What's new

AQIS claims plot to strike US warships was executed by Pakistani Navy officers

let's assume aqis is telling the truth
could these officers actually operate a f22p with less than 10 people?
in the best case scenario they can fire the C-802s. could they even locate U.S warships and and would they even be in range???

F-22P is a Frigate not a missile boat.

.
yeah.
but let's say they get on the ship could they run the systems for radar and fire a C-802 while still docked

Yes and No.
The radar can be run even when alongside the berth just as the weaponry can also be activated.
But attacking the US Fleet from the insides of the Karachi Naval Dockyard is an impossibility.
OTOH, other PN ships and installations in the immediate vicinity could have been targeted.
Sailing the Zulfiqar successfully; from casting off her berth to leaving the Harbor Entrance under the noses of the Harbor Defences at Manora is difficult, next to impossible.
However if the Main Armament was commandeered; there could/would have some "action" in the ND itself (with the collateral damage). My speculative guess is that was the outer limit of the plan; not to sail her out. But that would have been predicated on the next (all important) question.
The question is: At what level and to what extent; the degree "of insider involvement" is/was?
That will be on the minds of the CNS, PN and his PSOs for some time now.
The fortuitous failure of the attack is just "the (proverbial) tip of the iceberg".

.
If the frigate was successfully hijacked, it would've been blown to pieces by the Navy or Mirage V aircrafts. PAF has always trained for such contingencies. Navy could also have mobilized SEAL units to regain control of the boat and to kill everyone onboard.

.
Just a loads of SH!T news & a propaganda of the west.

.
Forget a frigate- In Pakistan people think even a nuke can be hijacked-

Dont know why but when it comes to Pakistan the terrorists- even the educated people across the globe think alike - they think stupid and funny-

.
Sorry to say, majority of our opinion is so bias and "ignorant."

It makes you go o_O when you read replies here. "they can't reach it... we'll teach them a lesson... Bring it on" like statements. Yet they forget how we'd say "osama is nowhere near Pakistan" and then he's found just next to military academy. And then let's not forget GHQ attack and other Naval attack.

We've at admit we've terrorists in our ranks. We have sympathizers as lieutenant/major general. This event is another example. Navy not disclosing full facts or even if attack took place for days until media broke it tells there is far bigger story behind it and public knowing it would be a complete embarrassment in international theatre.

I applaud how this year has been best year in thwarting terrorists attack. But let's not forget even for a moment that we're not secure as we claim to be, or feel to be.

@acid rain@nair

I dont think they could have done much with the hijack, and it will be delusional to believe they could attack a US carrier, the best they could have done is to get this ship destroyed by Pakistani security establishment.......

Plan did not make sense, but one cannot ignore the fact that terrorist could find support inside the military, which should be ignored..... If terrorist can find support in Navy, they can in air force and in army.........

Even I'd they managed to get the ship destroyed, they still win. That ship alone is 175m and us navy would not hesitate to sink it if they're threatened.

Those who think how could they operate.. Well, they have so much insider help, they were probably told where the targets be and how to operate

The naval officers, Mahmoud claims, "responded to the appeal of the scholars and jihad and joined the ranks of the mujahideen."
Mahmoud described the officers' involvement in the attack as a "rebellion" and not just an attempt to strike at the US.

THIS IS HOW TO SALVAGE A FAILED OPERATION

switch to Narrative B, if you fail then sow seeds of mistrust confusion and anxiety among the enemy and its allies.

clearly the the terrorists took their time to make their "revelations" since the shock of the failure was too much to bear.
Pakistan Navy's statement does mention capturing and killing serving and former Naval personnel so the terrorists are not saying anything new which we dont already know.

yes it is worrying that terrorists have found sympathizers among the military. but welcome to the real world. this military is sourced from the same civilian population that sees Osama as their martyred leader and Al baghdadi as an aspiration.

but Pakistani military and its security agencies have a far better record of staying strong and unified and delivering major blows to the terrorists over the course of 11 years of insurgency when the similar or lot smaller incidents in the middle east in the recent times dismantled the armies and broke the countries.

if this was the level of "success" of the terrorists despite the "insider help" then any outsider attempt has no chance at all. no wonder the TTP leadership has run to its supporters in Afghanistan regime and has suffered repeated failures in its recent attacks and Punjabi taliban have lost the appetite for war and want to preach the religion instead

The point is even after operation Zarb-e-Zarb with your military anouncing 1:9 Kill ratio even though no one can independently verify that claim they managed to attack your military installation twice and you are still feeling proud bcoz your army is clearly not giving many information to media to save face . Dont you remember the news was published after 2 days the attack has happened . Can you believe such an attack on a military installation will be hidden from the media anywhere in the world? .

