After many years of working with HK people both in Shenzhen and in Hongkong, my impression is that

(1) majority of them have various degree of psychriatric problems due to high pressure of their life style, jobs and housing. One of many ways of releasing their frustration is shopping!!! They changed hanphone every 6 months or so and keep spending on many things and good food.

(2) they used to have superiority mentalilty when dealing with Mainland Chinese until the reality hits them with changes in Shenzhen's economic progress. The loss of this mental superiority is one of the causes of their frustration towards HK government leading to the riots in HK.

(3) Real cause of housing problem like high costs and limited spaces is capitalism practiced by ultra rich taycoon housing developers whose considerations are money profits rather than social responsibility. And failure of the local government to put socialism policy into creating affordable people's housing like the HDB of Singapore added salt to the wound.

Hong Kong people were treating purchase of apartment as a form of investment much like Mianland Chinese were. The yearly gained in house value was phenominal but unfortunately only the rich people are profited while the lower income groups sufferred decades later after 1997.

Allowing the housing tycoons to make fat profits may sound good for HK's economy but the lower income group and freshly out of college job seekers were increasingly find hard to buy affordable apartment with reasonable living space.

Unfortunately housing problem was a major cause for people's frustration. And this frustration was not addressed by the HK government, and the West and US saw the opportunity to incite the riots blaming the HK nad Central government. HK people were blindly follow the West's propaganda, as their education system were heavily infiltrated by the West's anti-China foreign government agancies and christian churches.

Goods news is that just last week, the central government people made a field survey on HK people's housing problem, and now HK government has just declared areas bordering Shenzhen will be developed with afforadable housing. Not too late for a 亡羊补牢。

Before 1980s or 1990s, a large number of Hongkong people were living in squaters and makeshift shelters much like any poor 3rd world countries today. Public housing to re-settle these people were urgent anf necessary partly to improve Hong Kong's image, and partly due to the need to acquire lands (occupied by squaters) for city development.

Public housing was not dismantled or stop after 1997, but due to the priority in developing profitable apartment, the building rate of public housing is going at snail's speed. A Hongkong resident complained to a central government official just last week that he wait for 12 years after apllying for a piblic housing, and yet he is still waiting.

It is sad that HK government need to be pushed by central government in Beijing to move forward their affordable public housing, but at least they are now planning to develop areas bordering Shenzhen for such purpose, which should ease the housing burden for lower income HK people.

Cantonese is a bastardized version of Guang Dong. It's called Bai Hua or Guangdong Hua. People in Guangdong can be literally be called Cantonese. My city is in Guang Dong, but I don't speak Cantonese.

Moreover, the lazy bureaucracy follows the principle of "Less works lead to fewer mistakes"; the constant obstruction in Legislature over the last 15 years. Mind that, not all so called "pro-establishment" politicians are pro-Beijing, in fact many of them are just serving the interest of the "land lords" here, including those ministers and councilors in the gov't. Also anti-intellectual of the mass who are easily swayed by news articles or even disinformation and side tracks like abandon schools area etc. I met several normal people who always oppose the gov't housing policies and believe the gov't didn't build any public housing in last 10 years due to disinformation. The freaking Weak gov't who didn't have the backbone and were afraid of the opposition and protests of the mass due to weak support from the people. The beneficial middle class and those HK natives who own lands, that only cares their own gains. The last goes to our "land lords" that have huge influence all over our Media and politicians, as you would see how many votes they had in our last CE election.

You guys are forgetting about Vancouver. Many HK'ers moved to Vancouver as well (especially who have some money and could buy property there). Now I'd choose Vancouver over gloomy UK anyday. These people would be even less likely to return.

HK is free but not democratic. If they are truly democratic and accountable, the government would have understand the concerns of the majority and expand the housing supply, instead of restricting land supply to keep property prices high whenever there are 'protests'. Those 'protests' against greater land supply don't represent the majority; they are just self-interest groups masquerading as the people's will.

Nah, democratic doesn't represent good government. The only different between democracy and other type of governments is that it is a government method that based on popularity. For Hongkong to failed to handle their housing problem is not because they're not democratic, but because they're incompetent.

That's why I think why Beijing should defend Carrie Lam. If she's not competent, then they should replace her with other administrator who is capable to handle Hongkong problem in 2019.
