WASHINGTON: The US capital is abuzz with rumours that after replacing its military commander, the Obama administration is also thinking of bringing in a new special envoy for Afghanistan and Pakistan.
Although the State Department insists that there will be no change in the diplomatic team, many in Washington believe that like Gen Stanley McChrystal, Ambassador Richard Holbrooke may also be asked to leave.
According to the Los Angeles Times, the prospects of Mr Holbrooke’s ouster were raised after the White House sidelined him during months of crucial talks with Afghan President Hamid Karzai.
But it was a suggestion from Senator John McCain, the former Republican presidential candidate, that strengthened such speculations.
