ohhhh ... looks like a gun boat sinking a destroyer?

Yes , this is Komar-class missile boat , fired three Soviet-made Styx missiles on the ship .

This inaugurated a new era in the development of naval weapons and the formulation of naval strategy throughout the world.

these are the same gun boats india employed to take down 2 pakistani destroyers and severely damaging one more

Pakistan as offered the same OSA in 1968 by Russia based on Indian Admiral back then, Pakistan refused and India got them. The very same boats were then used to destroy half of PN in 1971 war. First use of Anti ship missile Anti surface missile in IN...

Fantastic. This was also only 4 months after the devastating defeat of 1967. I'm sure this helped morale by quite a bit after that devastation, especially when Egypt was following what Eisenhower asked both countries to do and stand down. Except the Jews never did and took advantage of that to launch the dirtiest surprise attack ever. But this is a good example of the willingness to fight back and not only that, it showed how a destroyer could be sank relatively easy by a much smaller vessel equipped with the right weapons.

Do we know what the rough distance was between the Egyptian missile boats and the Israeli destroyer?

The ship sank 13.6 miles northwest of Port Said.
I don't know
That was first casualty by anti ship missile but first ship that sunk by missile was Italian Roma battleship by German Fritz missile
Not surface to surface missile .

So that's pretty much the distance since the Egyptian fast attack missile boats stayed in Port Said harbor to avoid detection because the Israelis were watching any moves by Egyptian vessels and would send aircraft to attack them. So they fired the 4 styks from the boats from within Port Said harbor with 3 hitting the ship (third one hit amidship causing the most damage and sinking the Eilat 2 minutes later) and the 4th missile was the only one that missed and landed in the water a little further away. One of many brilliant attacks from the Egyptian side but this one they couldn't deny or keep from the rest of the world finding out.

The CIA wrote a huge report on how crazy the Israelis went after trying to find a way to retaliate. Imagine wlad el kalb el m3arasseen after the death and destruction they caused a few months earlier and the land they stole from us to have the nerve to behave like they were violated?!?! lmao.
