This mosque is aesthetically pleasing to the eye. Blends in the background and provides fantastic setting. A good example of public architecture.

The building was designed by French traditional architects Marc and Nada Breitman, together with the Dutch company van den Berge & Laban architects and engineers.

B&B have also done work for revitalizing several areas in the city, including the Eastern Harbor area (New Argentinia).

Their project Riva / Piri Reis Squeare is what you see behind/around the mosque. It is in another area of the inner city than the harbor. The degree of integration between surroundings and mosque stems from the faqct that all are by the same architects. The design of the mosque mirrors the so-called Amsterdam School in architecture (dominant in the surroundings) as well as Ottoman architectural design. Both surroundings and mosque are in a sense new old design ;-)

Construction started in 2013 and the building was completed in 2015. The mosque was unofficially opened on 1 April 2016. With a floor surface of 800 m² and a capacity of 1700 people, the 'Westermoskee' (West Mosque, in reference to the 'Amsterdam West' bourough where it is situated in the Chasse neighbourhood) it is the largest mosque in the Netherlands.

The mosque's website is http://westermoskee.nl/nl/ (righthand side of the homepage has a nice picture viewing aid)

The building
Well I might just include Amsterdam in my travels in Europe. We bought a new Mini and were supposed to run it in by going to France late July but things happened and it got delayed. We might still try to fix it in this year - I also want to a tour of Ypres battlefields and see the places where many of my ancestors died fighting for the British Empire. If I do include Amsterdam in my tour I will let you know before hand.

I read somewhere Dtch are the tallest people in Europe. I want to see how my 6' frame fits in Netherlands .....

Let me know, I'ld be happy to provide some suggestions (WW2 > Brit: Arnhem, Canadian: Scheldt estuary, Eastern Holland, notably Limburg.) and tips (where NOT to go in Amsterdam ;-) to the prospective traveller.

I'm 6'2" and used to be one of the tallest my year in high school. During my studies (about +7 years) I interviewed teachers at my old school. To my surprise, walking in between the 16-18 year old school kids, I felt kind of average height.

According to a study by J.W. Drukker and Vincent Tassenaar, the average height of Dutch decreased from 1830 to 1857, even while Dutch real GNP per capita was growing at an average rate of more than 0.5 percent per year. The worst decline were in urban areas that in 1847, the urban height penalty was 2.5 cm (1 in). Urban mortality was also much higher than rural regions. In 1829, the average urban and rural Dutchman was 164 cm (5 ft 4.6 in). By 1856, the average rural Dutchman was 162 cm (5 ft 3.8 in) and urban Dutchman was 158.5 cm (5 ft 2.4 in).

Nevertheless, data derived from burials show that before 1850, the mean stature of males and females in Leiden, Netherlands was respectively 166.7 cm (5 ft 5.6 in) and 156.7 cm (5 ft 1.7 in). The average height of 19-year-old Dutch orphans in 1865 was 160 cm (5 ft 3 in), on the other hand. But orphans surely did not receive the best of nourishment and their mom's health at critical time was likely less than that of non-orphans.

Average height of a male in the Netherlands has gained 20 cm (eight inches) in the last 150 years, according to military records. By comparison, the height of the average American man has risen a mere 6 centimetres over the same period.

Young Dutch men today average 183.8 cm (6 ft 0.4 in).... Close are men from Nordic/Baltic countries (Denmark, Iceland and Norway but also Latvia and Estonia) as well as neighbours (Germany and Belgium). Also close are men from the Dinaric Alps (Dinarides is a mountain chain which spans areas of Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Italy, Kosovo, Montenegro, Serbia and Slovenia), and men from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro and Serbia in particularly.

I would say very safe to travel in Europe. You are not gonna get killed while enjoying a beefy meal !!

While the Dutch males are tallest in Europe...:dance3:

... that doesn't mean they also have the largest size penises.
europe-according-to-penis-size.png

France and Hungary win this one :shout:

Aside: there is a whole bunch of countries (at least 8) for which there is no data on height of men, for which there is data on penis size.... makes you wonder, doesn't it? I mean, why measure the latter but not the former (while you're at it with your measuring tape) :coffee:

@Penguin I and some guys run a history project. Main area of interest is Ypres region of Belguim and adjoining areas of France. The scene the epic battles of WW1.

why measure the latte
Maybe you want to hide something? Inferiority complex?
