What's new

Are the Sinhalese people descendants of Bengali and Odiya sea merchants?

Most of the famous monument currently stood there erected after 13th century which shows the influence of south Indian Chola kingdom. But by then Hindu/Buddhist culture was dominant there for at least one thousand years. The traders, preachers as well as many local king who had lineage from the sub continent had their roots in present Bengal region both before and after Chola period. The maritime/river voyage since before the Common era usually started from the southern and eastern part of Bengal and and ended in various part of south east Asia. This was the route of dissemination of Hindu/Buddhist culture in SE Asia. After 1000AD Chola influence enriched that region in art and architecture. It can be compare to Mughal Influence in Indian art and architecture in already Islamic northern India.

Yes and No. Vanga (as Bengal is called in Tamil) influence was primarily there in Myanmar and its adjoining regions. But not much beyond. Infact as far as I know kalinga monks played a very instrumental role in spread of Buddhism in Indonesia in 7-8th century AD. But most of the kingdoms barring Burma had strong Hindu lineage. Even before the Cholas became a force to reckon with in late 10th century, the Pallavas who were grand temple builder themselves had a stupendous influence in SE Asia. They are some of the first South Indian Kings who had the suffix Varman and that influenced in SE Asia whose kings began to name like that. And they were the dominant kings from early 7th century till their demise in early 10th century.

Tamil and SI Kings considered SE Asia comprising of Malaysia, Indonesia, Combodia, lower Thailand, Laos as their sphere of influence and had also excellent equations with the Chinese kingdoms. There was active interactions of saints and monks from Pallava period itself including architecture (mind people those days themselves were divided dominantly into Hindus, Buddhist and Jains in SI. Only after Bakthi movement started by Adi Sankararcharya in 8th century did Hinduism again became dominant in sub-continent). After Cholas dominance, their architecture is a mix of Chola and Pallava styles resulted in SE Asian temples it stand today.

I will find out and share with you ...but she was a lion heat female jumping in a pyre of fire just to burn the body so that the Khilji cant even touch the dead Padmini .... I will share a link of poem written on Padmini :)
@Levina and @Nilgiri , its a nice thread
Thanks for the tag. Sri Lanka was separated from india some 16000 years ago so I am not surprised that Sri Lankans are genetically related to us.

I can confirm a few things which might deviate the thread slightly.

1. Padmini was married to Rajput king Ratan singh. She wasnt his only wife. He had many other wives too.
upload_2017-6-12_22-54-40.png

Palm marks of Padmini and other queens who did jauhar that fateful night when Khilji was to take over Chittor.

2. The stories of Khilji and Malik Kafur are not as famous as Padmini's story but that has more truth to it than the latter.

PS:
I wasnt aware that Padmini was from Srilanka.

I literally dont want to bring Malikaffur and khilji :D ........ by anychance if he got Padmini then Mallikafur might have committed Johar :D :D you are right plygamy was there among Rajputs , I read somewhere that Man Singh had children in 3 figuers

Beauty depends on the eye of beholder , may be you have more beautiful faces than her .... actually she was more famous due to johar and whole state fought for her against Khilji ....... why you think we dislike muslims ;)

What you think was the reason behind Johar and sati in India

Right and Khilji has one big achievement ...he was one of few rulers in who became successful in stopping Mongols ... thats the reason they were not able to enter in South Asia

Wow share more about their current status ......

In Baburnmah, Asrar-ul-Afghan (written in 1604 AD) and Khushal Khan Khattak's diwan, the Ghilzai is written as Ghilji (غلجی ) which is remarkably similar to Khilji (خلجی).......thats how Ghilzais pronounce themselves in their dialect. But not a single medieval source mention Khilji kings to be Afghans/Pashtuns so historians are skeptical about this connection. Early Arab sources mention Khaljis to be "Hepthalites" i.e White huns who were mentioned by Byzantine historian to be looking different from other Huns that they were fair-skinned and beautiful (the proper Huns were mentioned to be "ugly" and yellow skinned people). White huns were linguistically Iranic and only culturally resembled Turks. Turkic dictionary of 11th century mentions a legend which indicates that Khaljis were 'adopted' by Turkic nation.

Ghilzai are assimilated Turko Pashtun people.

Malikafur was a Hindu saini before converted to Islam , he was an eunuch and some historians suggest both Khilji and Mallikafur has amorous cum homo relations .... Mallikafur is one of few generals who had reached upto Tamil Nadu and demolished many temples.

He even defeated Mongols :D :D

It's not about the beauty that is being recorded, but the diplomatic relationship between two kingdoms. There are many instances Sinhalese princesses had being given to Indian rulers and vice versa. They had been recorded.

Dont know about it .But Mongols established their barrack in Afghanistan and effect of that invasion can see even today in Afghanistan because of Hazaras .And Mongols somehow avoided Indian subcontinent .If they want they would have been conquer the entire subcontinent .Mongols were legend at that time.

On topic:I have also heard about this theory .Dont know whether that is right

Not with Sinhalese but certainly with the Moorish.. They have origins from Northern Africa, Middle East, Persia and Afghanistan.. You'd be surprised the how common Arabic and Turkic features among Lankan Moors are especially in the Kandyan and South Western Coastal regions (Beruwela, Galle) in the island

Taprobana/Serendib/Zeylan was a trading hub smack bang in the middle of the East West maritime trade routes for over millennia

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taprobana

From Arabic سَرَانْدِيب (sarāndīb), from Persian سراندیپ (sarândip), from Pali Sīhaḷadīpa and Sanskrit सिंहलद्वीप (Siṃhaladvīpa, “island of the Sinhala people”); dīpa (“island”) in Pali and Sinhala and द्वीप (dvīpa, “island”) in Sanskrit

Sir India was one of the richest places on the earth during the time of Mongols ...I am not sure about the reason what stopped them from conquring India and just Taimur reached upto Delhi and got a wound from the hands of farmers near Delhi ;)
