Jinnah And Iqbal On Palestine : Yes, We Do Share A Bond With The Palestinians!

Little light is thrown upon or reflected on the views of the towering personalities who helped to shape the reality that came to be known as Pakistan, over the problem of Palestine. With the recent attack on the Freedom Flotilla by Israel which was bound to take aid for the people of Gaza and also had 3 Pakistanis amongst its passengers of 600, many people have wondered what relation does Pakistan share with Palestine?
In this regard, I decided to search over the thoughts of Jinnah, the Founder of our land and Iqbal, the Great Thinker over this conflict in the Middle East.

From Roedad Khan ‘Op-ed: So many questions: so few answers’:

[]Daily Times - Site Edition [Printer Friendly Version]

“On May 25, 1945, Mr. Jinnah declared:

“If Britain goes back even on the plighted word of hers, which is the barest justice done to the Arabs, it will be against the deepest sentiments and views of the Muslims of the world and it will constitute a breach of the solemn assurances given to the Musalmans of India whose sympathy and support were secured for the prosecution of the war on the basis of this promise… It is too dangerous a game to play and a bait to get the support… of the Jews for electioneering purposes, for it will certainly alienate and exasperate the Muslim world and lead to most disastrous consequences”.

On October 12, 1945, Mr Jinnah said at Quetta:

“Every man and woman of the Muslim world will die before Jewry seizes Jerusalem. I hope the Jews will not succeed in their nefarious designs and I wish Britain and America should keep their hand off and then I will see how the Jews conquer Jerusalem. The Jews, over half a million, have already been accommodated in Jerusalem against the wishes of the people. May I know which other country has accommodated them? If domination and exploitation are carried now, there will be no peace and end of wars”.
Addressing a mass meeting in Bombay on November 8, 1945, Mr Jinnah said:

“We Musalmans of India, are one with the Arab world on this issue. It is not a question of a National Home for Jews in Palestine. It is a question of Jews reconquering Palestine, which they had lost 2000 years ago, with the help of British bayonets and American money. I have no enmity against Jews. I know they were treated very badly in some parts of civilized Europe. But why should Palestine be dumped with such a large number of Jews? If Jews want to reconquer Palestine, let them face Arabs without British or American help”?

Referring to the efforts made by President Truman to put pressure on British government to allow 100,000 Jews into Palestine, Mr. Jinnah said, “here comes the President of a great country thinking entirely of Jewry and the interests of Jews. President Truman had the effrontery to put pressure on the British government to allow a million Jews into Palestine, while he has agreed, after a long period of vacillation, to allow only a 100 Indians to migrate to the United States of America”.

When a section of the audience shouted, ‘shame’, ‘shame’, Mr Jinnah turned around and exclaimed:

“It is not shame. It is monstrous and criminal. Why doesn’t President Truman take one million Jews into USA? The reason is that the Jews do not want a National Home in Palestine. What they want is to reconquer Palestine, which they lost 2000 years ago, with the help of British bayonets and American money”.

Mr Jinnah then declared that if the British government tried to violate the solemn pledge given to the Arabs in Palestine and allow the Jews into Palestine, as suggested by President Truman, there would be no peace in the Middle East and the whole Islamic world would revolt. The consequences would be disastrous.

“The Muslims of India would not remain as mere spectators. They would help the Arabs in Palestine by all possible means”.

The Palestinian cause continued to be championed by Pakistan after the emergence of the new state. In an interview with Duncan Hooper, Reuter’s correspondent, Mr. Jinnah warned that, if Palestine was partitioned:

“there was bound to be the gravest disaster and unprecedented conflict, not only between the Arabs and the Authority that would undertake to enforce the Partition plan, but the entire Muslim world will revolt… Pakistan will have no other course left but to give its fullest support to the Arabs”.

Muhammad Iqbal asked them a question, through the answer to it he well knew:

“If the Jew had a right to the soil of Palestine, Why can’t the Arab lay claim to Spain? No, British Imperialism has other aims. It’s no tale of citron, honey or dates.”

In poem after poem, Iqbal attacked the two Mandatories, Britain and France, for their ghastly deeds in Palestine and Syria.

In the 1930’s the situation in Palestine became increasingly alarming. The British adopted ruthlessly repressive measures to quell Arab opposition, and the result was a general revolt. When in July 1937 the Royal Commission under Lord Peel recommended partition and further Jewish immigration, the whole world of Islam was left aghast.

