Chinese Type 056 Class Corvettes to Bolster Algerian Navy From 2022 - Reports


The Algerian Navy is reportedly scheduled to take delivery of is first of a new class of light corvette in 2022, with three Type 056 Class ships on order. The 1,500 ton corvettes are under construction by China’s Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding Group, the world’s leading shipbuilder for surface combat ships, and each deploys 12 launch cells for modern missiles. These include four launch cells for YJ-83 anti ship cruise missile and eight cells for HHQ-10 short range surface to air missiles, which are supplemented by two triple torpedo tubes for 324mm torpedoes. It remains uncertain which variant of the Type 056 is on order, with the Type 056A being a likely choice due to its advanced anti submarine warfare capabilities which can effectively complement existing ships in the Algerian Navy.

The order for the ships comes amid growing interest in Chinese weapons systems from Algeria and from the Navy in particular, and follows a prolific transfer of highly sophisticated CX-1 anti-ship cruise missiles in 2018. It also follows the sale of much heavier 3,000 ton Adhafer Class stealth corvettes which were developed specifically for the Algerian Navy and also built by the Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding Group. The ships were better armed and faster and were better suited for operations outside Algerian waters. More capable but costly than either of these were Russian Project 20380 Steregushchiy Class missile corvettes which were reportedly confirmed to have been ordered for the Algerian Navy in November 2020. The displace 2,,200 tons and are armed with significantly longer ranged missile systems for both air defence and offensive roles.
