Airbus signs largest ever sourcing deal in India

European aircraft major Airbus, which had sourced more than $400 million worth of components from India in the past year, has signed an agreement with Bengaluru-based Dynamatic Technologies for supply of flap-track beams for its A-330 wide-body planes, for an undisclosed sum.

Under the pact, touted as the largest manufacturing contract between Airbus and a private sector company in India, Dynamatic will assemble all the flap track beams from its Bengaluru facility. Flap track beams are used in the wings of an aircraft.

In the second phase, it will be responsible for the entire supply chain of these beams including sourcing materials, manufacturing and final assembly.

“Airbus partnership with Dynamatic signifies our commitment towards developing the aerospace supply chain in India and thereby supporting thousands of highly-skilled jobs,” Srinivasan Dwarakanath, managing director, Airbus India told reporters.

Dynamatic has manufactured flap-track beam assemblies for Airbus A320 family as a global single-source basis as a tier-2 supplier, from 2010. As part of the agreement, the Indian firm will be the single-source supplier of flap-track beams for the wide-body Airbus A330 family planes, the company said.

With this deal, Dynamatic has emerged as a tier-1 supplier to Airbus. “Through these partnerships, we can proudly claim that there’s a bit of Made in India in all our aircraft programmes,” Dwarakanath said.

RUAG Aerostructures enters India in partnership with Tata’s TAL Manufacturing Solutions​

Aerostructure components supplier and integrator Ruag Aerostructures and TAL Manufacturing Solutions Ltd., a Tata enterprise and a leading company in commercial and defence aerospace manufacturing in India, have entered into partnership for manufacturing and supply of aero structural components and sub-assemblies.

A press release from Ruag said the two companies had signed a multi-year contract with a potential value of over $ 150 million.

The new work scope allows Ruag to strengthen and optimize the global supply chain to the advantage of Airbus, it said.

As part of the contract, TAL will manufacture and supply over 550 sheet metal components, machined parts and sub-assemblies to Ruag, for Airbus’ fast moving, successful A320 programme. Going into two fuselage sections of the Airbus A320, these parts are processed from steel, aluminium and titanium and involve use of some of the most sophisticated and futuristic equipment in aerospace manufacturing.

Urs Breitmeier, CEO of Ruag Group saidt: “I am pleased about the established partnership with TAL Manufacturing Solutions Ltd. It reflects our strategy to go global in the supply chain and enables Ruag to strengthen its position as a leading first-tier supplier in Aerostructures.”

TAL Manufacturing Solutions Limited is a wholly owned subsidiary of Tata Motors Limited.

Ruag Aerostructures, located in Germany and Switzerland, develops, produces and assembles complete passenger aircraft fuselage sections, winglets, control surface components as well as sophisticated components for major customers such as Airbus, Boeing, Saab, Pilatus and Bombardier.

Bharat Forge partners Boeing for supply of titanium forgings
Boeing would use forgings for its next gen 737 and 737 Max aircraft

Boeing said it had signed a multi-year contract with Pune-based Bharat Forge to supply titanium forgings to be used in the wings of next-generation 737 and 737 MAX. The aircraft manufacturer made the announcement at the Aero India show here on Wednesday.

Under the agreement, Bharat Forge will supply pre-machined forgings from its facilities in Pune and Baramati to Boeing in the first quarter of 2016. The titanium parts will be heat-treated, shaped in a forging press, and machined by Bharat Forge before being shipped to Boeing for finish machining into components. The components will, then, be installed in 737 and 737 MAX wings at Boeing’s assembly plant at Renton in Washington. “We are pleased to welcome Bharat Forge into our supply chain as they have an impressive record of performance across many industries,” said Kent Fisher, vice-president and general manager (supplier management), Boeing Commercial Airplanes.

The contract reinforces the Boeing supply chain strategy to expand forging supply base through partnering with high performance companies like Bharat Forge, he said.

Boeing currently has forging contracts with suppliers in Asia, Europe, Russia, and North America and will continue to add new sources of forgings around the world.

“The partnership with Boeing highlights our capabilities in titanium forging and our unwavering commitment to offer high end technology and tangible value in the aerospace sector,” said Kalyani.

“We have mastered the stringent process requirements for titanium forgings and will be supplying critical forgings for wing components in one of Boeing’s high volume products. This also confirms our resolve to meet the aspirations of the ‘Make in India’ drive”, Kalyani added.

Bengaluru-based Dynamatic Technologies has handed over the first 'Made in India' aero structures for the Bell 407GX/GT to Bell Helicopter at the Aero India show, here on Thursday.

Bell Helicopter, Textron India (TIPL) and Dynamatic Technologies have been working together since 2012 to develop world-class aeronautic capacity in India as a crucial part of Bell Helicopter’s global sourcing strategy.

Following the government’s ambitious 'Make in India' announcement, Bell Helicopter and Textron Systems had signed a multi-million dollar global agreement in November 2014 with Dynamatic Technologies for supply of major airframe assemblies for Bell 407 GX and 407 GT. The agreement was for a seven-year period, with an option of extending it throughout the life of the product.

The agreement established Dynamatic as a sole source supplier of major airframe assemblies for Bell 407.

Over a three-year period, Dynamatic has successfully developed over 200 part numbers complying with the Bell Quality System, and regular export of these parts to Bell Helicopter has already started.

“The uniqueness of the Dynamatic – Bell program is that it involves the development of manufactured items from raw material itself, and brings foundational aerospace knowledge to the Indian private sector. In addition, Dynamatic has successfully indigenised the manufacture of major helicopter assemblies in collaboration with Bell Helicopter,” the company said.

Both companies remain engaged in identifying additional business opportunities in the region.

“Dynamatic in partnership with Bell Helicopter and Textron Inc, have invested considerably in training and quality systems to establish advanced engineering and manufacturing capabilities in India,” said Udayant Malhoutra, CEO & Managing Director, Dynamatic Technologies.

“In addition to our own facilities, we have supported the development of an ecosystem of highly capable and fully certified suppliers in India, which is truly in consonance with the National ‘Make in India’ program,” he added.

Bell Helicopter is committed to the 'Make in India' program, and the progress Dynamatic has made as the sole-source provider of Bell 407GX and 407GT major airframe assemblies is a significant step towards this objective, said Van Wilson, Bell Helicopter’s Program Director, Light Commercial Aircraft.
