Another trial of nuke-tipped Agni V next month

Here are two pictures of Agni 5 .The first image was shown the day before the first test of A5.The missile is shown with a blue tipped RV.But the actual missile tested was the second one with black RV.

Now see the difference between the two missiles . The conical third stage ,area between the erector arms and the RV of two missiles looks entirely different. Your views ??

I may be wrong though,but i think 1st image is CGI and is a bit streched in the x-axis direction making its RV looks a little bit wide.There was only one news-channel reporting this image and if this image was real IMO,many leading and well-informed News-channel would have reported this image.

Agni-V Cannot have mach 24 Terminal velocity..Its not possible.

What you commoners say about it?

The stated Terminal velocity of Agni V is stated as Mach 24. That means upon re-entry into dense atmosphere the missile will be travelling at about 24000 KM/H.
The missile gets its initial velocity from Rocket Motors,and in Agni's case 3 of them in 3 stages.But the "Burnout time" is kept as short as possible to avoid detection or at least make it difficult,that means the three stages will be consumed much before the missile reaches its highest point or the apogee.
After that the missiles speed increases under Gravity.
The more height the missile gains,the more time it gets for a free-fall and the more it accelerates.
But the Apogee is a function of Missile's range.The longer the range,the higher the apogee,and thus Greater Re-entry speeds.
The Re-entry speed of USA's Minuteman ICBM is Mach 24 (same as Agni-V's claimed speed),but that missile rises to 1200 KM altitude before diving down towards target,and has a proportionate range of 13,000 KM.
Agni-V has a range of less than half of that and there is no way it can have such a high apogee and for that reason its not possible for Agni-V to have enough time in Free-fall outside Atmosphere to accelerate to Mach-24.
In fact there is no other IRBM in the world which claims to have Mach-24 Terminal Velocity except DRDO claiming about Agni-V
Even TridenII has a Terminal Velocity of mach 17.
Topol-M with 11,000 km range has Terminal speed of Mach-21.5 and thats slower than Agni-V's claimed speed of Mach-24

So i am at loss here about from where DRDO came up with a terminal Velocity claim of Mach-24 for their Agni-V missiles as its not possible according to Laws of Physics and no other Example in the world exists for a missile of same range or even greater range.

the terminal velocity is a resultant of the horizontal and vertical Speeds ! The height gained by Agni V is somewhere around 900KMs. Which is almost same (give or take 100KMs) as the height gained by missiles from Russia or US of ranges ~ 9-11K km.

As far as the horizontal speed is concerned, it is determined largely by the specific thrust of the fuel ( considering the weight to be same ). If the burnout rate and specific impulse is quite high initially it is possible to gain a large horizontal speed.

Also, the terminal speed will also largely be determined by the fuel burnt after the re-entry (whatever part of the fuel is left )
So, the terminal velocity claimed to be 24 Mach is absolutely possible.


The range comparison is hardly any measure of the possible terminal velocities ! Learn some physics maybe next time ! It would help in informed discussion !

It is quite plausible that the range could be much larger than advertised. When quoting the remaining figures, they probably overlooked the minor details.

Mach 24 can only be Justified in case of a Much greater range than 5000 Km
or a Lofted High High trajectory which is also a Hall mark of Crude Guidance system..or no ability to correct course post boost..

Think of Jericho III its reported range 2000-11000 KM and its high terminal velocity when used in an "intermediate role". Agni V's range is being played down on purpose.

That even i am not sure but I was just trying to explore the possibilites !

Actually it was because of the skewed parabola ( read the unusually large ) height gained by the missile that prompted china to assert that the actual Range is 8500KMs for Agni V.

But it would be prudent to consider the range to be 5500KMs only as advertised officially !
