All South Indians are not Madrasi

madras is the most famous city in southern india.. probably that's why people think anyone who speak southern language live in madras

ammaaa !!! bangalore is south indian proper. even if the saambar can't hold candles to even up north in andhra forget chennai. and don't get me started on that sh!tty palya you get everywhere in dakshin kannada..stuff worth committing suicide over.

People from Tamilanadu and current Andhrapradesh (w\o Telangana) used to call Madrasis.

Just Google Madras Presidency...you will get your answer....The day the Madras presidency was no more..the term Madrasi also no more...but hey...people in India or any other place are not well informed to know that!

that's right.. but we in Punjab don't call south Indians madrasi at all... its upto delhi you guys are known as madrassi but in Punjab we call you south indians

South Indians are called Madrasis because until 50 years ago most of them were Madrasis ( at least those who use to travel. Hyedrabadis never use to travel too far from Hyderabad, Nizam made sure of that ).

It is a label that struck with South Indians overtime.

Also a thing to be noted is that only people of old generation and only from some areas use the term Madrasi. I have not heard anyone using that term in North India, except in some historical reports about Shiv sena.


note to madrasis: all fair skinned people are not north Indians..

that's right.. but we in Punjab don't call south Indians madrasi at all... its upto delhi you guys are known as madrassi but in Punjab we call you south indians

South Indians are called South Indians in Delhi and UP too. Never heard Madrasi term used here.

During the british rule, most of the south was under an administrative region called the Madras Presidency, with it's capital at Madras (now Chennai), and was only re-organized in 1956, so thats probably where the name comes from.
