Well, it depends really. We already have a defense pact with China.

And I have little doubt that the future is bright for PLA-BA relations. And for the time being, that'll do.

But then don't forget, there is Uncle Sam We must balance our relationship with both China and the USA, since both are extremely important partners for Bangladesh.

A defense pact with Pakistan? Against what? Can't say really. However, Pakistan is a strong and important ally for China. A love triangle

The question is whether Pakistan needs Bangladesh as strategic military partner.
-Yes they may need us for defence business, but not sure about whether they would need us for having any same geo-political objective right now.

Another question is whether BD needs any such alliance with any country.
-May be not right now.

An economically stronger BD would need military alliance to protect her from super India. May be after 10 years. Just think why India needs power, why India needs to send rocket at the skies even after having poverty. So we also need according to our ability and necessity.

Threat may come suddenly. So making new alliance or some kind of treaty will be our future need, and in that case for having common political and economical threat or as brother PK should be the top precedence in making our alliance along with China. Think that..... if some day PK will share its nuke with us!

Why do you worry about India? BD govt and people do not worry. If wanted to capture BD land than we have had done it in 1971 itself. If we want it now, nothing can stop us. Also a military alliance with Pakistan is like talking about military alliance between North and South Korea. BD govt is still asking for apologize! Above all India-BD has excellent relation.

Furthermore, by having a defence pact what will bangladesh achieve? Pakistan already has growing problems back home, their military is overstretched. Bangladesh on the other hand is trying to modernise itself. Both countries have different agendas. And the economies of the two countries are very small to support the military properly. The only common ground is india. However, india is way ahead of us in terms of military. We should both have defence pact with china instead with each other.

@ Our army or defence is being build up largely with the help of Pakistan and China. And there is no any secrecy on it. India also knows it. But once we start making a formal defence pact Pakistan we will become a target of India. We have to first hold the thrust at the first stand than we can go for that. We are still in the process of building and once it is complete difinitely we have to go for that. But presently in the current world senerio these sorts of defence pact is missing. We have to wait and observe for some more time. After that we can go for that for our survival and for independant entity. Once preparation for ground work is finish we can have pact. For making a pact non of the countries have to spend much more money on Defence. The existing defence budget will suffice. Only needs a central co-ordination.

@ Now, defence pact with China, it has a negative impact on Bangladesh. It is true that man behind the gun is China but once it is open USA may not like it. The relation between China and USA is not consistant. In that case we might lose our market on USA and UN Missions. But once the concept of regional security will prevail in the world arena definitely it will work. And soon Sri-Lanka and Myenmar might join also.

I strongly agree with this. We seriously need to monitor our border areas more effectively. I have no idea why our military isn't looking into this matter. Why are they wasting money on tanks? We have enough already (old ones being upgraded).

R&D costs money. And I don't think BD military has any experience operating UAVs. So, I'd question just what is it that they can contribute.

Perhaps we can initially buy some UAVs from the US (they make the best UAVs) or China to just get a hands on experience. Might help us in developing our own. I am sure the Americans would offer us some given our requirements for a UAV and the harsh environment of the BD-Indo terrain.

Monitoring the securing our border with India would undoubtedly be an extremely tough job. We should try our best to do that. And that should come with the right equipment.

Great idea! Pk has good experience with UAVs. Unfortunately Sheikh Hasina has personal grudge against Pakistanis, so we'll have to wait.

hmmm partially right Some members have a strong opinion of this hence why I put up the Poll.

But I’m not sure the two countries are ready at this stage to cooperate effectively together in this aspect. Whether it be more economically, militarily, socially, culturally etc.

India is a strong country and I have already outlined that they outnumber Pakistan/Bangladesh in almost everything.

Therefore It makes sense that A defence alliance serves as a strong deterrence /barrier against any aggression!!!

Pak should not be involved in any misadventures similarly I dread to think what would happen if India invades Pak over any serious terror issues etc i.e. (December 2001)

But peaceful solutions should always be played out with any issues being resolved through dialogue…

Hopefully there are sincere leaders in both countries that favour peace
