Apache down-selected for Bangladesh attack helicopter requirement

I disagree with Hasina's pro India leanings.

But I have to give her credit in her attempts to improve the military.

Both in her first tenure and then this one.

Hehehe you will be given red carpet welcome should you come to Bangladesh.

No such plans.

Havn't been since I was a kid and no foreseeable reason to go now.

Boeing has confirmed that its AH-64E Apache attack helicopter has been down-selected for a potential programme in Bangladesh.

Company officials confirmed the development - which points to growing defence ties between the South Asian country and the United States - in a media briefing on 21 January.

Boeing's Terry Jamison, senior manager for global sales and marketing for attack and cargo helicopter programmes, said the programme in Bangladesh is proceeding through a US Foreign Military Sale. He added that Bangladesh is looking to procure the AH-64E through a competitive-bidding process through which the Boeing platform had beaten competitors "on price".

He said, "[In Bangladesh] we have been down-selected not just based on capability, but we went head-to-head with some of our competitors and we were down-selected based on price."

Jamison added that Boeing had identified "a lot of opportunities" for other sales of the AH-64E across the Asia-Pacific. He said such opportunities were evident not just in developed markets but also in new and developing markets - such as Bangladesh.

Boeing officials indicated that cost efficiencies in the Apache programme were being achieved through economies of scale and the certainty of long-term modernisation. About 1,200 Apaches are in operation in global markets, said officials, and the platform has been identified by the US government to undergo modernisation through the late 2040s.

A total of 15 countries currently operate the platform, although Boeing expects that number to increase in the near future.

In the Asia-Pacific, Boeing is offering the AH-64E to Australia to meet its Project Land 4503 Armed Reconnaissance Capability (ARC) requirement for 29 aircraft. The programme is expected be worth more than USD3 billion. A Boeing spokesperson told Jane's that the company's proposal for Australia would provide "capability, cost, and schedule certainty" without the risks of additional development.

Yeah that's what I'm asking. Was Apache not around when we opted for the Cobra??
Why? No interest is seeing the Su-35s, Su-30s, J-10s, Mig-35s, and EFTs we have procured so far? Your loss.

It would make no sense for you to get Apaches. You already operate Cobras so Vipers would be a natural and logical transition.

You got your Cobras in the 80's. Apaches were only available to rich allies of the US back then. Even to this day, India is the only third world country so far to have struck an Apache deal.
Far from a done deal for BAF.

You are right about Khaleda but she stood strong in the face of MM when the latter started to build an embankment in the south bank of Naaf Dariya. There was fighting which was not covered by international press. General Fazlur Rahman claimed 600 MM troops were killed in the encounter. MM finally backed down from the embankment project. Before that Khaleda contacted Muslim countries to get support. SA Crown Prince Abdullah (Later King) came. He went straight to Cox's Bazar and declared his country's intention of helping BD. Even PA troops gathered in Karachi in case BD requests for help irrespective of 1971.

In comparison Hasina did nothing and because of kowtowing and General Aziz receiving gifts of expensive jades fro MM when he unexpectedly visited there. The result was MM claiming St. Martin belongs to it. Their maps showed it that way. All because of kow towing by the weak BD leadership.
Death of 600 soldiers by BD troops in Naf skirmish in 2001 is a highly politicised event. It was during BNP tenure and BNP does chest beating for killing 600 Burmese troops where BAL claims that no one got killed in that event. No one really knows how many people got killed.

Below is a picture where it has been said that no one died in 2001 Naf skirmish

It was during BAL rule. The toll was nowhere near 600.
This was hardly a politicised event. You are confusing it with the skirmish with India earlier that year.

I have no family left there.

I would love to visit since its been so long.

I have many fond memories of Bangladesh from my visits as a kid.

I especially miss the food!

And the Coke in glass bottles!

Were you born outside Bangladesh? Do you still retain BD citizenship?

You mentioned Khaleda.

I am not very familiar with Bangladeshi politics but how do you reconcile the fact she axed the completion of the Mig-29 deal and tried to sell them off.

Also similar case with the naming and deactivation of BNS Bangabundhu.

Both seem to be not conducive to strong national defence irrespective of the politics.
Yes, you are right about what she did on Mig-29 and BNS Bangabandhu out of jealousy towards Hasina. However, we must give credit to her if she had stood firm against the 2001 MM troop maneuvering in the Naaf River. Hasina with so many billion dollars worth of weapons and ammunition purchase had been unable to do the same or similar.

Only yesterday, as a result of BD's weak response on Rohingya, MM claimed St. Martin island belonging to it. It even does not want to accept the arbitration by the International Tribunal or something and claim much area in the BoB as its own.

When a tiny MM is doing all these nefarious things every day, our people in the PDF are forecasting when BD missiles (3,000 km range) will hit New Delhi.
