At an all-parties conference held on Tuesday, many political parties, including the Pakistan People’s Party, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz, the Pakistan Muslim League-Functional, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf and the Qaumi Awami Tehreek, rejected the Muttahida Qaumi Movement chief’s demand for forming new provinces and administrative units.
They unanimously passed a resolution against Altaf Hussain’s demand that 20 administrative units should be carved out.
The conference was convened by Qaumi Awami Tehreek’s Ayaz Latif Palejo at the residence of Jamiat Ulema-e-Pakistan chief Shah Owais Noorani, son of the late Shah Ahmed Noorani.
They described the demand for the division of Sindh as a conspiracy against democracy and peace.
In the resolution, they vowed to resist the move. During the tenure of former prime minister Yousuf Raza Gilani, the PPP had moved a resolution for the formation of Seraiki and Bahawalpur provinces and the division of Balochistan as well. But a heated discussion ensued and the Pakhtuns in Balochistan reached a consensus that the areas they dominated should be declared their province. However, this had not materialised for some reasons.
Last week, the MQM chief reiterated his demand for more provinces and administrative units, which, he said, would strengthen the country.
The resolution passed at the all-parties conference was signed by 42 major and smaller political parties as well as civil society organisations.
It read: “This conference strongly rejects the formation of new provinces in Sindh and other parts of the country as it would promote, hate and anarchy and weaken the federation of Pakistan.”
The parties resolved that they would not compromise over any agenda that would disintegrate Sindh and Pakistan.
It was pointed out that in the wake of the floods and Operation Zarb-e-Azb, the country could not afford to deal with such an issue.
The MQM chief’s demand, it was noted, would only benefit the imperialist forces on whose behest Hussain was working.
On the insistence of two Baloch leaders, Yousuf Masti Khan and Abdul Hai Baloch, another resolution demanding protection and rights for the Baloch people was also passed.
The resolution against the formation of new provinces would be submitted to the Sindh Assembly secretariat on Wednesday (today) for discussion in its proceedings on Thursday.
Speaking on the occasion, PML-F’s Shehryar Maher, the leader of the opposition in the Sindh Assembly, said if the people of the province kept their house in order, no external forces would threaten them. He pointed out that there was no provision for new provinces in the constitution. However, he conceded that the political parties ruling the province for decades had been unable to deliver to the masses.
PPP Senator Saeed Ghani said the division of Sindh could never be accepted.
He noted that the MQM had time and again put forward the demand to divide the province but the PPP had always opposed it.
He went on to say that there was no logic behind making such a demand at the present time.
PML-N Sindh President Ismail Rahu said the political parties of Sindh, whether they were in the parliament or not, opposed the division of the province.
“If the demography of Sindh is forcibly changed, then Pakistan’s demography would also be in danger,” he added.
Liaquat Ali Jatoi, a former chief minister who recently parted ways with the PML-N, said he would safeguard the rights of the province and nobody would be allowed to divide the motherland.
Arbab Ghulam Rahim, another former chief minister who joined hands with the PML-N for the last general elections, said a two-third majority was required for making a constitutional amendment.
He too admitted that all leaders of Sindh were guilty of not coming up to the expectations of the masses.
PTI Sindh President Nadir Akmal Leghari reiterated his party’s stance that the formation of new administrative units and provinces would be opposed.
He added that the people of Karachi had given their verdict at the PTI rally on Sunday that the city did not belong to one party.
PML N MPA Irfanullah Marwat noted that Karachi had a large population of Pakhtuns and it was not the property of a single political party.
He also criticised his party’s leadership for not finding a replacement for the incumbent Sindh governor who belonged to the MQM.
PML-F MPA Mehtab Akber Rashdi said the demand for the division of Sindh was against the spirit of the constitution.
Rahila Tiwana, Nand Kumar, Abdul Hayee Baloch, Karamat Ali, Yousuf Masti Khan, Naz Baloch, Haji Shafi Jamote, Mohammad Hussain Mehanti and Dr Khalid Soomro also rejected the MQM’s demand while speaking on the occasion.
