Burnside Brewing will be releasing a very limited number of 1 litre swing-top bottles of their Kali-Ma Imperial Wheat Ale (8.6% ABV, 13.2 IBUs) next Tuesday at the brewery. The bottles are US$25 each and limited to 150 at the brewpub only. Silky wheat, fresh fruit, peppers, and spices all on Belgian yeast could make for a tremendous beer. Burnside Brewing has a great record of hitting the mark with their experimental beers, but if you're timid about shelling out for a 1 litre purchase, stop by and try it on draft purchase for a preview of what's in the bottle. The official press release says, "Burnside Brewing is excited to finally release the highly anticipated beer 'Kali-Ma' in 150 very limited 1ltr Magnum sized swing top bottles and on draft on Tuesday May 15th at their pub.

"Kali-Ma, is inspired by the Hindu goddess and her tribute in the movie Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. The name Kali comes from kāla, which means black, time, death, lord of death, Shiva. Kali-Ma the beer is an Imperial wheat ale or wheat wine made with toasted cardamom, fenugreek, and cumin spices added in addition to almost 400 pounds of apricot. Fermented with a Belgian ale yeast harvested from Upright Brewing. We then dry hop it with 8 pounds of scotch bonnet and native India dandicut peppers.

"Come worship "the black one" Kali as the ultimate reality or Brahman this Tuesday! [May 15, 2012].

Burnside Kali Ma, in addition to all Burnside Beer is unfiltered. This requires an increased time commitment, but pays dividends in the depth, character, and flavor profile of our offerings."

Following announcement by Burnside Brewing Company of releasing a beer in the name of a Hindu goddess, upset Hindus have urged Portland [Oregon, USA] based brewing company not to release its "Kali-Ma" beer proposed for May 15, calling it inappropriate.

In a statement, Rajan Zed, president of Universal Society of Hinduism said that inappropriate usage of Hindu goddess or concepts or symbols for commercial or other agenda was not okay as it hurt the devotees.

He stressed that goddess Kali was highly revered in Hinduism and she was meant to be worshipped in temples and not to be used in selling beer for mercantile greed.
Goddess Kali, who personifies might or divine energy, is widely worshipped in Hinduism. She is considered the goddess of time and change. Some Bengali poets described her as supreme goddess.

Dont they have a better name? I dont like the name to be honest... And inspiration taken from a good source, used for bad things is not right..

Is that available in India? I'd certainly love to quench my thirst with this while head banging to Dissection's Mahakali!
