India’s T-72 tanks are facing problems with its ammunition as it sometimes bursts in the barrel and 200 such cases have been reported making the Army wonder whether its troops will be “afraid” to fire even after seeing the enemy.

“It (the T-72 ammunition) used to burst in the barrel. If it bursts in the barrel, then the firer is afraid to fire his own gun, which is not a correct thing. If he is afraid to fire his own gun, then even if he sees the enemy he will not fire,” the Army has told a Parliamentary Standing Committee on Defence.

The Army informed the Government and the Parliamentary Committee that over a period of time, there have been 200 such accidents involving the ammunition and “it brings down the confidence of the firer, especially, with regard to tank ammunition.”

In terms of the numbers, the T-72 tanks are the backbone of the Indian armoured fleet and have undergone several upgrades since their induction to be able to fight effectively in the battlefield.

The Army is also “concerned” over the ammunition used by its artillery called Krashnapov, which has been imported from Russia, and has failed to hit targets in high altitude ranges such as Kargil.

“They were supposed to meet certain height and temperature requirement, and they said that it is not meant for such high altitude areas. Now, this ammunition has been shifted in the plain areas because it was not working there satisfactorily,” it said.

The Army said several meetings have been held with the vendors to resolve the issue but progress in this direction has been relatively slow.

Last year, former Army Chief Gen V K Singh had written a letter to the Prime Minister explaining to him the shortages of tank ammunition being faced by the force.

I guess this is welcome news to the trolls who were BS-ing in the Pakistan Army tanks section.

Get some education, its about the ammunition and nothing to do with the tanks.

The ammunition is 125mm shell produced by India Ordnance Factory. India produced four different type of 125mm shells, 3 of which are for T-72 tank. If the problem isn't with T-72 MBT, then it is with the Indian-produced shells the tank uses.

A tank unable to fire proper shells is a sitting duck and bull's eye target for enemy tanks. Doesn't matter if your tank is T-72 and enemy uses Sherman.

Now where are my indian friends who were claiming Indian Army having a very high standard and being professional?......so much for a professional army .....i thought you guys do trails for yearsssssssss

" T 72 is far Better Than Type 85 and Alzarrar" I can see that Clearly Now ! :nana: :nana: :nana:

It is about the ammunition... not the tank.

There have been some faults in some rounds, such things happen. But now since it has been found, the Army will pass it to the manufacturer and they will sort it out.

Case closed.

200 barrel bursts = no lives lost= no tanks lost = a single news!! ! i doubt it is a major concern in army !

Generally Ammunition bursts inside barrels take place due to residual heat inside the barrels after a shell is fired...
When a shell is fired, if the ignition of its propellant co-incides with the temparature of the residual heat inside the barrel...the round will automatically burst....
Its a certain case of some sort of fault in the ammunition itself.....mostly the chemical composition of the propellant........but that doesnt make the tank faulty.....!!
If you replace that faulty ammunition with an Israeli ammunition ( lets say) then the enemy will be in some serious trouble..!!
Case solved...T-72 is fit....its the ammo thats sick...!!

The TANKS must be firing over 10,000 of rounds in a year or so or maybe more.. Out of that 200 exploded.

This case is nor about the tanks nor the ammunition per se.. It is about the quality of production of OFB ! Every production line has some accuracy and precision. In this case it seems the precision is quite high from OFB but accuracy is quite low !

They need to revamp the production line to minimize the no of faulty ones !