Miss Farquharson of the National League of England requested Muhammad Iqbal to express his views on these shocking recommendations. Writing to her on 20 July 1937, he said:

“We must not forget that Palestine does not belong to England. She is holding it under a mandate from the League of Nations, which Muslim Asia is now learning to regard as an Anglo-French institution invented for the purpose of dividing the territories of weaker Muslim peoples. Nor does Palestine belong to the Jews who abandoned it of their own free will long before its possession by the Arabs. Nor is Zionism a religious movement…. Indeed the impression given to the unprejudiced reader is that Zionism as a movement was deliberately created, not for the purpose of giving a National Home to the Jews but for the purpose of giving a home to British Imperialism on the Mediterranean littoral.

“The Report amounts, on the whole, to a sale under duress to the British of the Holy Places in the shape of the permanent mandate which the Commission has invented in order to cover their imperialist designs. The price of this sale is an amount of money to the Arabs plus an appeal to their generosity and a piece of land to the Jews. I do hope that British statesmen will abandon this policy of actual hostility to the Arabs and restore their country to them.”

Allama Muhammad Iqbal had insistently struck in his work this same note of mistrust of the presiding powers of the present-day world and prescribed this same remedy of self-reliance for the Muslim individual and the Muslim community. He hadn’t lived to see his dream of Pakistan come true or to watch the enemies of Islam producing the last bloody act of the tragedy in Kashmir and Palestine. But he had offered a word of advice, perhaps as farewell:

“To the Palestinian Arab

The flame that may enkindle a world conflagration, is yet alive in your soul.
I know,
Seek not redress from London or Geneva.

The jugular veins of the Frank are in the grip of the Jew I hear — A people’s chains snap when its

Ego grows and exults in proper self-expression.

In fact the call of these two great servants of Islam to the entire world of Islam derives directly from the Qur’an:

And he who reject the Taghut and believed in Allah,

hath grasped a firm handhold which will never break.

Only if we Muslims could learn to reject Taghut and hold fast to our faith in Allah, we would be on firm and safe ground.

Shall we then understand?
”

Allama Muhammad Iqbal passed away on 21 April 1938 but his call rang on in the Muslim soul.

On 15 October 1937, in the course of his presidential address to the All-India Muslim League Session at Lucknow, Muhammad Ali Jinnah said:

“May I now turn and refer to the question of Palestine? It has moved the Mussalmans all over India most deeply. The whole policy of the British Government has been a betrayal of the Arabs, from its very inception. Fullest advantage has been taken of their trusting nature. Great Britain has dishonoured her proclamation to the Arabs, which had guaran-teed them complete independence for the Arab homelands and the formation of an Arab Confederation under the stress of the Great War. After having utilized them, by giving them false promises, they installed themselves as the Mandatory Power with that infamous Balfour Declaration, which was obviously irreconcilable and incapable of simultaneous execution. Then, having pursued the policy to find a national home for the Jews, Great Britain now proposes to partition Palestine, and the Royal Commission’s recommendation completes the tragedy. If given effect to, it must necessarily lead to the complete ruination and destruction of every legitimate aspiration of the Arabs in their homeland — and now we are asked to-look at the realities! But who created this situation? It has been the handiwork of and brought about sedulously by the British statesmen … I am sure I am speaking not only of the Mussalmans of India but of the world; and all sections of thinking and fair-minded people will agree, when I say that Great Britain will be digging its grave if she fails to honour her original proclamation, promises and intentions — pre war and even post-war — which were so unequivocally expressed to the Arabs and the world at large. I find that a very tense feeling of excitement has been created and the British Government, out of sheer desperation, are resorting to repressive measures, and ruthlessly dealing with the public opinion of the Arabs in Palestine. The Muslims of India will stand solid and will help the Arabs in every way they can in the brave and just struggle that they are carrying on against all odds.”

