Apple Inc. may have paid millions of U.S. dollars to China's Huawei for patent licensing last year, according to data released by China's State Intellectual Property Office and estimates made by Tencent Technology.

The Chinese company licensed 769 patents to Apple while Apple's licensed patent to Huawai was 98 in 2015.

The numbers were made public for the first time and after the two companies reached a series of agreements regarding patent licensing last year.

Huawei spent US$9.2 billion, or 15% of its sales revenue, in 2015 on research and development of new technologies.

That was higher than Apple, which spent US$8.5 billion, or 3.5% of sales revenue, on research and development last year.

Huawei has 52,550 patents in China. Internationally, it has granted patents of 30,924 cumulatively, of which 5,052 are in the U.S. and 11,474 are in Europe.

usd 9.2 bln spent in China are much more than usd 8.5 bln in USA because the cost of everything including materials, salaries, etc, etc. is higher in USA than China.

why so much? apple doesn't make any HW in their phones that cost a lot of money to develop... i highly doubt it cost them that much to just add a few new features to their ios software and redesigning arm processor. lol....... huawei spending on the other hand is understandable since they aren't just simple smartphone business.

There is an iPhone made especially for the Chinese market.

To connect to China Mobile and other Chinese networks they probably need proprietary hardware/software (and required Chinese government spying stuff)

Huawei begins charging patent fees from Apple
May 10, 2016

It's been revealed that Apple has started paying patent fees to the Chinese telecommunications giant Huawei to the tune of hundreds of millions of dollars a year.

According to a report from the Guangdong Intellectual Property Office, Huawei licensed 769 patents to Apple in 2015, while the American company offered Huawei 98 patents in return.

The report says the two companies reached a series of agreements last year, including patents relating to GSM, UMTS, LTE and other wireless communication technologies.

Although having a team of outstanding designers, the American multinational technology company Apple still has to pay patent fees to its competitors.

When asked for further details, Huawei said it was unable to do so, due to a confidentiality agreement that it had signed with Apple.

The company added that it always abided by the rules of international intellectual property, and solved intellectual property problems in a number of ways, including through cross patent licensing and business cooperation.

Based in Shenzhen, Huawei is the largest telecommunications equipment manufacturer in the world, having overtaken Ericsson in 2012.

According to the statistics released by World Intellectual Property Organization, Huawei topped the table again in terms of international patent applications in 2015. It also jumped to fourth place in Europe, according to the annual report released by European Patent Organization.

The Chinese tech giant also applies for the protection of its intellectual property rights outside China.

By the end of 2015, Huawei had obtained 52,550 patents in China, 30,613 in foreign countries, and has been authorized 50,377 patents in total.

Huawei eyes share growth with Honor
Shanghai Daily, May 12, 2016

Huawei Technologies plans to capitalize on its Honor sub-brand to expand its share of the market segment for phones priced between 2,000 yuan (US$308) and 4,000 yuan, the company said yesterday.

Honor, which targets young consumers, generated US$6 billion in revenue and sold 40 million smartphones in 2015.

"Cutting-edge technologies, instead of competitive prices only, have become top reasons for consumers to buy new phones in China," said Zhao Ming, president of Honor business.

Huawei's huge investment in research and development has helped Honor to sell well in the domestic market and 74 overseas regions.

Huawei yesterday displayed its new Honor V8 smartphone that features super high-resolution screen, dual cameras and rapid battery charging at the CES Asia 2016. Its price starts from 2,299 yuan.

The V8 smartphone supports VR glasses, which were also unveiled yesterday by Huawei.

At the end of the first quarter, Samsung led globally with a 24.5 percent share, followed by Apple's 15.3 percent and Huawei’s 8.2 percent, said IDC.
