Antony’s South Korea visit to boost defence ties

Kim Jong-Il just went to China looking for more support, and how's the wind blowing in Blue House? President Lee welcomed the visit. BTW, South Korea just offered their own aid to the North.
.

this was humanitarian aid seeing the economic shambles of the north ...certainly doesn't translate to better relations or approval of Kim Jong...

The way I see it, the only possible reasons for South Korea to move more closely to the U.S in an U.S-China context are 1) China decide to provide military aid to the North 2) China moves in to occupy the North.Otherwise SK's own interests (in national unification) can only be served by a good relationship with China

point 1) china decide to provide military aid to the north ??? China IS the principle arms supplier to the north.....and the rest of the world condemns this quite harshly......
2) why would china do that...??? there is absolutely no need to when every foreign policy decision of the north is predominantly dependent on chinese support.....

the bold part is something I can agree on.....
however....both the north and the south have independent foreign policies only in name in the current geostrategic situation ...and if I had to I would place my bet on South Korea going the Japan way and detaching from a U.S security umbrella at least in part rather than the north....if they so chose they could certainly involve india into their security grid to preserve their foreign policy independence .... I highly doubt they would choose to shift their hegemony from U.S to china ..because of ideological differences impossible to reconcile.....

Do you have any evidence showing China supplying any substantial amount of military equipment to the North in the last, say, 20 years? Even the U.S is not accusing China of doing that. North Korea has been making their own weapon ever since the collapse of the Soviet Union. China goes to great length to make sure the supply we give to the North Korea is enough for their survival and nothing more than that.

Why would China want to occupy the North Korea? North Korea has a huge stockpile of biological/chemical/maybe nuclear weapons. In case of a serious regime crisis in the North, China will have to go in and secure those weapons. And of course to prevent millions of refugees swarming to Northeastern China. China will probably want to install a puppet government and withdraw quickly, but things don't always go according to the plan.

As for the future of South Korea's diplomatic allegiance, they will continue to seek a balance between the U.S and China in the foreseeable future. A few years ago it looked like SK is drifting away from the U.S and toward China, but the PRC-SK honeymoon eventually wore off and now they're swing back to U.S. As for India's role, the cornerstone of SK's diplomatic policy is its relationship with the North. Since India plays no role in this regard, SK's relationship with India will always be secondary to its relationship with countries that play a role, namely China and U.S and to a much less extend Russia.

Many in India, especially the indian Media, dream of India being in the role of the US, the global superpower. Too bad that they are just making a fool out of themselves.
Actually many like you think that you still control the world and can run over anyone with sheer influence. Time to open your eyes. US is our friend on equal basis. Their economic clout and their military is for their own self, not for us. So we as independent country don't care about other's whims in foreign policy.

We're not interesting in becoming a police of the globe and as long as our region including our rightful territories are under our administration and safe, we don't care who rules the world. The sub-continent is our only concern. Other than that, if at all you can rule world, go ahead by all means.

^^^ Tshering, he is not from US.

It really hurts your fake ego! You live in fool's paradise to think like that. Indian media never claim anything unusual like sitting on the moon within five years etc. lol

The Hindu : News / National : Defence ties will dominate Antony's Seoul visit

Defence cooperation between India and South Korea is poised to receive a major boost when Defence Minister A.K. Antony reaches Seoul on Thursday on a two-day visit.

This is the first visit by an Indian Defence Minister to South Korea at the invitation of his counterpart — Kim Tae-Young — and is part of India's “Look-East Policy.”

A range of issues, including defence cooperation for peace and stability in Asia-Pacific and bilateral cooperation in Research and Development for manufacture of military equipment, will figure during the discussion between Mr. Antony and South Korea's top leadership.

Mr. Antony, who left here on Wednesday night, is accompanied by a high-level delegation that includes Defence Secretary Pradeep Kumar, Vice Admiral R.K. Dhowan, Lt Gen. K.T. Parnaik, DRDA Chief Controller C.K. Prahlada, and Sundaram Krishna, Special Adviser to the Defence Minister. The delegation will visit some defence establishments, says an official release.

The visit is a follow-up on the declaration issued by both countries during President Lee Myung-bak's state visit to New Delhi in January this year, when it was decided to elevate bilateral relationship to a ‘strategic partnership'.

The foundation for India-South Korea defence relations was laid in 2005, when the two countries signed a Memorandum of Understanding in Defence, Industry and Logistics. Another MoU for cooperation between their Coast Guards was signed in March 2006.

A landmark deal could have been the T-50 Golden Eagle trainer instead of buying BAE Hawks. The first batch itself was so troublesome. T-50GE would have been a good starting point for defence ties with South Korea.