And what a Stupid comparison is that are you comparing Iraq army with pakistan army? Come on man even i know that your army is better than someone in middle east

Al Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent (AQIS) claimed that Pakistani Navy officers were involved in the failed attempt to hijack a Pakistani warship and launch missiles at US Navy vessels in the Indian Ocean.

AQIS' spokesman, Usama Mahmoud, made the claim today in a statement released on his Twitter account. Mahmoud's statement was obtained by the SITE Intelligence Group.

Mahmoud had previously claimed on Sept. 13 that AQIS executed the attack on the Pakistani warship, and published a diagram purporting to show the layout of the PNS Zulfiqar. He said that the attackers had planned to take control of the PNS Zulfiqar and launch missiles at US warships in the Indian Ocean. The PNS Zulfiqar carries at least eight C-802 surface to surface anti-ship missiles. [See LWJ report, Al Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent claims 2 attacks in Pakistan.]

In today's statement, Mahmoud accuses the Pakistani military and media outlets of attempting "to deliberately cover up the truth of this operation and the nature of its objectives," according to SITE. "In an obvious attempt to deceive the world, the official spokesmen for the army and navy portrayed the attack as targeting the Pakistani Navy alone, and its arsenal in the city of Karachi in particular."

But Mahmoud says the "true objective of the operation ... is the American naval fleet that is stationed in the Indian Ocean."

The AQIS spokesman denied that the Sept. 6 assault on the PNS Zulfiqar at the naval base in Karachi was carried out by "intruders," and instead said that Pakistani naval "officers" executed the attack.

"The official Pakistani story alleged that the attackers were merely a group of intruders that breached a military institution of the Pakistani Navy, and broke in from outside," Mahmoud says. "However, all the participants in this fearless operation were officers serving in the ranks of the Pakistani Navy."

The naval officers, Mahmoud claims, "responded to the appeal of the scholars and jihad and joined the ranks of the mujahideen."

Mahmoud described the officers' involvement in the attack as a "rebellion" and not just an attempt to strike at the US.

"Therefore, this operation does not represent an attack on the Americans alone, but it is a rebellion against the Pakistani Navy by its own elements, striking the policy of humiliation and subjugation to America, which the Satanic alliance - represented in the Americanized generals, selfish politicians, and corrupt government employees - imposes," Mahmoud says.

Mahmoud goes on to explain AQIS' "reasons for targeting America." The reasons are standard for al Qaeda, and include the US' perceived war on Islam, and America's support for Israel, Muslim countries, and "secular movements."

The US Navy was chosen as a target because "through its naval military superiority, America is able to control ours straits, our channels, and our waters, and loot the fortunes of our Ummah [Muslim community]," Mahmoud says.

Reports of collusion within Pakistani Navy

While Mahmoud's claim that Pakistani naval officers executed the attack on the PNS Zulfiqar cannot be proven, Pakistani officials and press reports indicate that at least some of the attackers are members of the Pakistani military.

Khawaja Asif, Pakistan's Defense Minister, said that "some of the navy staff of commissioned ranks and some outsiders" were involved in the attack, according to Dawn.

The Nation reported that a former naval officer known as Awais Jakhrani was killed during the attack. Jakhrani, the son of a Karachi Police Assistant Inspector General, had "links with [a] banned organization."

Additionally, three "Navy officials" were arrested in Quetta in Baluchistan while trying to flee to Afghanistan.

Pakistan's Navy has long been thought to be infiltrated by al Qaeda. In late May 2011, Pakistani journalist Syed Saleem Shahzad wrote an article in the Asia Times on the jihadist attack on Pakistan Naval Base Mehran in Karachi. That attack was carried out by Brigade 313, a unit led by al Qaeda and Harakat-ul-Jihad-al-Islami leader Ilyas Kashmiri. In his article, Shahzad noted that Pakistani officials had begun investigating jihadist "groupings" within the Navy in the spring of 2011 and discovered a "sizeable al Qaeda infiltration within the navy's ranks."

After military officials detained and interrogated suspected jihadist infiltrators, al Qaeda threatened to launch attacks against military bases. The Pakistani military opened negotiations with al Qaeda, which ultimately failed. Then Osama bin Laden was killed by US forces in Abbottabad on May 1, 2011. Al Qaeda and allied Pakistani jihadists decided to take revenge, obtaining detailed information on Mehran from their Navy infiltrators.

"Within a week, insiders at PNS Mehran provided maps, pictures of different exit and entry routes taken in daylight and at night, the location of hangers and details of likely reaction from external security forces," Shahzad wrote.

Shahzad's article, which was published on May 27, 2011, is widely believed to have resulted in his murder at the hands of Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence Directorate. He was kidnapped and murdered just two days after it was published.

Though F-22P are good but I think PN might sell them off once another good alternative like OHPs or anything from EU is available. Also France is retiring all of its fleet which if NATO can try can easily come to Pakistan and we can upgrade it with EU supplied equipment.
