AMRAAM BVR Missiles Delivered to Pakistan

US delivers first batch of air-to-air missiles

By Shakeel Ahmed

ISLAMABAD—In continuation to the F-16 Induction Plan and after the recent delivery of Block-52 F-16 C/D aircraft, PAF last week received the first batch of Advance Medium Range Air to Air Missiles (AMRAAM) AIM-120 from USA.

According to PAF spokesman the induction of these Beyond Visual Range (BVR) missiles in the PAF inventory not only marks the achievement of another major milestone in PAF Developmental Plan, but also bolsters its defensive capabilities manifold. Additionally, this capability brings PAF at par with other modern Air Forces of the world in terms of sophistication of its air-to air arsenal.

Importantly, this is the first time PAF has inducted BVR missiles which will strengthen its Air Defence capability manifold.

Delivery of the remaining aircraft, weapons including AMRAAMs & other related equipment is progressing as per schedule, and is planned to complete by the end of this year, the spokesman said.

  • rocket motor utilizes a reduced smoke, hydroxyl terminated, polybutadiene propellant
  • the conically scanning seeker is able to track a low flying target against ground clutter.
(tests included a kill of a low flying drone at 1,000ft/MO.7 in a tail aspect look down/shoot down attack from 16,000ft)
  • seeker goes active very late in the terminal phase giving adversary reduced reaction time.
  • The relatively short range over which the active seeker is used minimises the victim's warning time and facilitates burn through of any of the victim's ECM which may be activated. This philosophy puts the target up against a sophisticated fighter borne fire control radar at those ranges where manoeuvre or jamming could affect the less capable missile radar seeker.
  • expensive! estimated cost 500,000 USD per unit.

Quo Vadis - AMRAAM?

Can someone shed light on the differences between AIM120C-5 and AIM120C-7 variant.

Every missile can be jammed, there is no invincibility...but modern versions are more resistant.....same is the case with chaffs and flares....Eventhough modern missile are very hard to decieve...yet it is possible....and AMRAAM is no exception

AIM-120C generation

A three-phase Pre-planned Product Improvement Program (P3I) has brought the AIM-120C missile version into inventory use. The AIM-120C-2 is programmable in the field and has ECCM improvements. In Phase 1, the AIM-120C-3, introduced in 1996, has clipped wings and fins to fit in the internal weapons bays of the F-22 Raptor. Moreover, the guidance unit is upgraded to WGU-44/B standard. Phase 2 includes the AIM-120C-4 (first delivered in 1999, with improved WDU-41/B warhead), AIM-120C-5 (introduced July 2000, with a slightly larger motor in the new WPU-16/B propulsion section and a new shorter WCU-28/B control section with compressed electronics and ECCM upgrades) and AIM-120C-6 (Target Detection Device). Phase 3 covers the AIM-120C-7, with improved ECCM with jamming detection, an upgraded seeker, and longer range. Training and development rounds are designated CATM-120C and JAIM-120C.
The C-7 features a new guidance section in the missile's front end that gives it an improved ability to detect, track and home in on current and emerging air threats, even when operating in an environment of severe electrical interference, said Col Dantzler.

Raytheon says the redesigned front end also creates about 15.2cm of space for future enhancements.

.
We must thank US for their support towards a better future, these missiles offer ample support against ROUGE states with airforces

A-Darter is a WVRAAM in league of AIM-9X and IRIS-T.

IMHO the next-generation T-Darter will be comparable to the AIM-120D.

.
In early 2006 the Pakistan Air Force (PAF) ordered 500 AIM-120 AMRAAM missiles as part of a $650 million F-16 ammunition deal to equip the PAF's F-16C/D Block 52+ and F-16A/B MLU fighters.

noooooo

let us not turn this one into a VS thread..

the indians would jump in to claim the russian tech to be better (at least till they get hands on US ones via MMRACA)

this will cause a battle once again!!

i hope you will agree with this....

i know that such comparisons are meant for constructive discussion and debate but . . . . .:hitwall:

;)
