India should get 'return gift': Akhilesh Yadav on Boeing deal | Zee News

Last Updated: Friday, September 25, 2015 - 19:58

Jaipur: With India clearing the USD 3.1 billion helicopter deal with aviation major Boeing ahead of the Prime Minister's US visit, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav on Friday expressed hope that the country would get a "return gift" from America.

"I heard before leaving on the US trip, the Prime Minister said the chopper deal has been cleared. This is good for the nation and army that they would get new helicopters from (the) US..."

"We are very ancient people. There has been a tradition of return gift in our families and society... The PM has gone to the US... Humein badha return gift milna chahiye (we should be getting a huge return gift)," Yadav said, addressing an event of the All India Yuva Yadav Maha Sabha here.

Speaking in the presence of Union Minister of State for Defence Rao Inderjit Singh, Yadav said the deal would be good for the defence ministry.

The Cabinet Committee on Security, chaired by the Prime Minister, had on September 22 cleared the deal for 22 Apache attack helicopters and 15 Chinook heavy-lift choppers with aviation giant Boeing. Modi is currently in the US on an official visit.

Earlier talking to mediapersons, the UP Chief Minister said his government had received the Justice Vishnu Sahai Commission report on Muzaffarnagar riots and that it would be tabled in the state assembly soon.

When told that the report mentioned involvement of ruling and opposition parties in the riots, Yadav countered, "Have you (reporters) read the report? No... Aap mediawale bhi toh aag lagate ho... Breaking news us se kam nahin hai (media also ignites flames. Breaking news is nothing less than that)."

Such as what? What a buffoon.

Don't even know if India even has a program for such an aircraft.

HAL's LCH... its a light category attack helicopter... Undergoing trails and will be mass produced from next year. Appaches will complement them in the battlefield

When are we making something like Apache?

When we get these Apaches our scientists will tear one apart and go through it and will reengineer the required parts and will rename and will add it on to HAL LCH.....

I always thought they brought this aircraft so that they can evaluate and then use some design and similar concepts (idea) in our program.

I don't think there is any program (if there is any please enlighten me) dedicated for a heavy attack helicopter....

May be they are waiting for the pros and cons of the light attack helicopter and so they can make the bigger one much better...

India, US sign deal for purchase of 22 Apache helicopters | Zee News

Last Updated: Monday, September 28, 2015 - 23:33

New Delhi: India on Monday signed a nearly USD 3 billion deal for purchase of 22 Apache attack helicopters and 15 Chinook heavy-lift choppers with American aviation giant Boeing and the US government.

The first helicopter is likely to be handed over to India in the next three to four years.

"The contract for purchase of 22 Apache and 15 Chinook helicopters were signed here today," Defence Ministry spokesperson Sitanshu Kar said.

The contract has a clause to place follow-on orders for 11 more Apaches and seven extra Chinooks.

The helicopter deal has survived over 10 price validity extensions from the American side with the last one being for a month as desired by India.

While the Chinook helicopter deal is a direct one with the US firm, the one for Apache is a hybrid.

? A part of the Apache deal was signed with Boeing for the helicopter and the other with the US government, under Foreign Military Sales route, for its weapons, radars and electronic warfare suites.

? Sources said the total cost of the contract will be around USD 3 billion.

Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar had last week said that the contract, which will have a 30 per cent offset clause, will bring in business worth about USD 1 billion for the Indian defence industry.

? Offset policy was first introduced as part of the Defence Procurement Procedure (DPP), 2005, under which a foreign company has to invest back a portion of the deal into India.

? The Cabinet Committee on Security had on September 22 cleared the deal which had been hanging since 2013 when the cost negotiations were completed.

? Many in the defence sector had expected the deal to be signed during the visit of US Defence Secretary Ashton Carter in June this year.

? The US has been pushing for this contract as it will further bolster American presence in the burgeoning defence? market of India.

American companies have over the last decade bagged defence contracts from India worth around USD 10 billion, including for aircraft like P-8I maritime surveillance planes, C-130J 'Super Hercules' and C-17 Globemaster-III in the transport category.

? Both platforms, which have been in combat in Afghanistan and Iraq, had beaten off competition from Russia which had offered its Mi-28N Night Hunter and Mi-26 heavy-lift copters.

? The 22 Apache AH 64D Longbow helicopters are one of the most advanced multi-role combat helicopters, featuring all-weather and night-fighting features, ability to track upto 128 targets in less than a minute and engage with 16, besides stealth characteristics, advanced sensors and beyond visual range missiles.

? India will also be acquiring Hellfire missiles and rockets.

NEW DELHI: American aviation giant Boeing today said it is in talks with Indian firms to manufacture parts of Apache helicopter, a day after it signed a contract with India for 15 Chinook heavy-lift and 22 attack choppers.

It said the contract for production, training and support of Apache and Chinook helicopters will greatly enhance India's capabilities across a range of military and humanitarian missions.

India will receive 22 AH-64E Apache attack helicopters and 15 CH-47F Chinook heavy-lift helicopters. Both are the newest models of those choppers and the first one likely to be handed over to India in the next three to four years.

"This is a milestone in Boeing's expanding commitment to India," Pratyush Kumar, president, Boeing India said in a press statement.

He said the acquisition offers Boeing an opportunity to further accelerate 'Make in India'.

"Large sections of the Chinook fuselage are already manufactured in India and discussions are ongoing with our Indian partners to make Apache parts," he said.

Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar had last week said that the contract, which will have a 30 per cent offset clause, will bring in business worth about $1 billion for the Indian Defence industry. He said at least 50 per cent of these would be direct export.

The Apache is a multi-role attack helicopter. The AH-64E Apache, the most modern variant also flown by the US Army, features enhanced performance, joint digital operability, improved survivability and cognitive decision aiding.

The CH-47F Chinook is an advanced multi-mission helicopter operated by the US Army and 18 other defence forces.
