In Mid of this year, In an event of L&T Defence at its facility at PMSC Coimbatore first glimpses of Next Generation Akash which will soon begin its developmental trials by mid of next year. Akash-NG sports radical new design minus four long tube ramjet inlet ducts which are seen in the older Akash1 and Akash-1S.

Learning from its expertise in the development of Indo-Israeli MR-SAM and LR-SAM air defense system, dual pulse solid propulsion and indigenous Active radar seeker which, backed by an Aesa Radar will be a leap of generation of the Search and Track technology currently used by the Akash1 and Akash-1S Air Defence system.

According to the newer information available, Akash-NG will sport a Canister system mounted on a Truck for easy mobility and each system will have Six missiles ready to fire at a moments notice. Will range of the missile has been claimed from 35 to 50 km it will be slotted in below Indo-Israeli MR-SAM Air Defence system in Indian Army and Indian Air force but unconfirmed reports also suggest that the missile will have a 55-60 range closer to MR-SAM Air Defence system and will be a cheaper alternative to the expensive which can be mass produced.

Akash-NG already has interest from several countries in the neighborhood and Vietnam and India have discussed export of the Akash-NG variant after Vietnam showed more interest in it then Akash1 variant in recent meets due to which India is yet to close a deal with Vietnam. India and Vietnam in the last few years explored the possible transfer of technology and local production of Akash1 variant, which could have become the first major export order for Indian air defense system which now will happen when Akash-NG is cleared for production.

Many state of Art systems would go into this which is there in MRSAM. This will be a highly cost effective system with vertical launch and high accuracy. One may say that this is a bit down graded version of MR SAM/ BARAK 8 at a fraction of the cost which one may have to spend on BARAK 8. Once its radar and seeker is upgraded, it will match BARAK 8. This is a cost effective solution of enemy cruise missiles, planes , drones etc. The big plus point is that it can move along the battle groups which is a core doctrine of Cold start.

Actually, this sort weapons are best because if you tries to add extra sophistication, it comes with a great cost attached to it. In these sort of weapons, you can achieve 70% to 80% of performance of the leading weapon of the class at 1/4th to 1/10th of cost so punch delivered per buck is very high. One example is latest version of Derby missile when Israel told that it can deliver 80% of the performance Meteor missile at a much lower cost. This makes the sense.

New Delhi, Dec 4: Buoyed by the success of Akash Surface to Air Missile (SAM), the DRDO is said to be working one the development of the highly advanced Akash-NG or Akash-Next Generation.


In June 2018, it was reported that the next-generation Akash-NG missile will be ready for user trials in the next two years. Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) Chairman and Managing Director S K Sharma had then said that the upgraded version will have a new radar and seeker.

Akash Surface to Air Missile (SAM)

Akash missiles are designed to be launched from static or mobile platforms such as battle tanks and wheeled trucks, providing flexible deployment. It can handle multiple targets and destroy manoeuvring targets, including unmanned aerial vehicles, fighter aircraft, cruise missiles and missiles launched from helicopters. Deployment of Aakash significantly improves defence capabilities from incoming air attacks.

Akash missile system is an indigenously developed supersonic short-range surface-to-air missile system with the capability to engage a wide variety of aerial threats like aircraft, helicopters and unmanned aerial vehicles up to a maximum range of 25-30 km and up to an altitude of 20 km. It is in operational service with the Indian Army and the Indian Air Force.

According to a report published in Maxima Vigilantie, the Akash-NG missile has a cylindrical body with four cropped delta fins at mid-body and four tail fins. Second stage air-breathing solid ramjet engine has been ditched in favor of lighter dual-pulse solid rocket motor. The new propulsion system will increase the range of the missile to 50km+. Akash-NG has six major components- radome, indigenous active RF seeker, RF/Laser proximity fuse, pre-fragmented warhead, electromechanical actuation, and dual-pulse rocket motor.

The Akash missile, which is in service now, is guided by a phased array fire control radar called 'Rajendra' which is termed as Battery Level Radar (BLR) with a tracking range of about 60 km.

Akash-NG will feature an AESA Multi-Function Radar(MFR). The Addition of MFR will afford the Akash missile system capabilities it never had before. MFR will combine functions (search, track and fire control) of three different radars in one single unit.

This new Akash NG will significantly bolster India's air defence system. India is currently working on a multi layered air defence system to tackle with the incoming aerial attack. India's purchase of S-400 triumf system from Russia was in line with this ongoing endeavour. India is already working on two-tier Ballistic Missile Defence (BMD) Program and has Aakash Missiles to take on aerial attacks. The S-400 Triumph missile defense system is a significant strategic upgrade in India's military hardware.

Defence and strategic matters expert Major General PK Sehgal earlier told OneIndia that India's air defence capabilities badly needed an upgrade.


"We did not have anything (in terms of air defence) between 400 kms and 25 kms. This is a system which can take on the enemy from 30 kms to 400m kms. Then you are also buying Israeli Barack 8 systems which has a range of 70 kms extendable upto 100 kms. So, you will have a layered air defence to take take on threats from China and Pakistan," Major General PK Sehgal had said.



The new Akash NG will add another layer to this new multi-layered system on which India is working. Among other features, Akash-NG will have a faster reaction time and a higher level of protection against saturation attacks.

Missiles under development:
QRSAM - 30km
Akash 1S- 25km
Akash NG - 50km
XRSAM - 200-250 km

All these missiles when operational in next decade will make it almost impossible for enemy aircrafts to enter our airspace and leave unscratched.

I like these sort of desi missile very much compared to lr Sam sort of costly missile as it delivers lot more punch per buck.. This is an excellent missile having much bigger profile and double the range. It can take on cruise missile, planes drones and even short range missiles. This can be carried with army unit for protection which is a core philosophy of cold start.

DRDO mastered the art of making Indian Govt and army C@tiya, First they develop version one if failed they develop version two, without the success of version one....

Failed ? ..lol. Over 3000 Akash SAM have been inducted by Indian army and air-force and thousands more are on order.

Forget about other SAMs deployed by India, Akash alone has wider coverage and capabilities than all Pakistani SAMs put together.
