Army major martyred during operation against terrorists in DI Khan

A 28-year-old major of the Pakistan Army was martyred on Wednesday in an exchange of fire with terrorists in Dera Ismail Khan, said a statement issued by the Inter-Services Public Relations.

Major Ishaq was killed while security forces were "conducting a search operation on presence of terrorists in a hideout" in DI Khan's Kulachi area, read the statement posted by Director General ISPR Major Gen Asif Ghafoor on Twitter.

Chief of Army Staff Qamar Jawed Bajwa and other army officials attended the funeral prayers of the martyred major who leaves behind a wife and a one-year-old son.

On November 13, at least two soldiers were martyred and four others were injured in a suspected militant attack on a checkpost near the Pak-Afghan border in Bajaur Agency. The martyred soldiers were identified as Capt Junaid Hafeez and Sepoy Raham.

A 28-year-old army major embraced martyrdom on Wednesday as terrorists opened fire on the troops during a search operation in Dera Ismail Khan, military’s media wing Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said in a statement.

Acting on a tip-off, the security forces were carrying out an operation on a militant hideout when an exchange of fire took place. Resultantly, Major Ishaq was martyred, added the ISPR statement. Ishaq is survived by his widow and a one-year-old son.

The funeral was held in DI Khan in which Army Chief General Qamar Bajwa and other higher-ups of the military were also present.

In his message on Twitter, Major General Asif Ghafoor said: “We have a sacred duty at hand of cleansing & defending our motherland; WE SHALL DO IT”.

Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi also expressed deep condolence over the loss of precious life of Major Ishaq.

The premier, in a statement, expressed his deep sympathies with the bereaved family.

He lauded the sacrifices of the security forces for the defence and security of the country.

The prime minister has prayed for eternal peace of the departed soul and for the courage of bereaved family to bear this loss with fortitude.

Earlier this month, two Pakistani servicemen, among them a captain, were martyred and up to 10 terrorists were killed in a cross-border attack from Afghanistan on Pakistan Army check posts in Bajaur Agency, the military had said.

The assault by marauding terrorists set off a gunfight. “During the exchange of fire, brave sons of soil Captain Junaid Hafeez and Sepoy Raham embraced Shahadat while four soldiers got injured,” said ISPR.

Pakistan troops “effectively responded” to the cross-border attack, killing eight to 10 terrorists, while many were seen “running back injured”.
