Israeli airmen eject from F-16D during landing mishap
January 3, 2013 (by Asif Shamim) - An Israeli Air Force F-16D block 30 'Barak' believed to be from 109 Sqn slid off the runway at Ramat David airbase after a technical fault was detected during landing on January 2, 2013. Both pilot and navigator ejected safely.
According to initial reports the crew ejected just after the F-16 had touched down and was travelling at a speeds of 300 kph (180+ mph) down the runway. Fearing the jet may roll over both crewman ejected and were not injured. The F-16 came to halt after departing the runway and sustained structural damage.
Maj. Gen Amir Eshel has ordered the suspension of flights of F-16D while the investigation of the accident and fault is identified. Ongoing enquires by the IAF are underway.
A similar incident was reported at the same airbase in December 2012 when another F-16 also departed the runway after a training mission.
