Activist Anna Hazare was on Tuesday detained by Delhi Police ahead of his scheduled fast at the Jai Prakash Narain Park in the city. Also detained were Arvind Kejriwal and other supporters.

The police action prompted protests against the government and the police. Reacting to the Delhi Police action, former IPS officer and social activist Kiran Bedi said: "I have been saying that the Delhi Police is being given directions. He has been taken into preventive custody even when he has not broken any law. Emergency has revisited the country. This detention is unconstitutional and undemocratic."

Since early morning, a group of people had thronged an east Delhi apartment where Anna Hazare was staying to pledge their support ahead of his protest demanding a strong Lokpal.

The 74-year-old social activist, who is staying at Supreme Enclave, was planning to stage an indefinite fast at Jai Prakash Narain Park, near Feroj Shah Kotla Stadium, where prohibitory orders have been imposed.

Anna Hazare detained ahead of protest fast

In an early morning crackdown, anti-corruption crusader Anna Hazare and his close aides were detained by police after the Gandhian vowed to go ahead with his fast for a strong Lokpal and defy prohibitory orders at the venue of his agitation.

High drama was witnessed in Mayur Vihar area in east Delhi when police detained the 74-year-old Gandhian at about 7:30 am from an apartment about three hours before he was to sit on his agitation. A large number of supporters opposed the action and shouted slogans supporting him.

Home Secretary R K Singh said Mr. Hazare was detained because he said he intended to defy prohibitory orders and sit on fast at JP Park in central Delhi. Delhi Police had denied permission for his fast after he refused to abide by all the 22 conditions set by them for the agitation.

Mr. Hazare’s close aides Kiran Bedi and Arvind Kejriwal were detained outside Rajghat. Lawyer Shanti Bhushan was also picked up.

“We will move the Supreme Court,” Prashant Bhushan, lawyer and close associate of Mr. Hazare, said.

Describing his detention by police as the beginning of the “second freedom struggle”, Mr. Hazare asked people to participate in a “jail bharo” agitation.

“My dear countrymen, second freedom struggle has begun and now I have also been arrested. But will this movement be stopped by my arrest. No not at all. Don’t let it happen,” Mr. Hazare said in a pre-recorded message.

Anna fasts in police detention

Anna Hazare today launched a fast in police custody soon after he was detained for sticking to his plan to defy prohibitory orders and stage a protest against corruption here.

The Hazare Team said the Gandhian was on fast and was not even taking water after he was taken to a police facility in north Delhi.

“He is on fast. He is not even taking water,” a spokesperson for the Hazare Team said

Police had made elaborate arrangements and stationed several buses and trucks in Mayur Vihar, Rajghat and other places to ferry Mr. Hazare’s supporters.

"Not surprised"

Senior BJP leader L K Advani said he was not surprised at the detention of Hazare and charged the government with looking for scapegoats and stopping peaceful protests instead of fighting corruption.

“I am not surprised at this development. This is the direction in which this government is moving. Instead of dealing with the problem of corruption and owning responsibility it is trying to find scapegoats and stopping peaceful protests,” Mr. Advani said.

Flaying the police move, Ms. Bedi said, “Emergency has revisited the country. This detention is undemocratic and unconstitutional.”

Around 500 supporters were with Anna at the time of his detention.

According to sources, senior police officials, including DCP (Crime) Ashok Chand, met with Hazare this morning at the east Delhi apartment where he was staying in a bid to convince him to not go ahead with his planned protest defying prohibitory orders at JP Park.

However, Mr. Hazare turn down the request following which he was detained.

“We have detained him as he did not budge from his position of defying prohibitory orders,” police official said.

Chanting ‘Bharat Mata ki jai’ and ‘Vande Matram,’ supporters created hurdles in the way of the police which were trying to take him to a nearby police station.

Mr. Hazare said, “Time has come my countrymen when there should be no place left in jails in India to accommodate any more persons,” he said while asking people to maintain peace.

“I once again request my fellow countrymen that peace should be maintained and there must be no violence...Crores of people have joined this movement and second line of leaders are standing to lead this movement,” he said.

After Prime Minister Manmohan Singh slammed him for resorting to fast as a protest when Parliament was seized of the Lokpal bill, the Gandhian had said yesterday that he will go to J P park despite Delhi Police imposing prohibitory orders.

Delhi Police spokesperson Rajan Bhagat had said that prohibitory orders under Section 144 CrPC has been imposed in some areas of Daryaganj and IP police stations, which include Jai Prakash Narain Park and Shaheed Park.

Mr. Hazare had earlier accused the Prime Minister of “speaking” the language of his ministerial colleague Kapil Sibal, saying the Lokpal bill was before Parliament which will take the call.

The most corrupt and impotent government we ever have in the history of India. look at this

SC stays bail granted to Hasan Ali Khan:
Just in: The Supreme Court has stayed the release of Hasan Ali Khan on bail
granted by the Bombay High Court on Friday.

Khan, who is India's biggest tax offender, arrested in March for his alleged involvement in multi-crore money laundering scam, was granted bail by the HC which observed that there is nothing in the Enforcement Directorate's case to show that the money amassed by him are proceeds of crime.

Justice A M Thipsay granted bail to 53-year-old Khan on a surety of Rs. 5 lakh.

this section is not for such threads Sir..what has happened to you?

Buddy, This thread is for members and can't fit into India defence/world affair. I checked previous posts of Anna Hazare and found they were posted in Members section. If this is wrong thread then will request mods to move it to appropriate section.

@Indian members, Who do you guys think is gonna make next government in India? and when are the elections due?

When Mayawati imposed section 144 during rally of Congressi Bachha "Rahul Gandhi". There was lot of hue and cry from them. Now they are doing the same. It is similar to emergency, where we cant peacefully protest in "Democratic India". Earlier brutality in Baba Ramdev's fast and now Anna detained. We need a Jasmine revolution against corruption and congress in India.

If everything goes right (which currently is not) then elections will be held in 2013-14 and as the dates are too far so we cant predict now. But seeing current scenario, it will be hung assembly.

Men who support Congress, kindly atleast think/act now for the future of our comming generations. We do not need a forigen master to shepard us. We can be our own masters and as far as Rahul is considered he is playing dirty politics with the poor. Wake up INDIA.

Pardon my ignorance, but what do you mean by "if every thing goes right"? I believe India is too mature a democracy to let these kind of issues become a reason for early elections or anything unconstitutional.

If there is a move of no-confidence against the ruling govt and the opposition can prove that a majority is not in support of the UPA alliance (which would involve allies breaking out of the alliance) and the PM decides to dissolve the Lok Sabha, there can be unscheduled elections.

BUT I HOPE THATS NOT GOING TO HAPPEN, THE ENTIRE UPA TEAM IS COMPOSED OF CORRUPT PARTIES, WHO WISH TO EXPLOIT THE POOR AND THE FARMERS AND THE EVERYONE ELSE. SO THEY WILL STAND UNITED TO MAKE SURE THEY LOOT DURING THE NEXT 2 YEARS TOO.
