C-295 Transport Aircraft

April 17, 2015:
The sole Airbus-Tata bid to replace 56 of the Indian Air Force's HS748 Avro medium transports with Indian-built C295 twin turboprop aircraft is likely to be pushed through by the Defence Ministry shortly, paving the way for what the government hopes will be a cornerstone for the 'Make in India' campaign. The complex programme involves the local manufacture of 40 aircraft following the procurement of 16 in flyaway condition from the airframe OEM. PM Narendra Modi's recent visit to the Airbus facilities in Toulouse, France is being seen as a major leg-up for the company in terms of its 'Make in India' thrust, with the proposed Indian C295 production line being pitched as a global aircraft hub, the first of its kind in India. The MoD has also shown willingness to look beyond 'single vendor' issues and press on with the needs of the forces. As with the AWACS programme, where the MoD cleared the single Airbus bid with the A330 widebody jet, all indications are that the Airbus-Tata bid will similarly be pushed through after certain clarifications are verified. The programme will be one of the largest in India.

This plane have a maritime surveillance variant too, doesn't it?

. . .
Make sure we can some how design and build them in India. India needs its own brands.
No need to go for expensive western products.
Frankly it is not possible... LCA was forecast-ed with arount 600 crore... but the cost exceeds 50,000 crores with still the fighter not entered service!

Armed forces need the Project Managers!

The Entire LCA program costed less than 1 billion $ and that included building infrastructures like wind tunnel testing, design and analysis, FMA, certification, test jigs, prototype building etc. It is quite literally the cheapest aircraft program in the world.

Considering the fact that we have already built and delivered indigenous platforms from kiran to marut to LCA to Saras, correct your ignorance to understand our capabilities.

Everybody needs Project Managers, not only Armed Forces. EVERY project needs one and they always have one.

C-295
A330 MRTT (should be signed shortly)

Buddy... what is the result? Is it achieved on time? LCA did not get Full operation clearance till now!

I would say the LCA's project manager is the worst project manager in the world!

Such an ignorant comment. Considering the base India started with (i.e. nil) the LCA project is nothing short of a huge SUCCESS. The Rafale, F-22 and EFT all took longer to enter service that too being built by industrialised nations and by established aviation giants. India has had to build an entire ecosystem around this project and this will allow it to build on it for much greater success with future projects.

The whole "LCA is a failure" gets very old very fast.

LCA is already Inducted into the Air Force. Its IOC is already done. FOC will happen in the next few months and it will be the most stringent FOC any modern aircraft has gone through. Even the F-35 is not cleared to fire its gun, but is still flying with the US AF.

You know nothing of Project management so its foolish to comment on things you barely comprehend.

In India, there is only one organization capable enough to take up the task of designing and Manufacturing. It goes by the name HAL. The Idea of this govt. is to create multiple Indian vendors for our Armed Forces to shop its equipment's from down the line!! Products being built under "Make in India" Initiative is not a mere license production.

No Aircraft in modern time had to undergo as much testings as what is being done on LCA. The certification process here in India is a total Pain!! Good for the public , but really a Pain for the OEM.

You don't know things, it would appear.

LCA's project manager was congress gov't.

Yes I would agree with you.

See how tejas has been doing since a better project manager appeared on the scene. Get the drift ?

You're preaching to the converted. :enjoy:

Any News about Turbo Jet Variant???

That will be really a cracker.

All in all TATA should not end up doing "Screw Driver" Tech in Turbo Prop version.

Lets see in what % the Technology is transferred to Local Vendors in India.

This is good then having nothing. Atleast a private player is entering in assembling a plane having size of C-295.
