Apple Inc: The Big Brother

Apple products are very nice but they will never replace Microsoft based ones mainly due to the ease to usage and huge library of content that Microsoft offers. Add to that the cost of Apple computers and very small amount of content available is a huge problem for heavy users and business. Accounting and SCM programs rarely work on a Apple system and games are another no go. With the on set of Window's 7, Microsoft has greatly reduced the gap and im sure they are working on getting parity in terms of performance with Apple soon. Apple is a giant but not a leader in the industry, the PC is still the king by far and will remain so.

.
Don't be ridiculous, Apple just filled the void and is highly successful in this current stage. I am sure that other companies will try and out do them but for now Apple is the gold standard for multiple products.

Even if a few paranoid people boycott them, it would not even dent their ever growing fan base.

But you have to remember that Microsoft still is a major player within the industry albeit not as good in terms of quality.

Btw, Apple even though their products are expensive, they are better than all their competitors and iPad's are not competitors of notebooks but rather tablets.

Are you joking ? spend the same amount of money that you do on a Apple computer to get a Microsoft based system and you will pretty much get the same quality. Microsoft based system like Alienware beat any Apple computer hands down. People buy cheap $600 laptops and then compare it to a $2500 mac book. Get a Alienware M17X and let me know which apple computer even comes close. This quality myth is a nice card that Apple plays but as usual it cannot back it up. The Iphone 4 has a huge disappointment with many technical problems not to mention the reception issues, The Ipad is a totally useless piece of junk for $600 and products like the Magic mouse consume battery faster than a laptop. Apple has quality but you can get the same quality and many more features for the same amount.

^^^^^

Quality as in the build of the product is better than others, especially plastic products made by others. Even of OS is more resilient and less likely to crash, catch viruses, slow down etc.

It certainly does something right that people churn out big bucks for their products.

Apple thrives a lot on the reputation of Steve Jobs himself. He is a kind of man army.

I still remember few months back when there reports of Steve falling ill, Apple shares prices went down.

I wonder if Apple will be able to maintain its reputation without Steve Jobs.

I dont know what "Plastic"products are you talking about, if you comparing Apple products to generic sub $1000 products then your comparison is wrong. The OS is reliant for sure but nothing that different from Windows 7 is is very reliable as well but the main selling point the content which Apple can never match. A good anti-virus protects you from all the crap as well. Again your comparison has to be between products of the same class, compare Apple laptops with high end laptops such as Alienware or anything Microsoft based laptop priced over $2000.

Yes!

And then we have myths about Apple 'just works'. Oh yeah, for about two decades 90% of world has been using Windows computers in very critical places like hospitals, airports, corporations....if Windows were really THAT bad then hundreds of millions of bad computers would be a nightmare. But that has not been. Sure, Windows computers get viruses etc but then hackers are likely to target a platform with wider deployment then a niche like Apple's. Sure there have been hardware 'drivers' issues but Microsoft cannot be blamed for that: Any Tom Dick and Harry could take Windows and run with it on countless variations of platforms.
You could not legally do that for Apple's products and you still cannot. All because Jesus Steve Jobs is greedy to the extreme degree.

In short, Apple is a cult. And @Marcus gives a great example of the role of Steve Jobs. The cult is no different than Branch Davidian or Jim Jones. Remove the cult leader and the cult goes away.

Steve Jobs refuses to retire. Bill Gates retired and has contributed so much to charity causes that he is reportedly the best charity organization in the world. But Apple is different. It caters to the rich who like to sit in Starbucks sipping expensive latte, looking 'cool' with their Macs. A bunch of Narcistic fanbois.

Well the work that I have to do is a lot better done on a Mac than on windows, that is why no matter how much you tell me otherwise, I will work on what get my work done quicker.

And I used to work on windows.

Muhammad Bin Qasim is typing this on a macbook pro...

Apple is the best... and starbucks lattes are fine too... plus there is nothing wrong with being narcissistic... a little anyway...

and God knows best

Meengla typing here on an HP dv9910us laptop from 2008. 17" screen. Windows 7 Professional. 3 GB RAM.
Never crashes. Never been infected. No antivirus running. Never even been a Trojan.
Bought about 2 years ago and has already made me several thousands in my side-business.
Cost: $749 at the local Best Buy.
Best bang for your bucks! When time to upgrade to something else--I will sell it to someone and for a sub-$1000 system will find another great system.

Why do people buy $100 Diesel jeans instead of $20 Levis? Or drive a Lexus rather than a Honda?

Sure, the product may be a tad better, but nowhere near justifying the price differential.

Apple has successfully established itself as the 'cool' brand. The white earphones were the thing to have when iPod came out. Apple made sure with those silhouetted ads. The same thing now with iPad.

Apple has realized two things that others seem to have missed:

- 90% of people out there value usability far more than power. Most people still use their computer mostly for net surfing, music/videos and social computing. They are not writing 100-page theses on it or doing heavy duty, processor-intensive computing. They want something that is handy, usable and looks cool.

- Electronics are cheap enough that people can afford to buy different devices for different purposes (mp3 player, phone, netbook/iPad, game console, PC, ...)

I am not pro- or anti-Apple. In fact, I used to be a hard core Unix fan and anti-Microsoft but, after being forced to use Linux lately, I can't wait to go back to Windows.

Ladies and gentlemen, allow me to introduce Jesus Steve Jobs! He can never be wrong. He is to be loved. All is products are flawless. He is a visionary. And after he passes away some other with 'Jobs' in the name must take over otherwise the great cult will be doomed.

@Developereo,
Good arguments. I don't think it can be denied that Apple knows how to market its products.
I think if you stay in Linux market then good. I wish they get their act together and be THE dominant platform. However, I still think Microsoft is a far more open company which has allowed for the computing revolution to go on for decades. There are literally thousands of hardware and software products which were made possible mainly because Microsoft did not care how you used their OS. If Apple had won the race back then the computing revolution would be much slower and more expensive.
Apple was and remains a dangerous technology company in my books. I acknowledge they are 'successful' but then so was G.W.Bush. Success does not always translate to being 'right' or being 'better'.

I agree that Apple's control of content is far more insidious than Microsoft's control of technology. I am sure if Apple every got to be as big as Microsoft or IBM, there would be legal action against it.

As for Linux, it is an absolute disaster -- it is the antithesis of Apple and a clear reminder why geeks should not design user interfaces. Copy-paste doesn't work consistently across apps, confirmation dialogs have the 'Cancel' action as the first and default button, gratuitous animations (which probably looked cool to the geek who wrote them) give me headaches after a while. The list of user interface disasters goes on and on...
