High drama unfolded just earlier today when reports of an unidentified person stealing an entire airplane from the Seattle-Tacoma international airport hit the internet. The plane, an Alaska Airlines Bombardier Dash 8, better known as a Q400, was stolen by an unidentified employee of an unknown airline, who took apparently took it for a joyride before crashing it in Ketron island.

The airline tweeted that it was aware of the situation of the theft, adding that the plane was not carrying any passengers.


The plane was apparently chased by two F-15s before crashing on the island (). The Pierce County Sheriff said the pilot was a lone 29-year-old suicidal male who was doing stunts and confirmed it was not a terrorist act.

An eyewitness of the incident, Ben Schaechter, shared his experience on Twitter after the plane he was on was stopped due to the theft and the passengers were forced to disembark.

So basically he missed a chance to do another 9/11. Bravo US Air Force! :D

So basically after 9/11, all the security apparatus concentrates on the hapless passengers, more so if they appear to be Muslims but otherwise, any one can enter the cockpit of a parked plane and take off.
What if he had crashed into some built up area.

There’s a lot of security is place on the hiring of people in Aviation-related jobs in the US. Trust me, there’s a lot of security, background checks, personality checks, full identity checks, of all sorts. No Pakistani, or Muslim for the matter, can ever become a commercial airline pilot of a US airline.

Are you crazy? The airplane literally HAS locks. On the cockpit and in the cabin.

I an aviation engineer. You propably are not fluent in english?

I said an aircraft has no keys like a car. When the door stands open, anyone can start the engines and take off as long he knows what to do. And the doors are usual open when parked at the gateway ect.

You can lock yourself into the cockpit, start the engines and move on. Thats a simple fact.

I´m certified for A319 /A320 / A321 and A330. What do you want to tell me?

Sure sure random guy on the internet. The certified pilot will NOT leave an airplane’s door unlocked. I don’t know what kind of fantasy you are making up. There’s a whole ton of steps post-flight that are followed, and that includes LOCKING the door.

All said and done, the question is if an aircraft starts taxing and heads out to runway unauthorised, doesn't it become the responsibility of the airport authorities to try and block it's path, how long does it takes to park a vehicle on the runway.

Actually dear, the doors are USUALLY left unlocked when parked. Usually they ONLY lock them from the inside, when they are going to fly! :)

I dont know dude, i propably talk with an expert here. I have news for you. Pilots usually leave the door open so technicians can enter after the plane landed.

Other news for you, the cockpit dors have no keys either. Its a mechanical lock. When you are in the cockpit, you can start the plane. Its that easy.

@Ishq Dewana The door itself has no keyes either. Its a mechanical door that is closed from inside. The outer door can even opened from outside and has no locks either.

When i board the aircraft, usually the crew has already left and leave us the papers. In most cases i´m there with my superior or even alone and the only other people nearby are the cleaning crews and the guys bringing the catering in.

This has been critisized by many before and i always wondered why this has not happened before. In some aircraft types i would not even need a push back, because the reverse thrust would also work in parking position.

Ok my apologies Signore. I only specialize in other engineering fields which are not the avionics. I have read vast amounts of literature but amongst it I have not found such a vector that thou hath displayed hither.
