ANGELA MERKEL: EU CANNOT COMPLETELY RELY ON US AND BRITAIN ANY MORE - GUARDIAN

. .
Instead of just talking, Trump should close US bases in Germany and bring US troops back.

. .
Greece and Turkey are both NATO members....a conflict between them are near to zero.

I mean even the invasion of Cyprus didn't trigger a war between Greece and Turkey.
Just listen to the debates in Western Europe. An EU army is seen as the first step of dissolving Nato, getting rid of US influence to some extent. This is the reason why even some far left parties support the idea of European Armed Forces.

Time has changed. Today, an intervention like we did in Cyprus would easily evolve into a full scale war between Greece/Cyprus and Turkey. They are EU and Euro states. Western Europeans would support them with hardware, intel, money, diplomatically etc.

Remember, the Greek and Cypriot states collapsed after our intervention in Cyprus. There is no way that Paris and Berlin are going to let this happen again. They've invested hundreds of billions of Euro in Greece.

Thé good thing is that they know Turkey very well. They are aware of the fact that we will intervene to protect our interests regardless of devastating consequences for the Euros.

This is why they probably will try to include us. Personally, I'm against any kind of participation in this project.

.
The unelected oligarchs who run the EU would beg to differ, as would Macron and Merkel etc.
Merkel keeps German interest sacred to her heart as most of the leaders do but she is not up for confrontation with Russia since business deals with between the two will benefit both especially Germany since it needs to fullful its growing energy demands especially when it is closing down the coal based powerplants.

American presidents have tried and failed for decades now to get a lot of the NATO members to pony up and contribute a full 2% of their GDP. Obama was trying till his last NATO summit, and failed.

Trump might just be the guy who affects positive change for the American taxpayer and gets them to finally pay up.

I find his blusterous style quite refreshing (and entertaining). They're not going to bully him, they tried, got a scolding, and now the EU is (hopefully) about to be bitch slapped by Trump who pulls out of the 2015 Paris accord.

1) The target is meant to be achieved in 2024. So Trump is lying.
2) The 2% does not go to the USA or but is meant to be spent on each countries own defence forces
3) If a moron for a President wants to to renege on an agreement already signed by the previous US President, signed by 197 of the worlds nations to prevent a Global series of disasters, supported by 99.9% of worlds leading scientists and Nobel Prize winners because he believes in fairies,
This does not lead to a "bitch slapping" of the EU as you put it, but an a-rse effing of the poorest and most vulnerable people of Earth including the Indians.

He's probably going to be around till 24 and wants to seal the deal by then.

What part of this makes him a "liar" ?

I know. I didn't say otherwise.

meh, what are you worried about, that there'll be no New Zealand, Mauritius or Miami in a decade ? Those are all Al Gore's lies.

If he pulls out, and we don't know if he will, never sure with Trump, it will be a tremendous slap to the EU hoaxers and will benefit countries such as India, China and many of the worlds poorest countries who are being burdened with global regulations and taxes (in the future).

It'll be the most epic thing ever if he does pull out, fingers crossed he does.

Europe can no longer completely rely on its longstanding British and US allies, Angela Merkel has warned – saying the EU must now be prepared to “take its fate into its own hands”.

Speaking after bruising meetings of Nato and the G7 group of wealthy nations last week, the German chancellor suggested the postwar western alliance had been badly undermined by the UK’s Brexit vote and Donald Trump’s election as US president.

“The times in which we could completely depend on others are, to a certain extent, over,” she told an election rally in Munich on Sunday. “I’ve experienced that in the last few days. We Europeans truly have to take our fate into our own hands.”

They first need to increase size of their Armed Force. They in the past have massively reduced Armed Forces size so better increase budget and increase size

I guess the side effects of Donald Trump will ensure both Europe and USA are divided and weak. Happy time for Russia and China i guess.

I hope so. It's time the American taxpayer stopped having to pay for rich European's defense.
Lol, of course, we should not forget, that we are paying our share on the US bases in Germany, too...and this bases are relevant for your diverse operations, not ours. Would be interesting to know, how much lives of US soldiers were saved alone in Landstuhl. If you want to abandoned, do it. If i have it right in mind, the most garrisions in Germany were logistic units and not combat troops, therefore...do it. :enjoy:

In this case, only nations with no ongoing military conflicts will be allowed to join this club. That's why Georgia and Ukraine aren't members of Nato. Though I'm not really sure about this. However, if Greece and Cyprus become part of this new European military organisation, Brussels will have to deal with Russia and a pro-UK Turkey on its Eastern and Southeastern flanks.

You are talking about this matter, as if an European army automaticially means conflict and we would start an invasion of the British isles?
Of course, the French will take over the leadership, with the exception of the British, they have the most powerful European forces, but I think that doesn`t mean that they want to cross the canal by force if they can do it by taxi.:P
Even that the Greeks and Turks started to shoot each other, I cannot imagine. Sure, you play your games down there and to judge the situation properly, I'm too far from the shot, but anyway, slightly too far-fetched.

In this case, only nations with no ongoing military conflicts will be allowed to join this club.
What would be the reason, why Turkey wouldn`t not participate in such an army, apart from the fact that Turkey is not a member of the European Union.

This will certainly be a fundamental decision, the decision for a European army. If it were actually set up, this would almost certainly mean a departure from several states from the Nato, and if not, at least a loss of meaning of the Nato in these states.
I also don`t think that many Eastern European states would participate in it, that they would rather put their safety in the hands of the Americans and I think, they do just the right thing in such a case.

With a European army, however, there will certainly be no competition with the US forces. We will surely not raise the 2% and even less will move 10 aircraft carriers from us somewhere.
In the eyes of many European politicians, such an army will tend to save the pretext of saving even more money. Surely a lot more equipment will be procured, which is also logical, if it eg. the Rafale for all air forces, it will lower the unit price, which will result in a few more airplanes, but it will not be the big throw.

Therefore, if the European states want a strong alliance, they will want to stay in the NATO, because of the US (and where the Turkey is already a member) and even once meet the 2%. If not, they make their own store, but not with the aim to build a strong alliance, but to save money. And for that they don`t need the Turkey.
