Apple suppliers have applied for land with the authority, with a proposed investment of ₹2,800 crore.
YEIDA CEO Arun Vir Singh told IANS that these companies have already deposited 10 per cent of the proposed allocation for land

With Apple eyeing to ramp up manufacturing in India amid Covid-related supply chain issues in China, the Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA) said on Wednesday that some of Apple suppliers have applied for land with the authority, with a proposed investment of Rs 2,800 crore while generating thousands of jobs.
YEIDA CEO Arun Vir Singh told IANS that these companies have already deposited 10 per cent of the proposed allocation for land in Sector 29 under the Yamuna Authority near the upcoming Jewar airport in Greater Noida.
"Seiko Advance Limited, an ink manufacturing company, expressed its desire to make its product on 5 acres of land in Sector 29 of YEIDA," Singh informed.

Seiko Advance Limited alone will invest Rs 850 crore and provide employment to thousands of people, he added.
Sector 29 is well-developed with several available facilities for companies.

The Apple suppliers, along with a known camera parts maker, proposed to set up a unit on about 23 acres of land with a proposed investment of Rs 2,800 crore.
Singh told IANS that Apple suppliers proposed the investment at a recently-held meeting in South Korea.
Seiko Advance creates ink for devices like the iPhones.
Apple CEO Tim Cook had visited the company in 2019, when he had said that the 'Midnight Green' colour dye was "only made by high-quality control and craftsmanship" at its plant.

Meanwhile, Apple is fast forwarding its manufacturing plans in India and Vietnam in the wake of unrest in China over zero-Covid policy which has severely disrupted its supply chain, leading to an acute shortage of new iPhone 14 Pro models.

The Wall Street Journal had earlier reported that the company is "telling its suppliers to plan more actively for assembling Apple products elsewhere in Asia, particularly in India and Vietnam" in order to "reduce dependence on Taiwanese assemblers led by Foxconn".
The China upheaval, which hit its key supplier Foxconn's Zhengzhou factory last month, resulting in violent protests, means "Apple no longer feels comfortable having so much of its business tied up in one place", the report said, citing analysts and people in the Apple supply chain.
Apple aims to ship 40-45 per cent of iPhones from India compared to a single-digit percentage currently, according to analyst Ming-chi Kuo.
Every fourth iPhone will be made in India by 2025, according to J.P. Morgan.

In a fillip to India's thrust on local manufacturing, Apple had earlier this year kicked off production of new iPhone 14 in India, a first for the tech giant as it narrows down the manufacturing period of new iPhones in the country to cut dependence on China.

Buoyed by the ease-of-doing business and friendly local manufacturing policies, Apple's 'Make in India' iPhones will potentially account for close to 85 per cent of its total iPhone production for the country this year, according to industry experts.
Apple first started manufacturing iPhones in India in 2017, with iPhone SE.
The tech giant manufactures some of its most advanced iPhones in the country, including iPhone 11, iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 at the Foxconn facility, while iPhone SE and iPhone 12 are being assembled at the Wistron factory in the country.

The premium smartphone segment demand has been increasing in India among the upper middle class and well obv the wealthy. Some students in my class and most my professors use an IPhone. Ipad is more popular with students as it's priced really well. I'm personally looking at the Tab S8 though.

Mobile exports cross Rs 50k crore($6 billion) in eight months

Apple’s vendors and Samsung are participants in the smartphone PLI scheme announced by the government in April 2020

At a time when exports in many sectors are either sliding or at best remaining stable, smartphone shipments from India crossed the Rs 50,000-crore mark during April-November 2022, up 110% compared to the same period last year. This is also 10% higher from Rs 45,000 crore registered during the entire FY22.

The main contributors to this massive growth are Apple contract manufacturers – Foxconn, Pegatron (both located in Tamil Nadu) and Wistron (located in Karnataka) – and Samsung.

