NEW DELHI: The Army is fielding the indigenous Arjun tanks for the first time in simulated war games in the deserts of Rajasthan beginning on Sunday.

A ``sub-unit'' of about a dozen Arjun tanks has been fielded along with Russian-origin tanks for the exercise codenamed `Ashwamedha' to test new equipment and concepts in searing heat, said anonymous Army sources.

The Army has kept the news under wraps due to the controversy surrounding the tanks' development and its designer, Defence Research & Development Organisation's (DRDO), and sensitivity to the criticism about their inability to function optimally in high temperatures.

This would be the first recent major non-missile project by the DRDO to undertake the heat tests in a major war exercise in which the ``reactions would not be doctored or controlled,'' according to Brigadier Amarjeet, commanding a tank brigade in the exercise.

The war games in the deserts will begin on Sunday and last till May 3 but preparations for this period of ``intense activity'' have been on for two months. This is the first time the exercises are being held in the operations area of the newly created South Western Command.

The Arjun tank became a major issue of discord between the Army and the DRDO after the former periodically complained about the shortcomings in various components, especially the fire control system in temperatures above 40 degrees centigrade.

Though development of the tank began in 1974, the Army was recently forced to make massive purchases of Russian tanks after it failed to perform to Army's expectations even after 30 years.

However, in mid-2004, the Army was told to set aside its reservations about its weight, profile and malfunctioning systems and place an order for 124 tanks. The same year, five tanks rolled out of the production lines and the remaining might take about five years to manufacture. These tanks would equip two regiments.

In defence, the DRDO points out that the Army wants a tank comparable to Russian, American and German standards but India entered the R&D phase several decades later. In case the tanks pass the test of desert heat and terrain, the DRDO and the Heavy Vehicles Factory would begin planning for other variants such as bridge layers and recovery vehicles.

Besides the Arjun, the assets that will be used for the first time in a major war game are unmanned aerial vehicles, BMP-II (armour plated vehicles for carrying soldiers) and T-90 tanks. In temperatures that would hover around 45 degrees centigrade, Special Forces would try out various methods to move behind enemy lines for surveillance and destruction of logistical dumps.

The exercise would involve fighter planes and helicopters besides tanks, mechanised infantry, medium and field artillery, air defence and elements of signals and engineering units. However, there would be no downsizing of infantry troops despite the involvement of so much of hardware. ``On the ground when closing in on the enemy, the requirement of troops is the same,'' said Major-General Raj Sujlana.

The Indian Army is conducting un-official trials of India's indegenious Main Battle Tank - Arjun - during its summer war games being held currently in Rajasthan.

So far, report sources, the Army has absolutely 'zero complaints' from the performance of the Arjun Tank in dusty, hot desert conditions in Rajasthan. The Army had previously some reservations about the performance and effectiveness of the Tank in operational conditions.

Indegenious Development?

While the project had started as an in-house project, there has been a significant level of foreign involvement in the past few years in this project. Israeli contracters working with DRDO on the Tank has already been well documented in the public media, but sources confirm participation of American and South Korean entities in the recent stages.

In fact American firms are said to have been consulted for setting up large scale production facilities for the Tank.

NERA Armour

Indian developers are believed to have come up with a revolutionary 'honey comb' design for the NERA (Non-explosive and non-Energetic Reactive Armour) Armour and, according to our sources, is said to be performing 'perfectly'.

NERA is a reactive armour which works like any explosive reactive armour but with the crucial difference being the using of energy in form of a charge instead of explosives. Israel, America are reportedly interested in seeking access to this technology.

Arjun Project: Future?

The first 15 tanks of the 124 have already been activated. Of the remaining 109 tanks, the Indian Army is currently putting the first five tanks from the production lines at Avadi, through accelerated build quality and reliability trials. The intent is to verify whether the Arjun production has stabilized, with the requisite quality and performance requirements. Upon successful completion, the remaining 104 tanks will be manufactured in batches. The planned production rate is currently pegged at thirty tanks per year, with the Army requesting fifty per year as the ideal.

On Oct. 13th 2006, the Indian Minister of Defence reported that the Arjun was slated for full scale production soon. He also stated that five tanks had already delivered to the Indian Army and 23 were ready for delivery.

Something interesting...

very strange!

yeah theres a lot of euphoia regarding this. Any ways i kind of get the feeling that IA wouldnt bother fielding it for live excercises unless it was confident abt it.

Shiv Aroor has come up with his usual "Arjun Still Sucks" article in the Mainstream Press.

PS: It is not the first time Denil has got it right. But again, there have been some misses in the past I hear. Regardless, MSM continues the Hate Arjun MBT campaign.

The real worry is that T-90S is prolly almost just as buggy as the Arjun MBT and no one cares to highlight that.

Yeah dude I have no idea who he is, but I have heard his data being bad mouthed on other forums.......I believe mr Zraver might have a opinion on it.....

.
Zraver and Denil had a huge two page debate on IDF about some crummy little armoured vehicle component. From what I could gather, both are extremely knowledgable. Denil says he is a defense contractor; and Zraver is a retired war veteran from the United States.

Either way, this time what Denil claimed has come out to be true. Especially with the Arjun's being fielded (he mentioned it 36 hours before the press got hold) and especially about the NERA being a success. I've personally checked the NERA update with multiple sources.

However, not all of Denil's predictions are postive in nature. The cost of the Arjun (acc. to Denil) is still too high; and U.S. firms are working with the OFB to set-up the production line.

Time will tell if his other predictions come out to be true.

.
Apparently Denil does have some spicy news all the time.He was the first one to break the news about the power of Arjun's gun.
And he told about India's ABM project first on PDF..a Pakistani forum.

Hence Pakistanis came to know about it first than the Indians :D

.
Bull,

What does this mean,

The Indian Army is conducting un-official trials of India's indegenious Main Battle Tank - Arjun - during its summer war games being held currently in Rajasthan.

Then how is this reported?
