Defence Minister A.K. Antony on Friday asked the DRDO to prioritise the development of 5,000-km range ballistic missile while building a credible missile defence system for the country.

He also congratulated the Defence Research and Development Organisation for developing the interceptor missile allowing India to join an elite club of nations possessing such advance technology.

“DRDO must demonstrate the capability to develop missiles of the range of 5,000 km at the earliest. This is a challenge for the DRDO and I hope they will successfully meet this challenge at the earliest,” he said in New Delhi.

Mr. Antony was addressing a gathering of defence scientists who received the DRDO’s annual award for excelling in their respective areas.

“The interceptor missile defence programme has taken India into the elite club of nations that possess the capability to demonstrate this technology. DRDO should now concentrate on developing a credible ballistic missile defence for the country,” he added.

He also asked DRDO scientists to focus on the development of Mark II version of the Main Battle Tank (MBT) Arjun for the Indian Army and the Kaveri Engine.

“The development of MBT Arjun and Kaveri Engine has been hit by delays. Development of MBT Arjun is a major milestone. But Mark II is another area of challenge. That challenge you have to meet,” he told the gathering.

Mr. Antony also asked the DRDO and the Indian Air Force to ensure on schedule the induction of the indigenous Light Combat Aircraft Tejas into the force.

“After getting the Initial Operational Clearance (IOC) for the LCA Tejas, we are moving towards its Final Operational Clearance (FOC). I am sure DRDO and IAF will work together to deliver Tejas on schedule,” he said.

He added that the delays in the development of indigenous engine for the fighter jets had given more time for the induction of the LCA and the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) for the IAF.

India Ballastic Missile Defence System [Prithvi Air Defence (PAD) / Pradyumna Ballistic Missile Interceptor And Advanced Air Defence (AAD)/Ashwin Ballistic Missile Interceptor ] Are Next Big Thing
The New anti Ballastic Missiles under Development which can Intercept a Missile of Range 5000 km will be similiar to THAAD missile system of U.S.
Hope DRDO test Them and Deploy in short span of time Possible

Antony asked DRDO to speed up PAD , AAD and PDV tests.

Hey bro, little correction. The PAD will now be scraped infavour of PDV.Actually PAD was never meant to be a production system but a tech demostrator because it is liquid fueled and so can't be used as an effective interceptor as the the mobility and reaction will be problematic at best.
PAD:1.Max altitude 80km.
PDV:160km.
Top speed:mach5.5,mach7-8
liquid fueled solid fueled
ka band active radar seeker imaging infrared seeker.

Well said. PAD was mainly tech demonstrator. PD will take over the job of PAD and will go much higher altitude.

Does it mean another failed project? :P

Yes it is, whatever make you happy.

The PDV will give the Indian BMD a decisive edge over russian and chinese systems in terms of top speed and interception altitude. Both countries rely on long range sams for missile defence whose max altitude is 30km and speed mach4 which means it can only intercept short range BMs.I have seen many pakistanis saying that their missiles are super manuverable and can't be intercepted.War heads manuver by manuvering fins and accuators. But they deliberately forget that how can the war heads manuver over the atmosphere whem there is no air.So at exoatmospheric space the warheads remain more or less liner and that's why PDV will be pretty much effective, actually very effective against those pakistani bms specially when launched in salvos.Another claim is that they will launch many missiles at a time but again they forget that interceptors are much much cheaper and hence will be produced in far larger numbers than their bms.So again it is a ridiculous rather childis claim.
Regards....

its like agni-II and agni-II prime.it doesnt mean that we are making an improved version the 1st one failed well normal bashing I guess

No mate.Agni 2 and Agni 2prime both are developped for operational service as Agni 2 is already operational with the strategic forces command in large numbers and are in kept ready to fire mode. But PAD was never meant to be operatiomal but to make the necessary expertice, production facilities and most of all validate the technology for PDV which will form the backbone of indian bmd.
By the way,you don't need to waste your time answering those trolls BRO.They are already scared.
REGARDS....

Right dude. If I am not mistaken with the test of PDV India will become the second country after US to destroy a ballistic missile in space. Now there are some confusion even regarding the time of the test. Suman Sharma reporting it will be early next year while ToI reported its September/October this year. We should wait. This will be the most important break through in our capability along with Agni-V.