Nearly 40% of the Rs 50,000 crore worth of smartphones exported from India are iPhones, which Apple exports to Europe, West Asia and Asian countries, except China.

Samsung and a range of small exporters, most of which are Indian device makers, contributed the remaining 60%.

Apple’s vendors and Samsung are participants in the smartphone PLI scheme announced by the government in April 2020.

Samsung, which has been manufacturing phones in India for over a decade now, was by far the leader in smartphone production and exports till recently. However, in November, Apple overtook Samsung to clock exports worth Rs 4,300 crore – the highest the company has achieved since it entered the PLI scheme with two of its three vendors in August 2021.

Industry analysts said that the impact of the PLI scheme took about a year to take shape. While exports hovered between $440 and $700 million per month between April-August this year, the average exports since September are nearly $1 billion per month.

Smartphones are also driving up the position of electronics as the leading contributor to exports from India. Till 2018, electronics was ranked as India’s 10th largest export segment, and now it has moved up to the sixth position. It is highly likely that electronics could be in the top five export segments from India at the end of FY23.

“Thanks to the smartphone PLI scheme, we have exceeded expectations in mobile exports. As we transition from import substitution to exports, especially at this scale, India’s competitiveness, especially on tariffs, becomes critical. We also need a robust component PLI scheme to expand the local ecosystem,” Pankaj Mohindroo, chairman, India Cellular and Electronics Association (ICEA), told FE.

The ramp up of mobile phone exports is seen as a major success of the government’s flagship smartphone PLI scheme. The scheme propelled the shifting of Apple’s supply chains – one of the world’s largest and most complicated – in the middle of the pandemic. Industry experts say that the focus will now turn to rapidly increasing value addition through expansion of the components ecosystem by adding Indian companies to the global supply chain.

The government has launched 14 PLI schemes since April 2020. Most of them came into effect from 2021, and some from 2022. In the telecom space, the government launched three schemes – large scale electronics manufacturing (primarily smartphones), telecom and networking products, and IT hardware. Of the three schemes, the smartphone PLI scheme has been the most successful. In fact, it is currently the most successful scheme across all 14 PLI schemes, and also the largest.

The 14 PLI schemes will attract an incentive of Rs 2.4 trillion, with investments of Rs 2.54 trillion. The expected incremental output over the next 5-6 years would be of Rs 28.15 trillion

Chinese cameramaker Sunny Optical to set up $300-m factory for Apple in 🇮🇳

Sunny Opotech, an arm of Zhejiang (China)-based Sunny Optical Technology, has signed an agreement with Apple to set up a $300-million facility in India.
“We are going to roll out the project in different phases till 2026. We have not decided on where to locate this facility. We are going to firm up our plans soon. It will cater to both mobile phones and laptops and computers of Apple,” Welly Liu, President of Sunny Opotech India, told businessline.

Revenue target
He said the agreement with Apple will propel the revenues from India to $3-4 billion from the present level of $300 million. The company is already producing camera modules for Android phones at its Tirupati facility in partnership with Celkon (Seven Hills) for the last three years. Sources said the association will continue for the project for Apple.

" Camera modules for Apple are of high value. The new investment will help the overall strategy to increase the revenues of the camera module business unit (BU) to $10 billion by 2026 from the present $3.5 billion,” he said.

Pegging the global mobile camera module business at $30 billion, he said Apple contributes about $15-18 billion. “Of the $10-billion revenue target for our BU, the contribution from Apple would be about $3 billion,” he said.

The new facility, which will exclusively manufacture Apple products, will commence work in 2024. It will start production after the initial test run of the products in China. “The project with Apple follows a long process that takes about 1-2 years before we go for mass production. We expect mass production in China in 2024. India will follow suit after going for some quality testing process,” he said

The Chinese company, with revenues of $4.5 billion, is listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange. It designs and manufactures camera modules for mobile phone, automobile industry, security, robots and industrial detection businesses. “We are scouting for an ideal location to establish the new facility,” he said
