Europe can no longer completely rely on its longstanding British and US allies, Angela Merkel has warned – saying the EU must now be prepared to “take its fate into its own hands”.

Speaking after bruising meetings of Nato and the G7 group of wealthy nations last week, the German chancellor suggested the postwar western alliance had been badly undermined by the UK’s Brexit vote and Donald Trump’s election as US president.

“The times in which we could completely depend on others are, to a certain extent, over,” she told an election rally in Munich on Sunday. “I’ve experienced that in the last few days. We Europeans truly have to take our fate into our own hands.”

Donald Trump hits back at Angela Merkel with ominous warning for Germany
In a tweet, the US President said America had a "massive trade deficit with Germany" and warned: "This will change."

We have a MASSIVE trade deficit with Germany, plus they pay FAR LESS than they should on NATO & military. Very bad for U.S. This will change

Speaking at a campaign event held in a Bavarian beer tent, the German Chancellor emphasised the need for friendly relations with the US, Britain and Russia, but added: “We Europeans must really take our destiny into our own hands.”

Ms Merkel said that as the traditional western alliance is threatened by the new US presidency and Brexit, “the times in which we can fully count on others are somewhat over".

Her comments came after Mr Trump said he needed more time to decide if the US would continue backing the Paris climate deal, which has frustrated European diplomats.
He said the US President and his administration "chatter too much" and could give critical information to Russia.

He added: “This is a dangerous situation. It cannot continue as it is. This endangers the information exchange and can be dangerous for both sides."

So, if you stop relying on US and Britain that means that you are going to modernize your army and beef up the ranks. Which means you are going to spend more and cross the %2 threshold.

Problem solved for both sides.

Or create a single EU Army in which case 2% will suffice.

US, England no longer reliable partners for EU: Merkel

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has warned members of the European Union (EU) that they should no longer count on the United States and Britain as reliable partners, saying that the continental bloc "must take its fate into its own hands.”
Merkel said Sunday that the EU is faced with an alliance in West divided by presidency of Donald Trump in the US and Britain’s decision to leave the EU, adding that a recent summit of seven wealthy nations, known as G7, in Belgium, proved that EU’s intimate bonds with the two countries were no longer tenable.
“The times in which we could completely depend on others are on the way out. I've experienced that in the last few days," Merkel said while addressing an election rally in Munich, southern Germany.
She said Germany and France, as the two dominant forces in the EU, have to seek broader relations to compensate for the lack of commitment shown by the US and Britain.
"We Europeans truly have to take our fate into our own hands,” Merkel said, adding, "we have to fight for our own destiny”.

America is losing its leadership position. Trump is running America like a soap opera.

. . . .
I hope so. It's time the American taxpayer stopped having to pay for rich European's defense.

But what about climate change? As the biggest polluter does america has no responsibility to cull it. Trump calls climate change a Chinese ploy. What kind of a president do you have?

Americans have bad habit of wasting resources. That's the reason no matter what other contribute they never take it sufficient. On the other hand, German are known for their efficiency. I am sure Germans, along with rest of the Europe can use the available resources far more efficiently.
