Islamabad—The US Defence Department has said that negotiations were on to deliver PC3 Orion to Pakistan.

A Pentagon spokesman said that the US provides defence equipment to Pakistan under the EDA programme.

He said that the US would soon deliver alternatives for the PC3 Orion aircraft, destroyed in a terrorists attack at PNS Mehran in May.Earlier, Defence Secretary Lt General Shahid Iqbal had told public accounts committee that due to the strain in Pakistan-US ties, the US was reluctant to deliver PC3 Orion to Pakistan.

Probably the Boeing P-8 Poseidon which has a multi-role capability to conduct anti-submarine warfare (ASW) and shipping interdiction and to engage in an electronic intelligence (ELINT) role. This will involve carrying torpedoes, depth charges, SLAM-ER anti-ship missiles, and other weapons.

The P-3C Orion is based on a 4 decades old platform.

India is getting the latest P-8I Poseidon based on the Boeing 737 being introduced shortly.

Here's my question,just because the P8I doesn't incorporate American datalinks or GPS navigation(remember these are measures that we do not use anyway,we have our own datalink channels and use Ground/Sea based radars for navigation)it's supposed to be a downgraded version?
It doesn't have anything to do with the plane's radar capabilities,weapons deployment or maritime seek-and-destroy features so why should it be considered downgraded?

Back on the topic on hand,perhaps they intend to hand over existing PC3 Orions from the American fleet for immediate deployment till new ones for Pakistan get built? Hard to conclude,the language is vague at best.

No, downgraded is the wrong terminology. The P-8I is a CUSTOMISED version of the standard P-8A for the USN. the reason the IN is going for a customised version is to overcome the lack of signing deals like LSA/CISMO so certain tech would be removed. The P-8I simply incorporates Indian/Israeli tech to fill the gaps that are created by US refusal to sell certain tech without these deals. The P-8I will be equally as capable as USN version just with Indian/Israeli tech and a MAD which USN won't have.

so it was also the old plan of Pakistan navy to get old p-3orion from USA stock

I mean how much airframe life will second Hand P-3C have , coz as far as i know most P3C with USN are between 25-35 yrs old , and US will begin inducting P8A in 2013 , it is unlikely that they will offer Pak 25 yr old versions , most likely u will get 30-32 yr old version which will anyway be retired from USN by 2015
As far as KC135 Tanker is concerned ,well these tankers are even older than P3C , some are as olsd as 48 yrs , being inducted in yr 1963 , what advantage will 40 yr old KC135 provide

Even India is looking at Airbus A400 and Boing KC135 replacement to complement mmrca winner
