Aisam stuns French number one

AN,

Aisam's recent performences in Europe mean a lot to a minor sporting nation like us, I'm sure he's inpired thousands of youth around the world, specially in Pakistan.

I wish him best of luck in his remaining carrier, the guy is already 27, if makes it to top 50 I'd be more than happy.

He'll be the inpiration of next generations to come.

Dear Neo,

I wholeheartedly concur. A brave showing by him will spawn a generation of young hopefuls in Pakistan, India, Srilanka and Bangladesh.

Thanks for the supportive remarks but this fellow is not new in Asia he has represented Pakistan against many Asian countries incl. on various occasions.
By your formulae, It should be than also encouraging for those Englishmen who originate from Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sirilanka etc. etc.

Somebody should start a congrats. thread for Indians as well because later today there was one Indian girl playing in the same court#18.

BTW, what is your opinion about today's performance of Tim Henman, were you there in the court?

.
You know even if he had beaten Safin (to be honest here) He would have been totally murdered by Federer.

.
But technically, I would term that death 'martyr'.
Just imagine the news ''Lahori lad playing against Roger Fedrer'' Who would care about the result.

Does any one have any information of any website or could some one post this match recording on you tube.

Wimbledon qualifier is Pride of Pakistan
By MICHELLE KAUFMAN
mkaufman@MiamiHerald.com

WIMBLEDON, England -- Tucked away in a corner of the All England Club grounds is Court 18, a cozy show court that often serves as a stage for rising stars. Playing there Thursday, against Marat Safin, was Aisam-Ul-Hag Qureshi, a 279th-ranked qualifier from Pakistan who lost but proved with his excellent serve-and-volley that he belonged.

He was the first Pakistani at Wimbledon in 32 years, and the crowd included dozens of Pakistanis, who shouted ``Shabash!''(Well done, keep going!) throughout the 6-4, 6-2, 7-6 (7-4) match.

Up until this week, he was best known as the guy who won a humanitarian award for playing doubles with Israeli Amir Hadad in 2002. He was criticized by Islamic extremists back home.

''I never thought it was going to be such a big deal,'' he said. ``I will stand with the point that you shouldn't mix politics, religion or color into sports. If I take a stand against a Jewish player, next thing I know, all the Christians and Jews and Indians take a stand against me and then I can't play. If I feel I can do well with an Indian or a Jew again, I would definitely play with them.''

Qureshi, 27, began keeping a diary in January, and in it, he wrote every day: ''I want to qualify for Wimbledon.'' He had read a book by Billie Jean King in which it said that Martina Navratilova wrote ''I will win Wimbledon'' every day in the year preceding her first victory here.

''I'm very happy that I've been able to do that, and win a round, and my next goal is to get in the top 100 this year,'' he said. ``I believe I can do this.''

Qureshi's mother, Nosheen Ihtishan, was a national champion tennis player in Pakistan for 10 years, and his maternal grandfather was the Indian No. 1 before the two countries divided.

Qureshi, who didn't pick up a racket until he was 14, says he has surprised himself with his success: ``Tennis has given me a way to make my parents proud of me, and that's a really big thing for me.''

SAFIN COMPLAINS

Safin, who plays Roger Federer today, has never been a huge fan of Wimbledon because he tends to struggle here. He also feels the food is mediocre and too pricey.

''A plate of pasta is costing around 10 pounds, which is 20 dollars, and you can have a great pasta at Cipriani in New York for that money,'' he said. ``The quality is definitely not like Cipriani. Everybody knows this restaurant. I think it's one of the best in New York. Also, in Moscow, one of the most expensive cities, we have better pasta for 20 bucks, that's for sure.''

So, is there anything Safin likes about the All England Club?

''Great showers,'' he said. ``No, really. Showers are important. If you see them, you understand what I'm talking about.''

LAST WORD

''It's like someone took off the torch from the Statue of Liberty. Like they took the arc from the Arc de Triomphe. It's my favorite court to play on, but it's so weird, the atmosphere.'' -- Maria Sharapova, 2005 champion, on Centre Court minus its partial roof, which was removed due to construction of a retractable roof.

Campbell’s Hall of Fame Tennis Championships features 32 of the top men in professional tennis competing in the only ATP pro event played on grass in North America...
Hailing from Tampa, Florida, Mardy Fish is currently ranked No. 22 in the world. Last week, Fish received the ATP’s 2006 Comeback Player of the Year Award.....
So far in 2007, Fish’s game continues to improve. In January he advanced to the quarterfinal of the Australian Open, his best performance at a grand slam event. He also reached the semifinals at Auckland and Memphis and the quarterfinal at San Jose.
Fish also holds three career doubles titles and was the silver medalist in the 2004 Olympics.
Amazing start of the tournament, top seeded player out in the first round.
Next, Aisam will be playing to 6th seeded Austrailian Nathan Healay.

Qureshi reels in Fish at Newport
July 10, 2007

NEWPORT, R.I. -- Aisam-UI-Haq Qureshi relied on his strong serve and consistent play to upset No. 1 seed Mardy Fish 6-3, 6-4 on Tuesday at the Hall of Fame Tennis Championships in another year of misfortune for the tourney's top seeds.

Qureshi, a qualifier, repeatedly left Fish struggling on service returns. The upset assured that the No. 1 seed has not won in the tournament's 31-year history on Newport's grass courts.

"I really like the courts. I like low bounces," Qureshi said. "For the top guys, the conditions were a little tough. He's not a serve-and-volleyer."

The 27-year-old Qureshi, ranked 214 coming into the event, may have been an unknown to the majority of fans cheering for Fish. But he wasn't a secret to the tournament's top seed.

"I spoke to Andy Roddick last night and told him who I was playing. He said, 'He's real good on grass,"' Fish said.

The 25-year-old Fish, who made a strong comeback last season to finish in the Top 50 after two left wrist operations in 2005, had his serve broken in the fifth game of the opening set.

In the second set, Fish appeared to be gaining momentum, breaking Qureshi in the eighth game to even it at 4-all. But Qureshi broke right back, as Fish failed to win a point in the ninth game.

Qureshi had an ace to go up 40-love before Fish hit a backhand long one point later, ending the match.

"Coming into the tournament I haven't won too many matches in a while. Right from the get-go I was a little fragile in confidence," Fish said. "Maybe I put a little too much pressure on myself. It's not many tournaments I'm a No. 1 seed."

. .
His next math was today with Austrailian Nathen Healay, it turned out a hard fought 3 set game and at the end it was again Aisam who came out as triumph.
Now Aisam is already in Quarter finals, on the way he had fought tough draws. I hope he wins the tournament. If it happens this probably be his first grand slam. This may also improve his ranking which means he will have a chance of playing at least the qualifiers of all grand slam tournaments year around. This will earn him fame and little money.

Later today, Aisam lost his double game in which he teamed with American-Indian wild card entry Amritraj.
