Aid agencies condemn Pakistan's plans to export wheat - Telegraph

this is the height of callousness.

first all those involved, even those suggesting or expressing approval, in this should have all their assets (moveable and immovable) confiscated. he confiscation to include the assests all their family members (children, parents, siblings, inlaws etc.).

next they should be guillotined and displayed for all and sundry to see as a example.

only such drastic measures might deter this barbaric lot.

Well, this is a global economy, and in order for Pakistan to thrive, wheat needs to be exported.

The only question is whether there is any shortages.

shortage is huge,
our leaders sucks...simple as that

If they were worried about their peoples, they would have never sold food items in this disastrous situation.... and what else? - they would rather take more loans and hike prices of food and energy items more n more

Our mosque was thinking of donating to the flood relief since PIA would ship them for free but after they began asking for clothes with the tags still on them, some people got suspicious that the GOP just wanted new clothes to sell on the black market.

What a decision..first export wheat and then when there is a shortage buy it from international market at very high price thus inflating the cost..
Why cant our politicians think straight..

You are kidding zaki.. Our stores are full of wheat and govt. do not have resources to mange more wheat and the only solution remained is to export it... Do you know that even the wheat that was purchased last year is still in store rooms or even in open air... No one there to care for that stored wheat... It's just that govt. or some influencing people are not allowing that wheat to come to the market ,may be, otherwise there is no shortage at all...

See this May 2010 news item:

ISLAMABAD: Former prime minister Shaukat Aziz took a wrong decision by exporting wheat on false assumption of a bumper crop in 2007 and that caused a loss of Rs25.8 billion to the national exchequer, said a top official on Wednesday.

Secretary Ministry of Food and Agriculture, Zia-ur-Rehman, told the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) that in 2007 a lobby created an impression that there was going to be a bumper crop of wheat and despite opposition by the then secretary food, Ismail Qureshi, Shaukat Aziz took the wrong decision. “It not only created shortage in the domestic market but also pushed up wheat prices,” said Zia-ur-Rehman. The office of the Auditor-General of Pakistan (AGP) disclosed that due to illplanning in February 2007 the federal government exported 300,000 tons of wheat at $185 per ton. “Just after few months, the government had to import 1.5 million tons of wheat at $400 per ton,” it added.

well given that 60 % of your work force is associated with agriculture, allowing export of food will directly benefit them.

what are you guys proposing? that we people in the cities should get flour for cheap while those doing all the effort on their fields should not be allowed to get maximum benefits?
government should maintain some buffer stock to take care of any possible price shocks and thats it.

Exactly , thats a nice suggestion , but you know the political stooges will eventually beat this issue to death just to have some kind of political stunts before actually proposing such a solution .. !!!

.
There should be no export until the needs of our own population has been met... The hell with maximum profits... Back in 2007 this is exactly what happened that although we had good crops we exported so much that there was shortage of wheat for a while in the country...

After the needs of the local population has been met then its ok to export and earn profits...

Politicians need to be straight to thin straight!

You can sell the wheat only if the profit is high and goes to the hands of GoV, not Zardari or any other __________.
Also if there isint any shortage within the country!

In that case we should push for that wheat to come out in the market... It could be that they are hoarding to keep the prices up...

Plese provide the valid source for such an information. Consider this analysis by Kyser Bangali about how the Musharff's Gov dodged orinary people just to export wheat later on ended up importing alot of wheat from India on expensive rates ... !!!

Do you wanna say that 60% of pakistanis gonna export wheat and the money from wheat export will come into the pockets of 60% of these pakistanis.

I don't think so if it's like that plz explain???????????

In India govt. of private companies purchases wheat from farmers at Mandi (Wholesale market) and then its their wheat they can do it anything with it.

The private companies earn huge amount by selling the wheat to domestic of international firms.

So no big money goes into the pockets of farmer.

Now, what about pakistan's case??????????
