2 of the final 8 teams are Arab. Many of the usual Arab performers (KSA, Kuwait and Iraq) are way, way below standard in those years. Besides the best Arab teams nowadays (Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia etc.) or historical giants (Egypt) are not even participating in the AFC for obvious reasons. The Arab football leagues are still best in all of Asia likewise in Africa.

Call me next time Eritrea achieves anything let alone wins an international football tournament.

They are Arab states. Arabic language has been the lingua franca of those states for 1400 years in some areas. People identity as Arabs. Practically everyone has Arab ancestry to various degrees. Arab culture rules supreme. Islam too. Aside from that then Arabs and Berbers are already related. Dozens of ancient Arab tribes (around 200-300) migrated to the Maghreb and settled.

Also much of the settled areas of the Maghreb (coastal) were settled by other Semitic peoples prior to the arrival and Arab conquest. Phoenicians being a major component.

Arabization occurred everywhere in the Semitic speaking world which now almost exclusively speaks Arabic. On the Arabian Peninsula itself Arabization occurred. Hence why you have several distinctive Semitic languages in Yemen and Oman to this day.

Saudi Arabians are not "Gulf Arabs". There is no such thing to begin with. Only 200.000 people speak Gulf Arabic in KSA. More speak it in Iraq.
