Lead Ship INS Talwar in the Talwar Class Stealth Frigates Series
MUMBAI: Anil Ambani-led Reliance Group is set to sign an agreement with Russian United Shipbuilding Company at Moscow on Thursday for manufacturing Rs 30,000 crore worth of four frigates for the Indian Navy, people close to the development told ET.

These four 'Talwar Class' Frontline warships will be built at Reliance Group's recently acquired Pipavav shipyard in Gujarat.

The deal, which coincides with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Russia, involves building of warships in India and an arrangement for refitting and modernising all Indian Navy surface ships of Russian origin at Pipavav shipyard.

The total potential of the deal is Rs 60,000 crore over the next ten years, a person in the know said.
India currently has 35 Russian and Soviet-made surface ships deployed by the navy.

Reliance Group's Reliance Infrastructure recently concluded an open offer for Pipavav Defence & Offshore Engineering Co, which took the company's shareholding in the latter to 35%.

Reliance Infrastructure said recently that it plans to make its recent acquisition Pipavav Defence & Offshore exit corporate debt restructuring. Reliance Infrastructure acquired 18% in the company from the promoters for Rs 819 crore, making its foray into the defence sector.

The company will be renamed Reliance Defence and Engineering in January 2016.

Actually it's a bit strange.. You know the Talwars at Russian yards are in advance stage ( the last4) implying induction could be done in say 24-48 months..
So awarding pipavav do all that is a waste actually since its just 4 anyway..

We should use what's better for IN.. If induction timeframe is the key then get it from Russia directly

If we can afford 6-10 years then fine make at pipavav

Indeed, the main selling point of these Talwars was speed- bridging the gap for the IN until the P-17As come into service from 2022. Perhaps there will be 3 Talwars built in Pipav and 1 taken from Yantar already under production. I'm not sure Pipav can produce their first Talwar before 2020.

Let's wait until more details come out, there has to be more to this...

+ wasn't it said the Russians had tied this sale to the leasing of the SSNs so this means the SSN lease/sale is on also?

Well lease of another SSN is happening.. The time of signing is the issue.. Russia. Forum folks says one SSN is earmarked already.. Probably kashalot if working or if its just a hull then irbis..
Another thread quoting rbth which I posted talked about 2 upgraded kilos 636 also under discussion.. I believe 4 are there under construction.. One for Russia one for Vietnam and two I think prolly for us to buy

2 Kilos addtional Kilos in addtion to the 6 addtional Scorpenes? I think this is a bit overly optimisitc, be happy with the follow-on Scorpenes ;)

+ The cruicial deal that NEEDS to be signed this trip is for the 197 Ka-226T

It is the private sector's biggest ever warship building project, so Govt had strictly instructed Russians that the order would only be placed through the Make in India route, but Russians were given the flexibility to choose an Indian partner for the project. Choosing Pipavav makes sense as it has India's largest shipbuilding facility.

Looks like Dassault too might be offered similar flexibility.
But seriously if GoI wants Make in India to succeed, it should delink from its conventional practice of favoring state run corporations and allow private capital and venture.
Welcome move surely!

Damm i was thinking 3 Billion $+ is too high for these 4 frigate and now this article has come up with 4.5 Billion $ for 4 frigates..."Its looks like media too has its own share of financial illitrates "...

Reliance Defence, Russia’s United Shipbuilding sign Rs 66,000 cr strategic pact | The Indian Express
Reliance Defence has entered into a strategic partnership agreement with Russia’s largest shipbuilder, United Shipbuilding Corporation (USC) and Rosoboronexport with an aim to get $10 billion worth of business in manufacturing, refitting and modernisation of surface vessels for the Indian Navy. According to sources, the agreement has a time horizon of 15 years and focuses on modernisation and refitment of all Russian origin surface warships of the Indian Navy at Reliance’s newly acquired facility in Pipavav. The proposal is one of the many points on agenda during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Moscow visit.

India's Reliance Defence today announced that it has decided to work with Russia's AlmazAntey on the entire range of air defense missile and radar systems required by the Indian armed forces.

In a statement issued from Moscow and New Delhi, industrialist Anil Ambani's Reliance Defence said the two sides identified the air defense missile systems, including the TOR-1M missile program, radars and automated control systems as areas of partnership.

The joint projects would be explored within the 'Make in India' construct and the Indian government's defense offset policy.

In talks today, the two sides looked at the possibility of joint implementation of modernization, repair and deep overhauls of 'AlmazAntey' systems already in service with the Indian armed forces.

They also discussed Research and Development cooperation for developing new products in the defense sector, the statement said.

"Our proposed partnership will constitute an important milestone in the strategic relationship between the two countries," Reliance Group chairman Anil Ambani, who is in Moscow in connection with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's summit meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin, said.

The two leaders will also be attending a joint business leaders meet in which Ambani and heads of other Indian companies would attend.

"Working with Reliance Defence will help us develop new directions for both companies to address future requirements of the Indian armed forces," AlmazAntey's Vice Chairman V. F. Medovnikov said.

Only last week, India's Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) had, ahead of Modi's Moscow vist, approved the procurement of the S-400 air defense missile systems, which could create business opportunity of about $6 billion (Rs.40,000 crore).
