the officials, who also said that for a consolidated operation in NWA, additional troops would be deployed in neighbouring Bajaur and Mohmand Agencies as a backup arrangement.

Presently, one brigade and three infantry battalions of the 19th Infantry Division and six Frontier Corps wings are deployed in Bajaur while only one infantry battalion and six FC wings are deployed in Mohmand Agency, the security sources said.

“Additional brigades are to be moved to these areas as cover-up shield against runway militants,” officials said, adding that South Waziristan already had sufficient troops with four infantry brigades, 11 battalions, seven FC wings and a division deputed there.

The NWA currently has one division, five brigades, 12 battalions and 11 FC wings while additional troops would start reaching the area from alternate divisions after the Eid, security sources said.

Don't watch too much news do you? I have two words for you "Polio Ban", google it and the bubble of a peaceful NWA will automatically burst.

Godspeed soldiers, let's remove this last thorn in our side and rid our borders of this menace of terrorism once and for all. May there be no more senseless violence after this!

.
Well they shouldn't have leaked so much news ! The militants will cross the border ...

What was the outcome of the operation in SWA ? Any better than before ?

Although I wonder if announcing the timing of the attack was intentional or a mistake.
If intentional for the purpose I see it to be, then it would serve as a warning for militants to come to a jirga for talks.
If the intent was to inform the public, then its a mistake since the militants will also know and prepare for it.

For now I think the military is pushing for a Jirga and if you look back, you will notice that all Ops were announced before hand to allow people to move out in time to escape the fighting. This also helps create pressure on the militants and forces the non-motivated foot soldiers to desert in time.

That's what I thought. It would make sense to avoid a fight then to hold one at the whims of the US.
By bringing them to the talks table, we can "convince" them to hold back their offensive and show this as proof to the Americans that we are their best hope for a honourable exit from Vietnam 2.0

Military has allowed the militant leaders to fall back in afghanistan and up their defences by blatantly shouting "we gona attack you after eid"-
Coming from a professional army thats pure non sense btw-

Anyway good luck jawans- kick some *****-

this going to be the most difficult operation. By delaying the operation for so long, they have allowed the militants to prepare and train themselves rigourously. Average militant is better trained than average Pakistani soldier. Remember the commando wing of Militants and how even local people despises them? Another hint of better traing is 2 3 months back incident in which army raided a local house and killed militant commander. Militants retaliated and kidnapped 11 soliders and beheaded them and hung their heads on a electric pylon. Without proper air cover all the time, our troops will face more casualties. Hint ambush in NWA 2010 in which helicopter came and saved the convoy and casualty was 60+ soldiers including commander.

NWA has become the melting pot of TTP. Ameer Muaviya group, Afghani Talib and Punjabi Talib, Chehchen and Uzbek Fighters. chinese militants, arab militants a.k.a al qaedah plus the hafiz bahadur group. So any limited operation will eventually be escalated to all out war because we are going to stear the bee nest.

I suggest that Drones should be discreetly allowed to assit Pakistani troops. Make a total media blackout no news goes out of battlefield, drones are the need of hour, no cobra, no c 130 no F-16 of ours can provide a 24/7 survelliance, recon, and counter attack capability with pin point accuracy in a close combat like when militants attak checkposts than it takes time to place Cobra over that battle field and identify and than starf the area while Drone having more capable sensor suite and IFF capability can identify in a split second.

I suggest no earth scorching techniques this time please. If you all remeber this year, Pak army razed the whole hospital and adjacent shops in NWA because militants fired rockets from the roof of hospital whne convoy was passing through. Be precise and consice which is only possible through better intelligence and air borne intelligence assessts.

I wonder if they can use Saab AWAC in this OP ?

Obama paves way for Haqqani network to be designated as an FTO

NEW YORK: The US President Barack Obama on Saturday removed a key obstacle in labelling the Haqqani Network as a Foreign Terrorist Organisation.
President Obama on Saturday signed the Haqqani Network Terrorist Designation Act of 2012 into law. The law requires the US Secretary of State to submit a report on whether the group meets the legal criteria for being designated as a Foreign Terrorist Organisation.
The Secretary of State will have to file the report within 30 days.
Many lawmakers in the US Congress have urged the Obama administration to designate the Haqqani Network as an FTO. The group has been accused of spearheading attacks on US forces and the US embassy in Afghanistan.
The Obama administration is reportedly reluctant to put the group on the terrorism list while US envoys are trying to negotiate a peace deal with the Taliban that may have included the Haqqani network.
But in pushing for the measure, lawmakers noted that those talks have been halted since last year.
The chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, Mike Rogers, called the resolution’s passage in July “a significant development.”
“The Haqqanis are engaged in a reign of terror in Afghanistan and the network poses the single largest threat for IEDs our soldiers face in that country,” he said.
“They actively plot and kill US and allied soldiers and routinely harm innocent Afghan civilian men, women and children in their path,” he said.
In June during a trip to Afghanistan, US Defense Secretary Leon Panetta emphasised the key role the Haqqani network has played in numerous attacks and called on Pakistan to take action against it.

I think this can also be a reason for Pakistan Army to go ahead with this Operation.

It might be intentional.....to force the militants to panic and perhaps increase their coordination activities by meeting up, radio contact etc, which the Army can scoop up on and gather intelligence.

Army has not released the details of how the operation will be done.................so surprises are there.

I think the best one would be to use Aerial assets for target identification and gather intelligence, then start ground offensive in the cover of air strikes by JF-17s/F-16s. Good way to test A2G capabilities.

With their leaders gone, their command and control system will be in disarray and the footsoldiers will lose motivation. More desertions = Less Casualties, More Demotivation for the enemy

It's not the olympics, they can only train so much.

. Average militant is better trained than average Pakistani soldier.

WTF? How did you acquire that notion?

Remember the commando wing of Militants and how even local people despises them? Another hint of better traing is 2 3 months back incident in which army raided a local house and killed militant commander. Militants retaliated and kidnapped 11 soliders and beheaded them and hung their heads on a electric pylon.

There is no commando wing, it's just a fancy name to them. Lot's of militants claim to be commandos but have no specialist military training. That incident is being taken out of context, a raid party of 15 men was surrounded by 700 militants, they ran out of Ammo, were killed and beheaded. The reinforcements will nullify this numerical advantage.

Without proper air cover all the time, our troops will face more casualties. Hint ambush in NWA 2010 in which helicopter came and saved the convoy and casualty was 60+ soldiers including commander.

That's one incident, the PA does not enjoy total air-cover like the US but our men are trained to do just fine without it, however when needed, air-cover is sent in.

NWA has become the melting pot of TTP. Ameer Muaviya group, Afghani Talib and Punjabi Talib, Chehchen and Uzbek Fighters. chinese militants, arab militants a.k.a al qaedah plus the hafiz bahadur group. True

That option is already in use in other theatres.

The PA does not follow scorched earth policy but in some cases where clearing the building represents a serious risk to the men, then some harsh steps need to be implemented in the greater good of the men and the campaign.

I wonder if they can use Saab AWAC in this OP ?

Only if the Talibs have an air-force in NWA.

One word: Intentional! Let the blame games begin, that is *if*, ISAF fails to secure the border (in all probability)
