PTI discovers its dead UC candidate
Police are investigating the mysterious case of a man who was found dead from the canal near New Campus Bridge yesterday.
The deceased has been identified as 40-year-old Mian Muhammad Akbar, a resident of Ichhra. Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf said the victim was its candidate for the general council seat in UC-84.
Some passersby spotted the body stuck in the bushes on one edge of the canal Tuesday morning and contacted the police. Cops said the ID card recovered from his pocket helped them identify the victim.
PTI leaders condemned the death last night at a news conference and demanded the government to bring the murderers to justice.
Police, however, brushed aside the claims and said the deceased was an electrician by profession and he had nothing to do with any political party. A few weeks ago, a PTI candidate was gunned down in Garhi Shahu. Police had described the murder of Chaudhry Abdul Ghaffar Gujjar as a result of “changing political loyalties”.
PTI leaders Mian Mahmood Rashid and Omar Sarfraz Cheema addressed a joint press conference in Lahore on Tuesday, shortly after the police named the body.
“The body recovered from the canal, today morning, has been identified. He was our candidate for general council seat in the local union council,” Rashid told reporters at the party office.
The PTI leaders also demanded deployment of paramilitary troops in Lahore to maintain peace ahead of by-elections and UC election polls. “We don’t trust the police.”
Blaming the ruling party for the ‘killing of PTI worker’, they said: “This is the murder of democracy but the PML-N cannot suppress the voices of the people.”
On the other hand, police sources say the electrician had been in a relationship with a woman for last 20 years.
“No, he was not contesting UC Polls. He was an electrician who used to work in the area. He had no affiliation with any political party,” the Garden Town SHO told The Nation. The investigators, he said, are working on different lines including family dispute to unearth the criminals behind this blind murder. The local police have registered a murder case against unidentified men on the complaint of Muhammad Aleem. The complaint told the police, “My nephew had been receiving life threats by unidentified men for the last couple of days. Apparently, he is killed over political rift.”
An investigator said the man was brutally tortured to death. “The body has severe head injuries and torture marks. It seemed that he was hit in the head with a blunt weapon,” the official said.
Police are investigating the killing with no arrest made yet.
Violence is likely to flare up in the near future across Punjab where Local Bodies elections are scheduled to be held by the end of this month, security experts and political pundits predict.
