Apple's contract manufacturers and component suppliers have together created nearly 50,000 direct jobs in India since the production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme for smartphones came into effect in August 2021, government officials said.

Apart from the direct jobs, nearly 100,000 indirect jobs may also have been created by the Apple manufacturing ecosystem in the country, they said, citing data submitted by the companies.

Foxconn, Wistron and Pegatron are the contract manufacturers for Apple's iPhones in India. The component suppliers include Sunwoda, Avary, Foxlink, Salcomp, Seiko Advance Ltd, Eizo Global, Sunny Optical, Huaxing Photoelectric Technology, Jabil, CCL Design, Flex, Lingyi iTech, Zhen Ding Technology Holding, YUTO Packaging Technology, Taiwan Surface Mounting Technology, Sunwoda Electronic Co and Tata Electronics 👏 [Source: Apple Supplier List, compiled by DIGITIMES Asia, December 2022]

By the numbers: Experts believe that Apple, through its contract manufacturers, may have become the largest provider of blue-collar jobs in India's fast-growing electronics sector. The government officials said Foxconn accounted for more than 40% of the jobs created by the three Apple contract manufacturers.

Samsung, which is also a beneficiary of the PLI scheme, employs more than 11,500 people at its Noida unit, the officials said.

The Tata Group, which has set up a plant in Hosur to make components for iPhones and other smartphones, employs about 10,000 workers. The Tatas expect to increase this to 45,000 in the next 18 months, officials said. The conglomerate is also in discussions with Wistron to jointly manufacture iPhones in India.

Cutting reliance on China: According to experts, Apple locally produces 85% of the phones it sells in India. Before the PLI scheme was introduced, it used to import nearly 90% of iPhones from China.

Becoming a manufacturing hub is so much important today. I hope India will do well in this area..

Indian Govt Wants Apple To Make iPads And MacBook In The Country, Plans PLI Boost For Production

The Indian government wants Apple to manufacture iPads and MacBooks in the country, for which it is reportedly mulling an increase in the outlay for production-linked-incentive or PLI that goes into IT hardware manufacturing.

As per sources quoted in a TOI report this week, the government has seen the potential of Apple’s production layout thanks to the wide base iPhone assembling that is being done in India over the past few years with the help of vendors like Wistron, Foxconn and Pegatron.

Now the regime believes the next step in this evolution should be Apple having iPad and MacBooks manufactured in the country as well. The IT Ministry has been laying the groundwork for making it happen, and its proposal to the Finance Ministry suggests increasing the PLI outlay from Rs 7,350 crore to Rs 20,000 crore in the coming years.

The new PLI budget will help the government attract more brands and also encourage the likes of Apple to increase its production hub in the country. India is one of the countries where Apple could focus more in the coming years, as its dependence on China has become a concern for the company.

Interestingly, the TOI report suggests the govt might consider allowing joint ventures (JV) between Indian and Chinese companies to get the project off the ground.

Apple has relied on India for local manufacturing of iPhones, including the latest 14 series vanilla model. Tata Group is also likely to jump into the make-in-India iPhone bandwagon.

But having iPads and MacBooks made here is a different ballgame altogether. We have other laptop brands manufacturing in the country, so the ecosystem is definitely here but the Cupertino-based giant might want further assurances and possibly tax breaks to increase its production setup in the country. Bringing Apple here could also encourage other laptop giants to set up shop here

Still remember few people saying that these jobs are very low in the food chain and aren’t high tech etc etc.

Ask these 50k people if they would accept ONLY high tech jobs like designing and manufacturing space craft.😀
Some of them would probably laugh on the person asking this stupid question.

Please let us know when the next Foxconn Factory burns down due to nonpayment of salary arrears. As has happened numerous times before.
