New Delhi: Expressing concern over Chinese military infrastructure buildup, Defence Minister AK Antony today said India was working to match it to protect the country’s territory and build an effective deterrence.

“China is expanding its military capabilities and their infrastructure in the border area is also increasing substantially and we are concerned about that,” he said.

The Minister made these remarks when asked about India’s response to Chinese military modernization in the Eastern and Northern sectors.

“We have been improving our infrastructure and military capabilities in the eastern sector. We are strengthening our military capability and infrastructure not for confrontation, but to protect our territory and also to build an effective deterrence…so that we can protect every inch of Indian territory,” Antony said.

India has been deploying its frontline fighter aircraft Sukhoi-30 MKIs on its airbases along the Chinese border in the North-East and has raised two Mountain Divisions there.

Ultra light howitzers and tanks under new armoured formations are also planned to be deployed in the region.

Asked about the existing defence ties with China, Antony said the Defence Secretary-level talks between the two sides will be held next year.

“Defence exchanges with China are again resuming. I hope the defence dialogue (between the two nations) at the Defence Secretary-level will again resume next years,” Antony told reporters on the sidelines of Fifth South Asia Conference here.

India and China will hold the Annual Defence Dialogue (ADD) in January next year during which the two sides are expected to discuss resumption of their joint army exercise and the pending border issues between them.

Unless there is a will to surpass China in infra build up, India wont be able to match it.. India is still on a reactive policy. Its time to become proactive. It is simply a Spineless statement to keep the nation happy..

Analysis points out that western media hype up
"threats from China" in order to bolster their
arms sales in the Indian market. And India tends
to accept this tone to seek excuses for its
military expansion. It's obvious that "threats
from Chinese military expansion" can create a
good environment of arms business for the west and India.

Before matching china militarily, we need to match china economically..That means we need to wait 20 more year and work harder then them...

One begs the question ....Just how is it possible for India to match China economically ?

It is possible to match Chinese military infrastructure in the border with China. China's economy is three times the Indian economy. But note that infrastructure is labour intensive and India has got cheap labour.

Your Points taken and each & every Indian know what you have written. But you have completely ignored the basic point "MATCH" and this is an uderstatement. Our infra is lagging behind China and it is a truth. Be it our border infra or the infra of our most developed state. We are in no comparison with China. I am agaist arms race but there should be distinct race in Infra and development. But we are no where in the race, thats it..

Then Indians should start saving money to buy more military hardware(s) from Uncle SAM but I hope India doesn't suffer the USSR fate.

Oh? And you know this how? What lopsided reasoning! Jeeez!

In a similar vein, you didn't mention about China putting up the red flag and going hyper by the Indian military build-up in the region? Are they also creating an environment for arms business like you say India is doing?

That is what Chinese members here and you feel. But we living in bordering states with China, see rogue PLA local commanders sending their troops into our territory which is demarkated as no man's land. AS per international law, neither side should come on that territory. I know this because my state borders China directly.

You Pakistanis feel that we are bluffing just because you are Chinese friends. Don't let them fool you. Open your damn eyes. West has an advantage yes; but we DO really have a problem much before USA or Europe was this close to us.
