This is just horrible. Similar things are happening in California but California can always attract billions of dollars due to Silicon Valley but Chicago doesn't have a Silicon Valley equivalent. American politicians are distracting their people by diverting their attention to minor social issues instead of letting them focus on important matters like this. American institutions need to be strengthened, especially the police. The government needs to incentivize people to do what's most productive for the state and stop wasting money on money pits that don't provide net positive returns. Social programs are great but not everyone should be able to benefit from them. Certain criteria should be set for people to be able to benefit from social programs, for those that fail to meet these criteria shouldn't be able to benefit from these social programs.

Horrible? Nope. Messy? Absolutely! But like I said, there is a method to what outsiders perceive as madness. Lori Lightfoot is now out. Newsom will get his day of reckoning too. Only those who understand the difference in basic concepts of government as a servant to the people who determine how they wish to be governed, and government as an overbearing master answerable only to itself, will understand. Every country finds a balance that it finds works for its needs.

The United States is still considered a developed country its just that they didn't maintain their infrastructure. Now even developing countries are progressing fast including African countries. Sadly as Pakistanis we don't stand anywhere. We don't have that mentality. There is no passion for infrastructure development among politicians and people alike. If someone accidentally tries to build or has built a highway or a public transit system, there is no ownership. The people would protest, litter, and distort the infrastructure

I do not doubt the progress of China and other far eastern cities. They are probably longest in length. As far as I know New York is the largest if you count number of lines or number of subway stations that are there and also there are some that are not fully active

To each to their own I guess. Personally, I will always prefer economic prosperity and efficiency over freedom. Of course, this doesn't mean that I like a totalitarian system, I simply prefer the government to put greater emphasis on economic prosperity and efficiency over freedom. I advocate for a strong government but at the same time, I want the government to be as small as possible as large governments are inefficient. I hope this makes some sense.

They could do something even super-simple. Like cleaning trash off city streets/waterways, powerwashing government parks/building, planting grass/flowers, cleaning/painting subway stations, erasing graffiti. etc. Anything to make the city look better,

But no..why turn all these "takers" into "givers"?

Clearly, we can see a what a society based on that preference looks like, and one that is more aligned with my personal choice of preferring freedom over prosperity and efficiency looks like. That perhaps also explains where each of us is, not just geographically, but mentally as well.

Back on topic, a couple trillion will go a long way in fixing and improving US infrastructure to meets its needs well into the future, as linked above.

If I lived in a Western democracy for a significant period of time then I would have been even more radical in preferring efficiency over freedom. In addition, I have always been the kind of guy who values time greatly and I tend to observe the world at a macro level before even thinking about looking at it at a micro level. But I completely understand your point of view and I respect it. I wonder if you grew up in Zia's era. If yes, then it would explain your love for freedom. It is horrible in many places in America - and it isn’t horrible in many places. The past 20 years has had a massive cultural divide growing which had removed focus from more key issues and that polarization will only make things worse.

The problem is compounded due to ridiculous laws that amplify cost of materials. As an example - one 500m stretch of road in supposedly red “get it done” texas took $1.2 million to renovate - that is ridiculous by any standard unless you see the massive inefficiency and systemic rot settling in because every other law has to be satisfied. The problem with that is that taxes aren’t enough to cover all those ridiculous laws like they are in Europe and even they are killing their businesses and infrastructure slowly in places due to red tape.

Big government doesn’t always fix everything - and more importantly - the more “accommodating” you are to every other tom,dick(who isn’t one in any manner) and hari singh.. the more delays you will have in getting anything done.

In a way, corporate America quietly has set up through both left and right side lobbies for the whole concept of government by the people for the people to fail.

California has kids being given drag shows while Ohio and Iowa make sure raped women carry any pregnancy to term… America may actually need another civil war to get one system aligned again.
