‘Americans to attack Fata if Musharraf steps down’

By Ashraf Mumtaz

LAHORE, April 6: President Pervez Musharraf thinks that if he steps down as head of state the United States will go for direct military attacks on tribal areas and will also take away Dr A. Q. Khan for interrogation.

Official sources told Dawn on Sunday that the president was also of the view that Gwadar port project would be adversely affected if he left the scene and consequently the country’s time-tested relations with China could suffer a setback.

Similarly, the president believes that in his absence no leader or party will be able to maintain cordial relations with the Muttahida Qaumi Movement.

In view of the likely negative fallout, the sources said, the president had no intention to quit the post to which he had been elected for five years.

Moreover, they claimed the president’s decision to stay in office was more in the ‘national interests’ than in his own.

The sources said it was President Musharraf who was keeping the United States away from Dr Khan.

They said the US had been seeking access to the nuclear scientist for interrogation but it was the president who resisted all pressures and kept Dr Khan in a safe custody at home.

It was also because of Pesident Musharraf’s strong personal links with US President George Bush, the sources claimed, that the US was not attacking tribal areas. However, they said, the situation would change if the president resigned.

The sources said the US and many other countries were opposed to the deep-sea Gwadar port project and they did not like to see it functional mainly because of China’s role in the project.

President Musharraf, the sources claimed, was determined to get the project completed without any foreign interference. In case Pakistan gave in to foreign pressures, its relations with China would be adversely affected.

The sources said the MQM had brought about a positive change in its outlook and role in national issues because of the behind-the-scenes role played by President Musharraf.

It was because of the president’s influence that the MQM was supporting the PPP in Sindh, they said, adding that no party or leader would have such relations with the MQM as the president.

The sources also said the president had been keeping a low profile for a few weeks under advice from his friends in the establishment.

They claimed that political developments were taking place in accordance with the president’s calculations and nothing ‘unexpected’ had happened so far.

According to sources the ‘worst’ was over and the situation will soon take a favourable turn for the president.

“Thus, there is no possibility of the president stepping down the demands or the wishes of his adversaries notwithstanding.”

So the US will automatically attack FATA if Musharaff leaves? The US is already attacking FATA from within Pakistan itself using hellfire missiles on predators. Why would they suddenly attack FATA directly just because one guy they like leaves?

And how on earth is his leaving going to wreck the Gawador project? What critical role does he play in Gawador--it's a port managed by Singapore and will cater to China and Central Asia. What does Musharaff have to do with it?

No leader can be bigger than a country, I guess Musharaf has been mis-quoted or if he says this then that is just to save his chair.

No way!

I come from haunts of coot and hern,
I make a sudden sally,
And sparkle out among the fern,
To bicker down a valley.
By thirty hills I hurry down,
Or slip between the ridges;
By twenty thorps, a little town,
And half a hundred bridges.
Till last by Philip's farm I flow
To join the brimming river;
For men may come and men may go,
But I go on forever.
I chatter over stony ways,
In little sharps and trebles,

Honestly man this guy Kamran Shafi does not deserve to be called a journalist. I mean he is so negative and always critizing the army.

Salim,

I like the poem. Who is the poet? Is there any more of it?

Back top the subject.

There is more pressure coming on GB from the democrats to neutralize the miscreants in FATA and afghanistan. With the coming election looming ahead, both the parties would want to position themselves stronger to win the election. Just to get the vote, they would go to extraordinary lengths and take strong measures in fata to please their vote bank. The american politicians would careless if hundreds of innocent people got killed in fata, as long as the voters got satisfied. They just want some kind of action. The nato needs at least another 25000 more troops on its side of the border, so that when the pak army takes an action, they can mop up the taliban on the run across the border. But they are not going to do it. The americans want to stay in afghanistan for the long term and it is not to their advantage to curtail the taliban or finish them off.

Pakistanis are again falling into the JIRGA trap. The taliban made clear of what they think of the jirgas---when they killed the whole of the jirga gathering lately. The taliban don't give a ra-t's as-s to what these jirgas do as long as they can call for a truce to give them enough time to escape.

Pakistanis need to be pro-active in their approach now. If the americans and nato does not want to do much, then pakistan must take it upon itself to take out the foreigners and clean up thier side of the border. The parliament must impose some kind of emergency laws regarding the foreigners who are caught in action against pakistani defence forces. They should be prosecuted and then hanged on fast track justice.

Pakistanis need to show more respect for their nation that they live in and for the flag---. We are in a war zone---our army and our frontier forces are in fulltime combat with armed insurgents. Some of the soldiers captured by the enemy are killed in the most inhumane way by the taliban. We need war times laws and imposition of the verdict.

Some of you may remember the early 70's when the palestinian liberation army would hijack all the passenger aircarft, but they never hijacked any russian planes---you know why---there is a rumour that the palestinians did hijack one plane and asked the release of some radicals in russia---russia agreed---the palestinians got their comrades back---in body bags---there bodies cut up in pieces---their genitalis cut off and shoved in their mouths and rec-tal orifice---never again was a russian plane touched.

Extra ordinary times need extra ordinary measures---we are lagging behind.

Mr. Musharraf is not quoted in the article above, rather it is a "source" that is being quoted.

For anyone who thinks Mr. Musharraf is irrelevant now, events do not give credibility to such thinking.:pakistan::pakistan::pakistan:

Completely agreed. Those who think that the era of MUsharraf is over and he should leave, are living in a fools paradise. He has faced some tough challenges during his time of rulling and made sure that pakistan does not get in the cross fire. The new government should work with a man like him for the betterment of pakistan and should not play dirty politics like the ones being played these days in Lahore and karachi.

^^^^My persona opinion is President Musharraf probably not last till the end of his Presidential term. Though I want him to, but I have a feeling he wont last. This new Parliament wont harm him, but their are forces acting against him. What the future holds we all shall see, lets just hope for the best.
