MUMBAI: As India prepares to launch an unmanned mission to Mars in October-November this year; comes a prediction that this country could perhaps be among the nations which could construct a modular habitat on Mars with US leadership in the years ahead.

And this forecast which endorses India's space capability comes from none other than the second man who set foot on the moon on July 20, 1969, Buzz Aldrin.

The veteran moonwalker made this point while addressing the 'Humans to Mars' conference in Washington DC on Wednesday organized by Explore Mars.

According to him, apart from India, the other countries which could construct a modular habitat on the surface of the red planet include China, Japan, Europe and Russia. The habitat will be used by astronauts to work and stay when they arrive on the red planet.

Aldrin, who also launched his book published by National Geographic called: " Mission To Mars: My Vision For Space Exploration", has emphasized the need for launching a manned mission to the red planet by 2035 and maintaining US leadership in human spaceflight.

The book has been co-authored by veteran space journalist, Leonard David.

In a post-launch interview to space.com and Universe Today, he said he wants to see an US presidential commitment towards a continuous manned mission to the red planet.

He said that a human landing on Mars in 2035 is not without significance because it will be 66 years after the first moon landing - the same amount of time that passed between the flight of the Wright Brothers and the landing on moon by Armstrong and him. It may be recalled that Aldrin felt sidelined that the credit for the first man on moon has gone to Armstrong.

Thanks to PA, we are trying for a Pakistani habitat in Waziristan. Such grand strategic depth!

(Nonetheless congratulations to India)

Dude the Latest Indian Mars mission won't have any landings, it is only for studying the atmosphere of the red planet.

Where ever you see China you will see India been equated by the west and projecting India as anti china or a rival.

Just like Americans used to equate India and Pakistan during cold war era when India was in USSR camp.

India has its own path and its own strategies.

Our Lander/Rover will be tested in the next Chandrayan 2 mission, then we might proceed for a landing mission in Mars.

I want china and India on mars at the same time, facing each other from mere 300 meter distance.

I also want Pakistan to join us there and make MARSAkoram Highway.

I cant think anything for Bangladesh right now as to what they will do there or how they will reach there in the first place! Everyone is free to continue.

I think India's 2nd Mars mission will be on 2018,next window for Mars.we might see the landing then.human habitat on mars is still 2 decades away.first,we have to populate moon I think as some are saying moon will be the launch pad for future manned mars mission..

I don't see any Asian country going to land anything on Planet Mareekh anytime soon. It's just too expensive and complicated. Everyone is waiting for better technologies. Best way forward in space exploration is as many joint ventures as possible.

I agree with you, but India will take almost a decade to conduct landing mission in Mars. So it isn't happening anytime soon.

China is sending a rover to the moon this year with a nuclear power plant that can give it a 30-year lifespan. The only Mareekhi exploration China attempted was the joint venture with the Russians, which failed.

What I'm trying to say is that even China with its absolutely huge economy and resources is not thinking ambitious as Mareekhi exploration, therefore, maybe India with its 10th largest economy could also give priority to the moon and ignore the Planet Mareekh for now. I am sure this will help India significantly and also help other Asian nations.

People often forget that NASA is an American tool to project it's soft power designed during the Cold War. They're trying so hard to lure the Chinese into an expensive space race but so far it has failed miserably. However, I don't know why India has fallen so easily into their trap.