On 26 December 1938, in his presidential address to the All-India Muslim League at Patna, Muhammad Ali Jinnah declared:

“I know how deeply Muslim feelings have been stirred over the issue of Palestine. I know Muslims will not shirk from any sacrifice if required to help the Arabs who are engaged in the fight for their national freedom. You know the Arabs have been treated shamelessly — men who fighting for the freedom of their country, have been described as gangsters, and subjected to all forms of repression. For defending their homelands, they are being put down at the point of the bayonet, and with the help of martial laws. But no nation, no people who are worth living as a nation, can achieve anything great without making great sacrifices, such as the Arabs of Palestine are making. All our sympathies are with those valiant martyrs who are fighting the battle of freedom against usurpers. They are being subjected to monstrous injustices which are being propped up by British Imperialism with the ulterior motire of placating the international Jewry which commands the money-bags…”

Quaid-i-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah died with a thorn in his heart.

For barely two weeks before he passed away on 11 September 1948, he said in his Eid-ul-Fitr message on 28th August 1948:

“My Eid message to our brother Muslim States is one of friendship and goodwill. We are all passing through perilous times. The drama of power politics that is being staged in Palestine … and Kashmir should serve as an eye opener to us. It is only by putting up a united front that we can make our voice felt in the counsels of the world.”

So from here, I conclude, that we as Muslims and Pakistanis have a bond with the Palestinians or any other Muslim nation in distress or under suppression that runs deep. When the founders of this country openly and unambigiously advocated for this cause and announced that the people of this young state, would in every case, support the Palestinians, why shouldn’t we? Having internal plagues inside your country does not permit one to be uncompassionate towards the plight of others, for even as humans : ‘Ashraf-ul-Makhlooqaat’ : it is our duty to stand by the those being choked and strangulated by the rope of barbarism.

There was no "Gaza Massacre". Hamas illegally employed civilians as armor to protect its rocket artillery which was firing upon Israeli civilians. Hamas had declared war three days before the Israeli effort to wipe out Hamas' rocket-launchers:

Hamas: 87 shells fired at Israeli targets in 24 hours

Published Thursday 25/12/2008 10:19

Gaza - Ma'an - The military wing affiliated to Hamas, Al-Qassam Brigades released a statement on Thursday morning briefing the group's military activities over the first twenty four hours of an operation they called "Oil Stain" which started Wednesday morning.

According to the statement, a total of 87 shells have been fired at Israeli targets bordering the Gaza Strip including 54 mortar shells, 31 homemade projectiles which Hamas calls "Qassam", and two Soviet-made Grad missiles.

Al-Qassa Brigades threatened to enlarge the "Oil Stain" to get more thousands of Israelis "under fire". The group asserted that its fighters are "far greater than surrendering to Israeli threats and that they became much more prepared to counter Israeli aggression and to defend themselves than in the past."

In a different regard, Hamas announced death of six of its activists on Tuesday and Wednesday in Israeli airstrikes.

When a Pakistani denounces Israel and sides with her enemies, is he or she not supporting a cause that seeks the deaths of millions of people and the enslavement of millions of others? Is it any wonder some will seek to create the slave society at home, rather than be content to support its creation and expansion abroad? Is it any wonder, then, that bombs will go off in Pakistan's marketplaces, shrines, and food relief queues?

You don't consider it your moral obligation to help teach them the truth, rather than perpetrate a lie by silence or deed?

I agree with you they act like terrorists.

But dear Salomon what do you think about this:

I could read in this Israeli French newspaper:
Iran: Qui a tué l'expert atomique ? Qui était cet expert ? | JSS News - Israël - Diplomatie - Géopolitique
On notera que Dagan est l’homme qui a proposé que des organisations comme Jundallah au Baloutchistan soient soutenues par l’Occident
i translate for you:
We will notice that Dagan is the one who asked the organisations like Jundallah in Balouchistan have to be supported by West
they add at the end of article that only gouvernement and regim of Iran say they are terrorist.
I am not in government and i am green, and big majority of Iranians whatever their political ideas, and i guess Pakistanis too
will say they are terrorists.

Stop supporting the terrorist kurds PKK , the terrorist Jundallah .
Before you complain about other being terrorists ;)

assalam alaikum

You r right brother we need to improve our communication we r lacking in it.

I wanna share an incident which was stated by Ahmad zaki yamani. ( former petolium minister of KSA). on a al jazerah tv once he was interview by well known anchor person ahmad mansoor he said he was meeting with king faisal during the 1967 suddenly someone came ( he mentioned the name but i dont remember ) and told them
the war is ended , he describek kind king faisal was upset and sad and suddenly he said make contact with gen. ayyoub ( president of pakistan) he offered me to place a squadarn of paf in saudia ( may be he wanted to get involved). Those kind of interviews and earlier one a year ago when yamani told the same anchor that despite saudies were in bad financial conditions in mid 80' used to help help pakistan with 200-300 USD millions every year. Replying to the anchor why saudia was helping pakistan he said pakistan is a strategic country and a friendly state.

These kind of interview by such high ranking ppl helped the image of pakistan and a normal arab knew the importance of our country but this all happend after the revolution of dish antenna culture and the channels like al jazeerah ( their cheif reporters have been very good in presenting the pakisani pov in most of the common topics ) and alarabiah ( i have a question mark on this channel but overall not bad for pakistan)

There is no efforst from our part unfortunately ( govt. level)

ALLAH says in Qur'an : The believers are but brothers, so make settlement between your brothers. And fear Allah that you may receive mercy. [49:10] :)

So My request is to leave the matter to ALLAH and move on as slaves of ALLAH and obey whatever He has commanded us :)

Here you go

You DON'T have the knowledge to talk about this issue, there were times when Quaid had some secular thoughts, he was once a pan nationalist indeed.. So even if he was NOT in support of Khilafat, we are ordered by our Prophet [S.A.W] to establish Khilafat :)

Simple! End of discussion, There's no authority above ALLAH and His Prophet [S.A.W] for Muslims.

Brother this is true that Palestinians have great expectation from Pakistan.... And this Expectation is not an ordinary expectation... This Expectation is because of a Hadith of Holy Prophet (SA) that relates to the last age i.e the age in which we are living to day...

All that is happening today in Jerusalem, will end with the return of Hazrat Isa/Jesus (as) and he defeating the Anti-Christ (Dajjal) , the False Messiah of Jews... this may take decades more (and Allah Knows best when this time will come), but this is sure that peace in Holy Land of Jerusalem will now only come when Imam Al Mahdi and Hazrat Isa (AS) will come and will destroy Anti-Christ..

The Holy Prophet (SA) said that at this time an army will come from the West to strenghthen the rule of Imam al Mahdi ..

"Abdullah ibn Al-Haarith ibn Juz Az-Zubaidee said, 'The Messenger of Allah (pbuh) said, "A people from the East will come and they will strengthen and enable the Mahdee — i.e. they will strengthen his rule.""

(Ibn Maajah)

At the West of Muslim World is Pakistan, whose people have great love for Palestinians.. Although our Leaders today are the worst creatures on Earth, but an Ordinary Pakistani loves Palestinians alot and have great Sympathy for them.... Even Qaud e Azam M A Jinnah loved Palestinians and never accepted this terrorist state of Israel.....

Secondly
, at that time (i.e the time of Destruction of Dajjal/AntiChrist), to destroy the terrorist State of Israel, an army will come from Khorasan that will Hoist its Black flags in Jerusalem after Destroying the Jewish army in Jerusalem, and nothing will be able to stop that army..

"Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) related that the Messenger of Allah (Peace and Blessings of Allah be upon him) said, 'Black flags will emerge from Khurasaan, and nothing will hold them back until they plant (their flags) in Eeliyaa (Jerusalem).' "

(At- Tirmidhee)

Khorasan, at the time of Holy Prophet (SA), was the Land that mainly comprised of todays whole of Afghanistan and some parts of Iran and Pakistan.... So it is the army from Afghanistan, Pakistan and Iran InshaAllah, that will Destroy this Terorist State of Israel...... Pakistan once again is the Part of this army Alhamdulillah....

Our Palestinian Brother and Sisters knows these Hadiths of our Holy Prophet (SA) and we Pakistanis should also be aware of these Hadiths and should understand that it is InshaALLAH the Destiny of us to Liberate the Holy Land of Jerusalem and Establish the true Religion of Ibraahim/Abraham (AS) i.e Islam.....

And Muslims brothers and sisters, please remember that this time is very near... It may not happen in this decade or in the next decade, but InshaAllah as the events are unfolding in Jerusalem and other parts of the Muslim World, I have no Doubts that the liberation of holy land of Jerusalem by Muslims will be done in this Islamic Century.. Right now its the year 1432 A.H according to Islamic Calendar.. Insha Allah the liberation of Holy land will be done within next 68 years (ALLAH KNOWS BEST)...

So Palestinians have an extra ordinary expectation form us, that we Pakistanis, Afghanis and Iranis, as a true muslims must understand...
